(#1 doesn't mean perfect. It means no one else is better.)

I just want to say thank you for making this topic, OP. Cool idea for a poll. I'd vote, but I'm not sure I have enough knowledge to. Glad Rudy got voted #1. Dude deserves it.

It's not the same thing and you know it. There's nothing to interpret here, what you see is fact in basketball. I remember a few seasons ago Chris Paul danced on Gobert and then blew by him for a layup. His DPOY case ended there for me. Every season I see him have a defensive play where he gets destroyed. You can't be considered the best defender if you make mistakes or get beat.

Every single player in the history of the nba had made a mistake and has gotten beaten. You're basically saying there can never be a DPOY period.

Draymond needs to be in this discussion. The Warriors are now up to the 4th ranked defense in the NBA. This after being absolutely awful to start the season without him. He's been phenomenal on defense this year, even if his stocks/rebounds aren't as high as they usually are.

If you are watching the PHI-DAL game, tell me how Ben Simmons isn't the DPOY.

I have seen way too many topics about top clutch players, top scorers, top passers and more. Whereas I have never seen a topic to settle the top 10 defensive player like this.

Thank you for the positive reinforcement.

So Simmons came second in the first poll for best DPOY and is now coming second in this poll for 2nd best DPOY. Yeah that makes sense....

Here's the thing, not all of the voters for Gobert consider Simmons as the 2nd best.

It's just that simple.

I nominate Jimmy Butler.

He is the best wing defender I have seen over the last few years.

The Warriors have a better defensive rating with Draymond on the bench this year...which isn't to say that they are actually better without him, but that 4th place defensive is being driven by a lot more than Dray.

A few all stars, all nba, and superstars don’t want to see Ben next to them at all lol. He is literal Kryptonite in that he can take away there almost superhuman capabilities and make them seem like a normal nba player? Doncic literally can’t do anything scoring wise against Ben it’s such a nightmare matchup for him. Takes away his greatest strengths and exposes his weak points.

When you can guard Lillard as well as anyone then Lock Doncic up your versatile value goes through the roof.

Most valuable would probably Giannis/Davis for me.
Team defense and individual defense they are both right at the top. Though PG prison guard Ben is a nightmare for marquee SF/PF types.

Simmons will never in his life have the defensive impact davis had in last years playoffs. Its not really close either.

So there can be no DPOY in your universe? Because there is no defender out there playing shutouts every game.

Gobert was the best isolation defender last season. And the season before combined. Not the best Centre in isolation, the best player. https://www.forbes.com/sites/bendowsett/2020/06/29/rudy-goberts-improved-perimeter-defense-is-an-major-tool-for-the-utah-jazz/?sh=15812af975c5
It even has videos to help you. He allowed .688 points per possession on isolations on over 160 possessions, with many of them coming on perimeter switches.

And if Gobert can’t be the best defender because he sometimes got beaten in highlight videos, then nobody can be because everyone else in the entire league performed worse.

Yeah, makes perfect sense, neutral fans vote other guys in both threads, Philly fans swarming realgm this season vote their bois Embiid and Simmons everywhere, be it top 1 or top 2 defender, mvp or best scorer/big etc. At least Raps fans are not everywhere this year...

Voted Draymond, he’s on the next level compared to these other guys when it comes to defensive bbiq, he’s not only a great defender but is the best vocal leader on defense. Can’t put him over Gobert because Gobert’s physical profile just makes him an absurdly good defender, but he’s my number two for sure.

He’s playing against the starters, defending the best offensive players on the other teams, so of course his defensive +/- suffers.
