Yeah. If nothing else, signing Drummond and cutting Len seems like a net upgrade to me.
Or better yet, sign Drummond and then see if you can trade away Lopez for a 2nd round pick.

The 2d option would be great.
Could we even do the first option & stay under the tax? We have to pay Len whether we cut him or not. & the veteran minimum part of what Drummond's owed is on us as well, I believe.

Esshh... Maybe you tuned out after January, but Grant has regressed back to earth after his torrid start.
His last 12 games: 22 & 5 with a TS of 52% and more turnovers than assist. Decent on ball defender with poor awareness/team defense.
Im not sure he is any better than Rui right now.
As far as trades for players with our pick, I would be eyeballing Christian Wood. We can send Bertans and then can send us the Portland 1st back to us (22), or we can get a third team to send them expiring filler and send us a pick for Bertans. Dont care.
Other than that, i dont see any teams that fit the mold of having an asset worthy of our pick that is open to tanking.
- Memphis, Chicago, GSW, Pacers, NOP, NYK, ATL, Hornets, etc. are all in the 12-20 range, but all appear to be attempting to compete.
- Magic & Kings appear to be bad, but they seem to indicate that they have their 'Young Core" they want to move forward with.
- OKC, Cavs & Detroit might be interested, but they have no one outside of SGA that I would even consider trading our pick for.
Knicks might be open to trading their two picks in the late teens to move up for plug and play type (Barnes?), but who knows.
Toronto could try full rebuild and move of OG or Siakim, but thats a tough lift financially for us.

People have been saying this for 2 years and it hasn't happened. I'm not particularly worried about it.
And if they did trade a lotto pick for someone, it would absolutely be a rim-protecting center. The only real options I see are Wood and Turner, but I seriously doubt either deal would happen.

I'm expecting NY to be the team most likely to make a foolish trade to try to help their playoff chances. According to the ESPN Trade Machine, they have a hair over 15 million salary cap room, and Bertans salary is exactly $15 mil, so if we trade them Bertans for one of those picks, ESPN says it works - though RealGM's Trade Checker says it doesn't.

I think we have just under $1M room under the luxtax. Signing Drummond to a vet minimum deal would cost a prorated $1.6M. For half the season, that's just $0.8M.
pcbothwel wrote:Yup. They should just go all in on picking up our bench parts.
Bertans, Brown, Moe for Frank, Rivers, Mitchell Robinson, Dallas 1st.
We end up with 9M TPE, Mitchell Robinson, pick in the 19-22 range and ~20M in savings next year.

But, is that how it works? I.e. it's a matter of how much cash went out?
I thought it was the annual salary level of the players on the roster (including salaries like Len's would be, i.e. that you couldn't subtract from the calculation). No doubt I'm wrong about that.
