Re: Deandre Ayton year 3, the next step
Surprised this is missing the second Coby block..h, but nonetheless a good compilation.
This has both Coby blocks...at 1:40 and 2:20...I really like those plays on D.

Ayton is almost as good as Doncic this year.
With his athletic profile he should eclipse him in impact by the playoffs (which Luka will be watching from a buffet).

Re: Deandre Ayton year 3, the next step
Ayton was better last year than this year on both sides...though is defense is coming back around. However, Ayton was also much better the second half of the season prior to the bubble, like January 28th-March 15th or so, once he adjusted to Rubio.
So I expect the same this year in the second half of the season after the all star break, particularly on offense.

Ayton is definitely having more impact this year than last year on both ends of the floor.
Our offense is heavily dependent on his screening and vertical gravity. His ORTG split reflects this well. His TS% is up, too, 5.5%. That’s huge.
On defense he’s been excellent as well. Perhaps only slightly better this year than last. We are 2nd in the league in PnR defense and he contests more shots than anyone in the league for our 7th ranked overall defense.
Box score stats are misleading af.

Is he still wearing Pumas? I just can’t buy in to the idea that those are a good thing for him.

Re: Deandre Ayton year 3, the next step
I mean when you talk about 2 way impact then DA has to be at least close to KAT. KAT has never led a team anywhere except the year he had Butler. I suppose DA has Booker and CP3 but it feels to me that having KAT as your starting centre puts a real ceiling on your team unless he plays next to a really good defensive, rim protecting PF of which there are very few around.

Re: Deandre Ayton year 3, the next step
Spoiler:
Last night was (maybe?) Ayton's best overall performance in the NBA. He was engaged, strong, tough. He hit his J's. He was absolutely better than KAT last night... and I did not expect that. He played like a #1 pick. The kid is putting it together, and we may FINALLY have our franchise center! What is he 22 years old? How good is Ayton 3 years from now?

This team is really fun to watch. Go Suns! Don't screw it up Sarver!

Nice. But I would trade him for a right to pay John No Defense Collins 100+ mil. He is better at dunking, as some on here say.

We'd be fools to deal Ayton. The list of teams who would not love to start him at center is small. DA's probably been the fourth or fifth best C in the league this year behind Jokic, Embiid, Gobert and maybe Adebayo.
I wouldn't mind adding Collins for free. He may not be a bad fit *next* to Ayton.
Even hypothetically, if we were dealing Ayton to the Hawks, I'd want my choice of assets not named Trae Young and DeAndre Hunter, including at least Collins and Okongwu. But even then, no matter how they mix in Huerter, Reddish, Bogdon or draft picks, my preference would be to stick with Deandre. We're not the Wolves. We're building something here!

Can the trio of Ayton/Booker/Bridges be a good enough core to win a title ?
Because we are going to have to decide who to pay, and if we extend Ayton/Bridges along with Booker - thats our core.

I'd have Ayton 8th but the goal is to get him to that star level tier for us to have a big 3.
Star - Jokic, Embiid, Gobert, Adebayo, Towns
Fringe - Vucevic, Capela, Ayton, Allen, Wood

Re: Deandre Ayton year 3, the next step
Last night when he was interviewed on TNT, it made me appreciate Ayton a little more. Just a super nice and respectful kid. Took Shaq's criticism (soft criticism for Shaq) in stride. Even if he never reaches the heights I envision for him, I think he's a great locker room guy and teammate and that is important too. I am starting to see some improvements though and I think by the playoffs, he'll be playing a lot better. He and Booker are finally starting to develop a little chemistry as well.

This sort of optimism and even-keeled analysis has no place here.

This is the sort of play that makes you think Ayton will lay an egg in the playoffs. You get blocked, and decide to simply jog back on D? Where's the fire?

He probably got frustrated for not getting a foul. He was last on D, next to one of the bigs in Turner, so probably just wanted to stay and defend a potential 3. Anyway, you can find such play for anyone in a game. Below play on D by Mikal, should we worry every good O player will average 40ppp on him in the playoffs ?

Ayton still had more blocks, O rebounds than him, same steals.
Posted in this thread earlier that he's passing very well to cutting Bridges. They had two more such plays in this game.

One more at 5:40 2nd qtr, not in the video.

Re: Deandre Ayton year 3, the next step
Are you not worried about how passive Ayton has continually been looking ever since that brief 5 game decent stretch he had? It's just very very frustrating. Every now and again he does some nice things - that pass to the Bridges cut was beautiful and he's shown that every now and again.
But all those good moments are dominated by vast stretches of passive play. He now rarely does any sort of self-creation in the post, barely gets any and1s, frequently fumbles passes, brings the ball down low and gets stripped, is passive in receiving passes at the top of the key which leads to turnovers. Even his FT shooting looks lazy with a flat shot. The 3-ball is also something that rarely makes an appearance, and when he does shoot it, it's mostly very flat a'la Bender.
At this juncture, his offensive production is limited to putbacks and anything that Paul and Booker serve to him on a plate. He'll show a couple of nice midrange jumpers now and then, but even those are fairly limited.
Now I get that Ayton in some ways is a victim of the team's success in that Monty & Co. deem it more important to share the ball and get good shots as opposed to force-feeding Ayton, but Ayton needs to realize quickly that this league waits for nobody. The team has gotten good quickly and isn't going to have the patience to spoon feed him. Either he works his butt off and improves his offensive skills the way Bridges has, or this FO will deem him dispensable and use him in a trade in the not too distant future.
