Best soccer player at his peak?

Post#1 » by Gregoire » Tue Feb 16, 2021 12:50 pm

Hi, guys!
I want to ask simple question: who was best ever player at their best? Who impacted the game most actually and who likely would impact the most in most teams and scenarios ever?
I assume 1 season peak, but its up to you, maybe 2 seasons, maybe 1 game (if you thing it wasnt fluke). I just thing 1 season is optimal for sample size purposes...
Give, please, the answer and maybe your top-5 in order.
Obvious candidates: Messi, Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Fenomeno...
Maybe some other names: Ronaldinho, Zico, Platini, Zidane, Di Stefano, Puskas, Muller, Cristiano,

Not the best but Ronaldinho certainly was the most fun to watch in his prime.

If I was given a random squad and had to win one match by whatever means possible, I'd choose Messi.

The best peak I've ever witnessed from a player was that one year of Ronaldo on Barcelona.

My favourite peak to have watched, was probably Luis Figo's last season on Barcelona and first two on Real Madrid.

Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Kaka could reach incredible heights over a single game, but it's still Messi.

From someone who's not an all-time great, David De Gea's single-season peak was one of the best I've seen and very very underrated IMO.

This is a tough one. I feel if we ignore trophies, longevity and just look at peak, top form - than nobody beats Ronaldo 9 in my opinion. Dude could do everything and was impossible to stop. Only injuries killed him.
Now if we look at favorites mine is Michael Laudrup by far. His vision, dribbling and passing was unmatched. Too bad he did not have that killer instinct and a bit of selfishness and just looked to be genuinely happy playing soccer and being a second or third option on the teams he used to play.

1. Ronaldo - short peak because of injuries but he was magical dribbler like Ronaldinho, powerful, direct like Messi, could take on a whole defence on his own.

2. Pele was the original Messi/Ronaldo

3. Ronaldinho - shorter peak but could have easily been best ever if he was as disciplined, hungry as Messi.

4. Messi

5. Maradona

Funny enough I think best ever is Messi followed because of his amazing peak was decade long,Maradona nr.2 best ever because he was also brilliant from early 80s to 1994.
