You know who sucked even more as a 19 year old and turned out pretty good? Zach LaVine.
Zach LaVine was the 13th pick! About the same spot where PWill should have gone - and would have, if not for the Bulls.
Stop pretending like we're playing four dimensional chess here. You don't use a top 5 pick on this type of player. LaMelo Ball is 19 as well, was picked one spot ahead of Patrick and he's already better than anyone of our guards not named Zach.
This pick was another blunder by the Bulls and it will haunt them.
Huh? Pat is an efficient 13 and 6 (per 36) player who has tremendous defensive upside and a heck of a shot.... all at age 19. I'm not saying that he'll become Kawhi as Kawhi had a PER of 16.6 even first year (but age 20), but Kawhi is the only similar comparison at such a ripe age, given Pat's physical profile and playing style. Check out Jimmy's stats though... very similar, and Jimmy was 22. Anyway, if we are to be honest, this was a
very crappy draft. We lucked out on at the minimum, getting a solid rotational player and at the maximum, getting a future star like Kawhi.
Patrick Williams has a PER of 10.9, which is very good for a 19 year old.
Here are the picks after ours-
Isaac Okoro - 6.5 PER, age 20
Onyeka Okongwu - 12.9 PER, age 20
Killian Hayes - -1.9 PER, age 20
Obi Toppin - 11.2 PER, age 20
our beloved Deni Avdija - 7.6 PER, age 20
So 3/5 of those guys are total busts and 2/5 are roughly at Pat's level, a year older.
We did a fine job. You draft for star power, and of the guys listed above, P Will is definitely a more encouraging prospect (upside), given what we've seen. There are obvious areas to address, which he will address moving forward, and the improvements are certainly achievable, and will make a big difference in his game. Many of these improvements, such as handles, will give him the confidence to start taking over more.
I'm all about crapping all over our FO (as prior to this year, we had a different management that actually deserved it). But now is not the right battle. I wanted Wiseman, but he went top 3. Pat looks great for a 19 year old and by all indications, he works hard.
How many fantastic 19 year olds have there been? Most 19 year olds are raw... like Pat. I mean, remember how stupid we were at age 19?
As weird as it sounds, we now have a competent, accredited front office. I've been waiting for this for decades. They're doing a hell of a job with what they've been given. The draft is no exception, and the Spurs wanting Pat, not to mention the attention he's getting from other teams, should be plenty of proof of that upside.
