It's not the same thing and you know it. There's nothing to interpret here, what you see is fact in basketball. I remember a few seasons ago Chris Paul danced on Gobert and then blew by him for a layup. His DPOY case ended there for me. Every season I see him have a defensive play where he gets destroyed. You can't be considered the best defender if you make mistakes or get beat.

"Rudy Gobert Anchors one of the best defensive teams\best team to date this season and is a huge reason why their scheme works and how they can be such a good defensive team without multiple great defenders in the team"

"yeah but years ago one of the greatest point guards beat him on the perimeter, Facts dont care about your feelings 8-) "

PS go ahead nominate a player who deserves to be included in the next poll

So Simmons came second in the first poll for best DPOY and is now coming second in this poll for 2nd best DPOY. Yeah that makes sense....

The people who voted for Gobert get to vote again this time. There is a chance they just like names that begin with the letter ‘G’.

But seriously, the selection criteria of people who voted Gobert do not have to default to Simmons. It could be that the majority prioritise paint defense, and they will settle on a number of frontcourt options before their votes spill over to Simmons

He’s the only guy I’ve seen get beat on the parameter.

This Ben Simmons hype train is really weird. Giannis, Embiid, Davis & Bam are all better than him defensively.

As a guard, Simmons versatility is great but he’s not stopping any team from doing what they wanna do.

All of the guys I listed are great as rim protectors, post defenders, help defenders & are good enough 1 on 1 that you wouldn’t wanna challenge them out there.

2 hour warning.

Simmons is currently leading over Giannis by only one vote.

This is going to be a real nailbiter!

James Harden, the best defense is a good offense!

I did some quick math just to see how ridiculous this comment is. Extrapolating from Utahs pace and minutes played, Gobert would have played about 5300 defensive possessions last year. But you saw a single one where he got destroyed....

1. Davis
2. Giannis
3. Gobert
4. Draymond
5. Simmons
6. Bam

That would be my list based overall rather than exclusively this season.

The Warriors have a better defensive rating with Draymond on the bench this year...which isn't to say that they are actually better without him, but that 4th place defensive is being driven by a lot more than Dray.

He’s playing against the starters, defending the best offensive players on the other teams, so of course his defensive +/- suffers.

You're not wrong about him playing against other starters, but the same is true for every starter. The Pacers, for example, are significantly better with Myles Turner on the floor (106.7) than the Warriors are with Draymond on the floor (109.2). Should Draymond really get more credit for being on the 4th ranked defense than Turner who's on the team with the 10th ranked defense?

Wasn't Giannis running from Jimmy Butler in the playoffs? He has the physical profile, but his actual instincts and mind for the defensive floor aren't on Ben's level. I'd say Giannis is a better help side defender and rim protector than Ben (because he's essentially a center anyways). But Ben nearly doubles his steal rate, has led the league in steals and has a laundry list now of swallowing up the most elite wing players and holding them to paltry percentages. I'd take Ben because I value his man defending prowess.

Giannis got destroyed defensively against Miami and committed one of the alltime dumb fouls on Jimmy at the end of the game to lose the game on free throws

Embiids defense got exposed against us last playoffs without Ben Simmons too. We were exposing his porous pick and roll coverage and weak perimeter defense too. It was so easy carving them up without Ben

Its wild how ppl still run with this "Rudy cant defend perimeter" when hes far better than Embiid in perimeter coverage, pick and roll defense and switching

I've seen Gobert get blown by and beat on the parameter. He isn't the perfect defender, so having him at #1 is disingenuous. He's been beat before. He's better than average, but not the best. You can't be the best and have highlights of you getting beat on the defensive side.

You can use this argument for any top defensive player my dude, lol. I'm sure Giannis and Embiid both have highlights of them being destroyed on defense also over the years.

Stop using this dumb argument to mask your hate for Gobert, lol.

Literally everybody has had highlights put on them on defense, wtf?

Gobert eviscerated Giannis with a poster the last game they played. I guess GA's DPOY should be revoked??? Dude is trash on defense if he got boomed on by Rudy /s

For real though. Great defenders will be put in highlights at times simply because they put themselves in the position in the first place. Give me the guy who tries to block the dunk at all costs anyday as opposed to the dude who side steps and let's them go by uncontested

Btw, it's "perimeter"

Couldn't have said it better. As a teenager I must've watched Patrick Ewing get put on a hundred posters, but it's because he always put himself in the middle of someone trying to get to the rim.

It's absolutely insane to me that Simmons is this close to Giannis. Overall impact numbers favor Giannis in a pretty substantial way. This just feels like voter fatigue after the league being beat over the head with Giannis over the last two years.

3Year RAPM Giannis ranks 1st, Simmons ranks 192nd
DPS Giannis ranks 2nd, Simmons ranks 3rd
D-Lebron Giannis ranks 13th, Simmons ranks 38th
Simmons has not outranked Giannis in DRAPTOR over the last three and a half seasons.
The Philly defense is slightly worse with Ben on the court in limited minutes in PP100
Simmons has a small advantage over Giannis this season in DBPM but has been crushed by Giannis in each of the last two

There's this mound of statistical evidence to the contrary here and people are just going to say, "Ben because he locks down?" Oof.
