i think there’s a decent chance that teams dare their disgruntled star qbs to blink, but you can’t really use the past as a measuring stick. watson and russ trades would be a paradigm shift for the league, and it would happen because elite quarterbacks are more willing to exert their power/leverage today than they ever did before

Add the huge money the Bears would have to pay for a 32 year old quarterback (33 after next season begins), the Bears are not going to make this work as far as being set up with a true winning future.

I like Carr but not that much. I'm not interested in giving up 2 1st's for Carr. I'd rather just sign Winston and/or take a chance on a QB that falls to us.
Flailing around to take a short cut to ameliorate past mistakes is to keep digging the hole you're in. Pace is impatient and under pressure, but we don't have to feed into that. It's his problem. McCaskey is a bonehead for putting Pace in this position, and the Bears. The Bears should stop digging the hole they are in while looking for a quick fix.

russell wilson will almost certainly be a better qb over the next five years than anyone the bears could acquire over that same window
get the qb and figure the rest out later

He carries cap hits of $32 million next season, $37 million in 2022 and $39 million in the final year of his deal. You've got no picks and no money to build around him. By the time you ever do, he's too old as a guy that thrives on mobility. Best you're looking at is selling everything out for a year or 2 of contention if so fortunate.

We just witnessed Tom Brady changing a bum team to Super Bowl winner. Yes, I’m trading three firsts for Wilson without thinking twice. We just have to do a lot of work scouting to get gems in the later rounds.

Tom Brady is a pocket passer. He might be able to play until 50 (I keed). That Tampa team was loaded too.

that was 2009, quite awhile back. and he is not in the same category as russell or DW. Cutler was average overall. Russ is a superbowl champion with 8 pro-bowls and a career QBR of 101. DW just posted a QBR of 112 over last year. Cutler had 25TD and 18INT with a QBR of 86 prior to being traded. His career average QBR is 85.
No great quarterback has been traded in last 10-20 years. Hoping one does here is going against history. Furthermore, bears do not seem to be a desired location. The leadership is under heavy scrutiny, and ownership is unwilling to make a change.

Tampa's defense was elite, brady didnt carry them to a win.To give Reed/Mahomes that much difficulty to move the ball speaks volumes. Tampa shut down the MJ of football of this era

Wrong, the team that trades for him isn't on the hook for his bonus.
The Bears are SB contenders with him.

He'd count for $19M in 2021, $19M+$5M in 2022 and $22M+$5M in 2023.
If you're not rooting for the Bears to get a HOF QB, what the hell WOULD you root for?

the salary cap is a made-up construct bro
the rams and saints have proven you can stay competitive for several years even if you're cap constrained + lack first-round picks, and they've gone it with an iffy goff and brees in the twilight of his career. might as well try to win now

I mean, when Cutler was trade he was a hot player. He just got off throwing for 4500 yards as well + he was 25. He wasn't valued as much as Watson but he was highly thought of.
Stafford is in their category and he just got dealt.
Russ wants to come here because he believes he'll be able to air it out here. Nagy and Pace without a doubt would Let Russ Cook if he came here. This whole rift is because Pete Carroll wants to run the ball and Russ wants to air it out. We're down to let him air it out.

Get Russ now, air it the **** out and win 10-14 games a year with Russ for the next 5+ years. Who gives a **** about picks when you've got a franchise QB who's gone 98-45-1, hasn't missed a game in his career, won a Super Bowl, made it to another, thrown for 267 TDs to 81 INTs and knows when to tuck and run it. Rodgers STILL kills us every year with his feet and he's almost 40 and we never get a clean hit off on him because he's so smart.

This is an interesting thought. Basically having the QB be a pseudo GM and bring in players looking to win on value deals has long been a thing in the NBA but seems to be a newer idea in the NFL.
THE APPEAL OF THE BEARS FOR WILSON IS THAT CHICAGO WOULD BE A HUGE MEDIA MARKET FOR HIS WIFE, CIARA, AND THE BEARS HAVE A PLAYOFF-READY DEFENSE.
“HE’D WANT TO GO TO A PLACE LIKE (CHICAGO) FIGURING HE COULD GET A COUPLE PLAYERS TO COME WITH HIM AND THEN DO WHAT TOM BRADY DID IN TAMPA — WIN A SUPER BOWL,” THE SOURCE SAID.

Ah yeah, that's right. But then again, the Seahawks would be on the cap hook for the 39 million if they trade him. That's going to raise the cost to the team trading for him significantly in terms of assets required to make the Seahawks suck that up. He may want to be traded, but the Seahwks probaby would not want. Unless a team went nuts on an offer.
What would be the cost to both sides if the Seahawks were to trade Russell Wilson and his contract?
These numbers do not make for a warm and fuzzy reading for the Seahawks. Russell Wilson has three years remaining on his contract with $13 million per year in prorated bonus money. All of that would accelerate onto the Seahawks’ 2021 salary cap in the event of a trade Therefore, the Seahawks would be left with $39 million in dead money following a trade. An increase of $7 million in cap number and not having Wilson under contract makes this seem like an unlikely option.
However, if the Seahawks receive an offer they are willing to take, Russell Wilson’s contract would be extremely favorable to his new team. Wilson would leave behind $39 million in salary cap over the next three years. Therefore, his new team would have just $69 million in remaining money.
That would spread nicely across the next three seasons. In 2021, Wilson would have a cap number of just $19 million. Then in 2022 and 2023, that would rise to just $24 million and $26 million, respectively. Those numbers make a trade for Wilson a desirable proposition. Thus, we could see teams willing to trade away several assets to acquire the talented quarterback.[/i][/b]

Yes
And +1000
I just worry about our line with Russ
In order to maximize his career we’d want to spend everything else on that
But that’s like worrying about insurance when someone is gonna trade you a Porsche, when you currently got a ‘89 geo metro

Feel a lot like Lebron AD and Harden trades.
I don’t like it at all.
I do understand Watson wanting out. HOU is running a clown show down there.
Can’t believe Russ is willing to walk out on Carrol. May be a Seattle thing.

I'd never follow SportsMockery. Many of their sources are made up.

that is one of the most bizarre comments i've heard on this site
every team spends approximately the same amount of money on their roster each year. that ain't made up. multi-billionaire jerry jones doesn't have a lot of success in dallas primarily because he is restrained by the salary cap. if he wasn't, you can bet your ass that, for example, the dak prescott negotiations wouldn't STILL be dragging on
you can turn around a terrible nfl team very quickly BECAUSE THERE'S A HARD CAP! contending teams regularly collapse quickly BECAUSE THERE'S A HARD CAP! it's why there is so much parity in the league. it's the business model

Re: Bears 2019/20; George McCaskey is on the clock
the saints have turned their salary cap situation into a punchline. they're always like $40 million over the cap at the beginning of the offseason and they manage to make stuff work by restructuring contracts and being judicious about who they retrain
obviously the cap is a real team-building constraint, but there's some wiggle room to operate within those constraints. and you can use a little smoke and mirrors to cover up holes when you've got a top-tier talent at what is by far the most important position in the sport
