Re: Movie Thread -- Happy Stuff (Non-Wizards)
Thanks, Doc --
I'm watching a show on Amazon that I think might be the best thing I've ever seen on TV. It's called "The Bureau." It's about spies, double agents, adventure, and the like -- with much of the action (though not all) taking place in Syria, Iraq & Iran. I can't believe how well it's plotted, directed, acted & shot; the level of tension is amazing -- & seems to increase constantly!
The show is French; it's centered on their equivalent of the CIA or England's MI5. The CIA, Mossad, etc. also figure in. If subtitles bother you that might be a problem. But, honestly, it's amazing. Give it a try!
The Bureau is on Amazon Prime, but you do need a Sundance channel subscription for a few bucks a month in order to watch it. There are 5 seasons. My wife & I are so hooked that we watch on average 2 episodes a night.
Don't miss it.

Re: Movie Thread -- Happy Stuff (Non-Wizards)
I had a really rough time sitting through that first episode.
Found the concept funny for about 5 minutes, but then it just got really tiresome.
Are they sticking with this bizzaro Marvel meets Bewitched format or is this a means to an end?
I turned off episode 2 within a couple of minutes, couldn't take it anymore.

It ends after the 2nd episode.

Part of a slow build.

Re: Movie Thread -- Happy Stuff (Non-Wizards)
Shows I've watched recently:
Yellowstone - Excellent show. Superb writing, acting and cinematography. Produced by Kevin Costner. It's like Sopranos, only on a ranch in Montana. Just a first rate show, one of the best I've seen in years. On Hulu, I think. I torrented it.
Colony - A competent, fast-paced, apocalyptic thriller. Basically it's a modern day rendition of that old 80's show "V". It's fairly formulaic, but still pretty entertaining. It's not an all time great or anything, but it'll help the pandemic evenings go by. Netflix
Wayne - A quirky dark comedy. Sort of like the American version of End of the F**king World, only better. A real gem. I hope there's a Season 2. Amazon Prime
The Expanse - One of the best hard science fiction shows I've ever seen. It's about as good as the Battlestar Galactica reboot, only it doesn't totally fall apart after the 2nd season. The pacing is a bit slow at times, but the world-building is superb. Amazon Prime
Last Kingdom - A pretty good historical fiction show set in Britain during the reign of Alfred the Great. It starts of a little slow, but the lead character is very good and the show gets better and better. Netflix
The 100 - A CW teen-angsty post apocalypse action adventure show. It won't be winning any awards for writing and has plenty of contrived, illogical plot twists just to further the story. But the production quality is pretty impressive and it's entertaining enough as background noise in my home gym while I lift. And there's 7 seasons of it so it's hours and hours of entertainment. It has an aesthetic similar to Vampire Diaries in that it's both childish and kind of compelling at the same time - but then you're kind of ashamed of yourself for enjoying it. Netflix

A few great shows from recent months:
The Bureau (French, about secret agents, double agents, rogue agents). This is one of the best things I've ever seen on the small screen. 5 seasons 50 episodes.
Queen's Gambit -- 1 season. About a young girl in an orphanage who is very very good at chess. No violence, no super-heroes. It's totally terrific even for someone who knows nothing about chess.
Midnight Diner -- about a little eating place in Tokyo that's only open from midnight to 7am. Each episode its own story. Quiet, human, full of interest. No explosions....

Saw Queens Gambit too. It wasn't bad, but it was a little slow. I feel like it had 6 episodes of story to tell, but they dragged on for 10.
I'll check out the Bureau. Sounds good.

Watched the Series of Unfortunate Events and Queens Gambit recently. Both felt really really slow, but enjoyed both. Queens Gambit really felt like it peaked about halfway through the season then ran out of story to tell.

Just watched the miniseries Cernobyl which is available on Netflix. Very good but obviously dark and not for kids.
The Russians f'd up in so many ways, but there were a few who were willing to point out the failures which put themselves at risk.

I watched that with my kids (ages 14, 16 and 18 at the time) and they all LOVED it. They were riveted.
It's a very good show.

Re: Movie Thread -- Happy Stuff (Non-Wizards)
It's a slow build for sure but each episode is a spin off of a tv sitcom era so they get to 50,60,70,80-90,00, and 2010s in the first 6 episodes and the last two they are dropping the aitcome thing and finishing the story I believe. But the story picks up in episode 3 i suggest waiting two more weeks and binging the whole thing in one or two sittings and it will be much better as like an extra long movie.

-It Happened One Night (alright)
-Eighth Grade (awesome)
-Chinatown (seen it before, and a personal favorite)

Re: Movie Thread -- Happy Stuff (Non-Wizards)
Some great suggestions! I'll chime in, some binge-worthy shows I've watched recently, some of which are still ongoing....
Yellowstone - Kevin Costner is the J.R. Ewing of this modern day ranch drama, very dark and violent.
The Ranch - if you liked The 70s Show this is for you. Basically a slapstick comedy version of Yellowstone.
Ozark - another dark and violent drama, with Jason Bateman as the head of this family. In the general Sopranos or Breaking Bad mold, very good with some high level suspense & tension.
Stranger Things - a bizarre horror show that evokes Spielberg (E.T, The Goonies, Poltergeist) at times as its about a group of kids & set in the 80s.
If you're into Sci-Fi there's The Mandalorian if you're a Star Wars fan, and the Star Trek reboots Discovery and Picard. Each of these are top of the line with special effects and almost like watching a movie. The Mandalorian is pretty spectacular at times, and set basically right after Return of the Jedi. Discovery is set just prior to the original Star Trek series, although that gets a bit twisted, and Picard is post Next Generation. Although it helps if you're already a fan, these all can be watched independently too as they pretty much stand on their own if you're new to these franchises, they could be used as an intro to them. I also have heard good things about The Expanse which I haven't seen yet.. that's one I'll have to check out next!
Cobra Kai - if you liked the original Karate Kid movie back in the day, this is must watch! Gets a bit cheesy, but has some hilarious moments throughout. Fun show to binge!
The Curse of Oak Island - a real time show documenting the search for a treasure in Nova Scotia, pretty intriguing story. Long running show on now in season 8 I think. I recommend going back and watching from the beginning (it's worth it), but you could jump into it now as they do fill in the backstory occasionally.

Re: Movie Thread -- Happy Stuff (Non-Wizards)
Great list. Since you go back pretty far, let me continue in that vein....
No Hitchcock & no Westerns.... Be easy to list 25 films of those 2 kinds that no one should miss.
Start with H's Rear Window & Vertigo. The Man Who Knew Too Much; Strangers On A Train. Many many more....
Westerns: John Ford's The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance may be the best movie ever made. My Darling Clementine, Fort Apache, & a whole bunch more by him.
Howard Hawks: Red River. Rio Bravo & Eldorado are similar, one to the other -- made one after the other, both absolutely great). My favorite, however, is Only Angels Have Wings (not a Western -- about pilots). Not to mention his great great comedies.
Here's one I don't think you'd be likely to run into on your own: The Tarnished Angels (1957, directed by Douglas Sirk).
Watch this film, & you'll start laughing about 2 minutes in & won't stop the rest of the way through: The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, made in 1944 by the great Preston Sturges (google him & watch all his movies).
