Hutchison played well as a rookie; he went downhill some his 2d year. This year has been a disaster for him. He was injured, & I think he has problems w/ the coach. Or... something! Definitely needs a new start.

I didn't want to trade TBJr. but I think Hutchison can play. Assuming the other stuff can be worked out.

Gafford for Wagner is an absolute steal for us!

If Hutchison could get his 3 ball to fall (like it did in college) he would be a solid player. He’s already a good defender.

Hutchison is a scrub. He was filler to make the numbers work and will be an expiring contract to throw into a future trade. At least he is a mil cheaper than TBJ

There was no reason to keep Wagner. He was the third-string center. Add a little defense for the future. I guess Rolo is going nowhere.

Eh, I think it’s a terrible move.

Yet another undersized guard for the Blazers, if they weren’t going to spring for something approaching the rookie max, what makes them think signing Powell will be any easier?

Wagner was going to be gone in the offseason, as is Hutchinson. So this deal is basically Troy Brown at $5.2M for one more year for Gafford at $1.8M a year for the next 2 years. That seems like a pretty good deal to me.

I'm still annoyed that we wasted a year of TBJ's life by not developing him, but ultimately, I question whether he has the defensive chops to ever be anything more than a bench player. I feel like Gifford has more upside. With a bit more improvement, maybe he could be a Rashaun Holmes tier starting center. At the very least, he is the rim-runner/shot blocker archetype that should complement Bryant's stretch 5 archetype nicely.

Gafford advanced defensive metrics (and blocks) are good. +1 DBPM and very good DRtg (109, 107) for 2 years in a row. First time we get an athletic big in years. He's very raw offensively. I worry about his ability to catch Westbrook's missiles

Gafford is a terrific young player. He was good as a rookie & better this year. I absolutely love this pick up.

Hutchison, otoh, is a mystery to me. But, if we got the guy I saw his rookie year... great. His 2d year was a slight drop -- but only b/c his usage was higher.

We didn't get worse overall; much more likely we got better. I don't like seeing Troy go, but we did well.

You watched Hutchison play as a rookie? & last year?

What makes you think he's a scrub?

Gafford’s 1st and 2nd year numbers are almost identical to Richaun Holmes’. His offensive game is improving. Everything is trending up. Still only 22.

He’s exactly the type of player we needed to acquire. The extra year on the rookie deal is huge. It’s a solid trade.

The Brown/Gafford trade doesn't really say anything about the direction of the franchise. The move is a lateral one. It's not selling win-now assets for the future, nor is it trading the future to win now.

I'd really like to see us trade Lopez, Bertans and/or Neto for picks/prospects. Certainly Lopez should be shopped hard because we already have Len and Gafford at center.

The trade is another indication that Sheppard is at least more competent and hard-working than Grunfeld. Grunfeld wouldn't have scoured other teams' rosters to find an underutilized young center with upside like Gafford. He would have just traded for some big name has-been like Javale McGee.

I'm not saying Sheppard is a great GM. But he's better than Ernie.

Actually, Gafford's stats compare favorably with Mitchell Robinson. Per 36, more blocks, assists, better FG% and much better FT% but worse in steals, TOs and rebounding. Gafford's DBPM is also better.

I like this move.

Ernie found Chris McCullough.

I'm curious about what you thought was great about Hutchison as a rookie and why you think he dropped in his 2nd year while his stats were clearly better.

Given how we've been using TBJ (which is a big given), it's a good trade, because we now have our backup center on a very cheap contract for the next 2 seasons. Gafford has no skills, but he's the most athletic center we've had in a long time.
