Weaver's first Trade Deadline: Thursday March 25th

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Sun Mar 7, 2021 3:52 pm

It will be interesting to see how Weaver's first trade deadline goes. He has 3 assets that competing teams want in Wright, Plumlee, and Grant. These are all guys he has brought in. He also has two leftovers from last season in SVI and Sekou who he might not have any attachments to as players.

Will he try to make a move to add another draft pick or young prospect? Is he concerned we might have a logjam at PG once Hayes and Wright get healthy?

He was aggressive in the way he attacked the Draft and Free Agency and he's already make a trade of Derek Rose this season, not to mention multiple trades before the season started. It feels very unlikely the next 2.5 weeks go by without at least one more trade from Trader Troy.

The rumors will go far past the actual trades. I mean I doubt he's willing to part with any firsts, Wright and Plumlee have value on the trade market, but it will have to surpass the value they have on the Pistons, and how exciting will be an Ellington trade? And is it even worth it? The biggest possible gain is for a contending team to offer a great package for Wright, Plumlee, and Ellington combined, and that just seems unlikely.

There's just no way we trade Grant. You don't send out the message to possible free agents that if you are choose us, we'll choose to trade you. Granted, if Golden State was offering the Minny pick - of course there are extreme exceptions, but I just don't see it.

I could see Pistons making some minor moves. Letting go of Svi or an Ellington for nada to open up some roster spots. Get Lee on actual contract.

I think the solid value on Grants contract and his relatively scalable skill set mean Weaver will probably keep him around.

Wright being traded is very possible. If we can get a second for Ellington (possible) I think we’d go for that.

Plumlee I could see being traded in the right move, I’d be surprised if it happens though.

I think people hoping for a busy deadline will probably be disappointed.

I just hope they can get a 1st for Wright. Or at least two 2nds
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

I bet he buys a rookie contract "bust" with those two second rounders he acquired for the 2021 draft. Use McGruder's 5M and the picks to make it work salary wise.

50-50 on Delon being dealt. 10% Plumlee is moved. 0% Grant is moved. Ellington probably added into Delon deal - otherwise probably not enough of a return to bother.

I feel like it’s a almost a guarantee that Ellington doesn’t finish this season with the pistons. Hopefully in a trade.

Wright, Mykhailiuk, or plumlee getting dealt depends more on what’s offered for them, I can’t imagine they are being actively shopped.

As far as Grant, I think it would have to be an amazing offer for him to get dealt. I don’t see it happening.

McGruder finishes the season with Detroit unless we can pull off 2nd(s) and his contract for a recent lottery bust. I think someone else said something like this.

I’d like to see Ellington to, let’s say, Philadelphia. They send some non 2021 2nd to us and we tack on the clippers to acquire Mfiondu Kabengele and the clippers send money to cover his contract (they need the spot open) and we send them a non existent 2nd.

Then some McGruders contract, for a rookie contract bust. Let’s say Kevin Knox, say the Knicks send him in a trade and then we pluck him to clear up next season cap space for that team.

Do your worst crymson

i think ellington is the only vet that has a chance of getting moved before the deadline. his quick trigger coming off screens would be an asset to a lot of playoff teams in a ~10 MPG role.

i'd rather keep future second rounders than attach them to mcgruder to get rid of his contract and bring in another DSJ-type "reclamation project".

McGruder's deal for next season isn't guaranteed for any amount so that definitely won't happen.

Ellington and maybe Wright are the only guys I see having a chance to be moved. Hayes might come back for the last 25 games or so and that crowds the point guard rotation so if Delon can be traded for value I would jump on it. With Wayne gone that would make the young rotation pretty simple and easy.

On the wings they can run Bey, Jackson, and Svi with sprinkles of McGruder or Sirvydis if needed. Grant plays most of his time at the four and Sekou backs him up. Maybe Jereami sees some time at the three in certain lineups too. The team is covered at all those spots though regardless of how it ends up.

Plumlee and Stewart at center. Okafor will be back at some point but... yeah. I don't see Mason getting moved this year without someone else on the team that can take some pressure of of Isaiah. That's not Jahlil.

yeah.. i guess i just question what that is. if all we get for him is a second rounder then it's definitely not worth it to trade him. and since i really doubt anyone gives up a first rounder i think it's probably better to just keep him.

someone has to show these youngsters how to play and i think grant, wright and plumlee are great players for that. they're all on bargain contracts so they really shouldn't be moved unless we get a good asset in return. obviously grant's value is higher but for plumlee and wright that means a FRP in the near future or a young prospect. i don't think that's likely so i don't see us moving any of them before the deadline.

Much to my surprise, I once again find myself agreeing with you. I honestly would be surprised if anything big went down. Barring some sweet deal for another 1st in this year's draft, I think at best, we see a small deal for another 2nd, or some other no name player, or cash.

Weaver made a big splash already, I think he'll wait to see how the ping pong balls line up before he makes another deal unless, as I stated earlier, someone comes in with an amazing offer for Grant that just can't be refused.

Plumlee should only leave if we get a first. He is too important for the team.

Delon value is 2 seconds in the best case scenario.

I'm thinking with Weavers reputation as a mad scientist that we see him make some moves. Let's be real the guy just cant help himself

I think Weaver will see the youth logjam at PG and decide to pull the trigger on trading Wright, particularly if someone comes knocking with a late first.

Ellington we should definitely try to claim any asset possible.

Plumlee has been solid and will be important to have around when Killian returns so he should stay.

I imagine Grant is essentially untradeable in Weaver's eyes.

This is not a long-term "Philly Process" tear-down. Weaver is trying to build while tearing at the same time. Signing Grant and Plumlee was part of his process. He's not trading either of them. Not now. (unless there's just a stupid offer he can't refuse). I'll be shocked if I'm wrong.

I see Ellington being moved for probably a 2nd rounder and then possibly Wright but I doubt it

If Hayes is progressing to come back this season that I could see Wright dealt, though Delon can also play off-guard and signed through next season. I don't think DSJ will be retained but let walk as a FA so Wright could be kept through until TDL next year.

Philly for Thybulle or Ferguson+ would make some sense. Reportedly Weaver wanted Knox for Rose, so maybe he wants a SF reclamation project type still for the roster. If Sekou is seen more as a four or even 4/5, and Grant starting PF Detroit is a little shallow at SF.

I think he can use Wright, okafur, Ellington, and Sivi for picks, or send them all to Brooklyn for Dimmwiddie, and there 1st and 2nd rd pick

I don't really trust Weaver yet. I'm holding my breath.

Not that we would get it, but I would need

Ellington - a good second
Wright - a low first or 3+ seconds
Plumlee - a low first or 3+ seconds
Grant - a prime asset like the Minny pick

All bringing back expirings, except maybe the last one
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy
