What about Nicolas Claxton? Would the Nets trade him? He is just returning from injury, and I can't imagine his value would be high, but his potential is there.

I really wanted him in the 2019 draft. Went like 2 or 3 picks before us in the 2nd round. I don't see Nets moving him considering their depth but he's the type of young big we should be targeting.

What if they end up with a buyout candidate like Drummond? What if we could work a 3-way with Cleveland where they get Javale Mcgee as part of the trade? Just looking for ways as I am with you that he would be a great target.

Should we try to get Lonzo?
Ok I know this could be a can of worms but here me out....
Lonzo seems to be having a pretty good season. He has fixed the thing that worried me the most, his free throw percentage. His 3pt percentage is also looking respectable.
Like LaMelo he came into the league slotted as a pg but his height gives him a lot of positional versatility. His ast/turnover ratio is good. His defense is good.
Rozier is 26. Graham is 26. LaMelo is 19. Monk is 23. Lonzo is 23.
Having Lonzo on the team might give LaMelo that backyard feeling every night.
Any time you are dealing with contracts their could be some hurt feelings. Lonzo is a restricted free agent soon and I usually hate trading for these guys because you get backed into a corner of paying a big contract or losing the value you traded for them. His next contract could end up being an overpay or a bargain. It could help or hurt in terms of resigning LaMelo.
Thoughts?

I asked the question yesterday, would anybody trade Rozier for Lonzo and Jaxson Hayes.
Rozier turns 27 in March, Lonzo is 23
Lonzo has moved off the ball this year like Terry did last year, and is having similar results as Terry had last year. Lonzo is shooting 40% from deep, Terry shot 40% last year. Lonzo has a 57% TS while Terry posted a 55% TS last year. Keep in mind Lonzo is 23, while Terry turned 26 last year in season. Terry has taken another step and gotten better this year, but if he can improve in his age 27 season, surely Lonzo can also continue to improve in his age 24 season. By the time Lonzo is 26/27 he could very well be a good bit better than Terry is. Lonzo has also improved to over 75% from the FT line. Lonzo is also 6'6" compared to Terry at 6'1" giving us more height at that SG spot.
Lonzo is a better passer, which is a main stay in the Borrego system. The passing abilities of LaMelo, Lonzo, and Hayward together would be top notch.
Though he would primarily play shooting/combo guard as a secondary ball handler, he could also run the offense for short periods while LaMelo was on the bench. He is better than Terry here.
Though I like the tough defense Terry plays, Lonzo is also good on the defensive end and brings more height.
Terry has one more year on his contract, if he continues this play he is going to get expensive. If he falls off, we cashed in at tge right time. We can probably re-sign Lonzo for Terry money for 4/5 years into his prime.
Lonzo at age 23 allows for himself, LaMelo, Monk, PJ, Miles to grow into their primes together. Rozier will be in his 30's by the time these guys hit their primes, and as a smallish sized guard we can already see what is happening to Kemba in his 30's
Having said all of that, remember we would also get a 20 year old athletic center in Hayes who could become the rim running, rebounding, rim protecting center we need to pair with LaMelo.

Zero interest in trading Rozier for LaMelo. Rozier is a much better fit as a shooter and you are forced to pay Lonzo this summer.

I completely agree as of now. Yes we would have to pay Lonzo, but you are probably looking at money about what Rozier currently makes, and when speaking of paying, remember we have to pay Terry next offseason, and that contract is going up up up, and we will be paying him as a smallish guard into his 30's.
I love Rozier and doubt very seriously we trade him, but just trying to have discussion of should we cash in at his highest value. I also see the growth of Lonzo the same way we have seen the growth of Rozier. Lonzo is currently on par with Rozier from last year at 3 years younger. With Zion and Ingram initiating offense, Lonzo has played really well off the ball. Some think Melo and Lonzo playing together is a mistake, but some think Melo can continue to bring out the confidence in Lonzo.
I honestly can't believe I am asking any of this as I never thought Lonzo would become a good player. I also never thought Rozier would be this good either though.

