Hatch and Merryweather being "built up" as starters is great. Those are the 2 guys I was hoping to get a reach chance in the rotation. That's based on my guess that they have higher ceilings than Thornton, Zeuch, Chatwood, and obviously Wags. I also thing the left-handedness of our rotation as currently constituted, as much as anything, pushes Kay to the pen.

Hatch I understand, but I still don't understand Merryweather. The guy has barely pitched in three years, and he's 29 years old - how many innings do they think they can get out of him as a starter? If ever there were a guy for a flame-thrower relief role, it's Merryweather. I don't doubt the stuff, but at this stage of his career he looks tailor-made for the bullpen. He reminds me a bit of Morrow, actually, and Morrow's had a longer-than-expected career out of the pen.

Yeah, having Merryweather come out of the pen in a prime Dellin Betances type role seems like a no-brainer to me. Dude can come in, throw heat for multiple innings if he needs to and take the game closer to the 9th inning. And considering that our rotation is filled with guys who'll likely throw 5-6 innings max a start, we could definitely use a quality arm like Merryweather in a multi-inning role.

I think Hatch is going to have one of those ‘where the F did that guy come from’ type careers.

Something changed after the Jays acquired him and he started missing bats and gaining control. And sometimes the success of certain pitchers is tough for scouts to see ahead of time. Some guys just miss bats without explanation.

I've thought Hatch might be a find right from his second or third start at New Hampshire. It seems as if the Jays are going to need one of their young pitchers who have had starter experience on their way up to graduate to the rotation - force their way in and if Roarke in particular is as ineffective as he often was last summer, push him right off the roster.

Wow, so we couldn't even pay Walker 3 years/23 million?

When are we going to spend money on pitching then if we can't spend that for a good 3rd starter.

The reason Walker's available for that is that he's a long way from a proven 3rd starter. His ERA last season was really lucky: he gave up much more hard contact that a pitcher can normally get away with, so it's fairly likely that he'll regress back to the back-end starter his numbers suggest he ought to be.

All else equal, would I rather have Walker than Matz, though? Yeah.

4.30-5.00 sounds about right. His xERA for 2020, which is based on xwOBA, was 4.87. He got really lucky, which can happen in a small sample.

I kinda thought part of why his ERA hadn't been better was the Mariners have sucked forever.