Some posters seem to be more motived by gimmicks than what actually makes sense for the team.

please let the lonzo dream die. dude can't even find his offense between two high-tier scorers like zion and ingram... he's getting his spot taken by kira and NAW
he's not some young project player anymore. he's been in the league for a while now and essentially regressed everywhere on offense

Really have no interest in what would be a downgrade at SG right now. I’m certainly not opposed to cashing in on Rozier since we have so much guard depth and Monk could take his spot, but unless we are making a front court upgrade then what is the point? We need rebounding and someone who can defend in the paint.

Re: Fake Trade Thread #3
Surprisingly Lonzo is averaging more 3PA than Rozier and hitting at a 39% clip, but his offense really doesn't pass the eye test to me. I don't trust any part of his game. He's been all over the place his entire career, has been injury prone, inconsistent, about to be severely overpaid because of his last name, and I don't have any interest in pairing the Ball brothers and having LaVar Ball be the unofficial mouthpiece of the Hornets organization, better to keep them separated.

I feel like some people are getting lost in the name on both sides of the argument. I mean I could really go either way on this but Lonzo has shown some growth this year and could likely be had on a 4 year $70 deal that would be a solid get. The other key to this whole thing is we were not talking about just Lonzo but him and Hayes. Hayes fits what we want out of a big. I think those two make us a better team with Monk picking up some of the slack from the loss of Rozier and Ball being able to provide more than the Martins as a extra wing. Add a new starting C on a rookie deal that can grow with our guys and you have a nice setup.

I don't know that New Orleans would do Lonzo for Terry straight up if that was possible, so if they are also giving up Hayes they are probably going to want a 1st round pick to even consider doing that trade.

Maybe they would not do the trade as is and that is fine we stick with Rozier. In this trade they are getting the current best player in the deal and we get players who fit. Neither Ball nor Hayes are worth giving up a 1st for though. Hayes only gets 12 minutes a game for them now so I figured getting a guy who can provide the third scorer they need might be worth it to them and also they don't have to worry about how much to pay Lonzo.

Lonzo has shown growth this year, much like Terry did last year, but at 4 years younger. Monk is tge same age as Lonzo, he is also just now coming around. None of us trusted Terry's game, thought he was to inconsistent, and thought we severely overpaid for him as well. A change to shooting/combo guard changed his career, and looks as if it is doing the same for Lonzo. It is also very possible that if Terry keeps this up, we will severely overpay him a year from now on a contract that will take him into his 30's as a smallish guard. You may be talking about Terry making 8-10 million more per year than Lonzo.
Believe me, I have been a huge critic of Lonzo, and I cannot believe I am here now saying this. With his shooting improvements I just see the upside of a 23 year old coming into his own, and would like to take advantage of getting him before it is to late to get him. Take advantage to Terry's value, it will not be any higher.

If we want to stay alive in the playoff hunt we can't rely on Biyombo to fill in for Zeller.
What's the best big still on a rookie deal that we can get for Biyombo and our 2021 1st? Is there even a rookie deal big worth that?

Interesting, I was pegging Lonzo to a 4 year $72 million deal at $18 million per year, so its good to see another opinion. A continuance of what we are paying Terry for 4 more years. Terry will cost a bit more next offseason.
I agree with all of this. I love what Terry is doing, but we have a better time line with Lonzo. I also think that Lonzo will be the better player 2 years from now. Though Lonzo has changed roles, he is still a better passer than Terry, the secondary playmaking of a Lonzo/Hayward pairing next to Melo is ideal for what Borrego wants on offense.
Getting Hayes, who is only 20 years old, factors into this as well. Young and athletic with potential as the perfect fit with what we need with LaMelo.
LaMelo (19), Lonzo (23), Monk (23), Miles (22), Hayes (20), PJ (22)
What is there not to like about the potential there? These guys are still 3-4 years from their primes.

I like Nicolas Claxton from the Nets, but I imagine you are looking for someone a little more proven. Not a rookie deal, but Javale Mcgee is on a small contract, and could probably be had cheap and we keep the 2021 1st

Claxton plays like Joakim Noah, I'd love to have him in Charlotte. I don't think the Nets are dealing him though.
We probably aren't going to find a long-term answer at the deadline, so you're probably right that a short-term upgrade like McGee for one of our late 2nd is probably the best we can expect.

Maybe he has, but if not I hope Mitch at least calls about Claxton. I could see the Nets not trading him, but you never know as they may be looking for win now pieces for a multi year run.
Mcgee for a late 2nd is probably our best bet.
