Pretty underwhelming deadline. The team continues to show absolutely no direction.

Grats to Moe Wagner. Boston obviously sees something in him - trading Theis for him.

I think that was more of a lonely situation, imo he is at half the cost.

Honestly, it was more than I expected. The GM traded away players that the coach wouldn't play, so at least they seemed to work together - which is something I don't think they've been doing.

Your phone has a great sense of humor.True - money has something to do with it, but still - that's putting faith in him to likely be a rotation player for Boston for the rest of the season.
Maybe. But, they're not really contending this year, so maybe it's win-win for them -- if they like him, good. If he plays worse than Theis, they get a higher draft pick.

Yeah, they can contend this year, and I'd say there's zero or less chance that they're trying to tank. They can at least get to the Eastern finals. They're 1.5 games behind 4th place Charlotte in the East right now. I'd bet on them over Charlotte to end up in 4th place. Actually, they were ahead of Charlotte just 2 games ago. Last season, the Heat finished 5th in the East and got to the NBA Championship series.

Makes more sense than my idea....
Only, they were at $116m before trades, so... oh duh, they picked up Evan Fournier. So, yeah, probably done to lower salary.

We already established that they did it for money. The point was about them depending on him to play. Now it seems they also acquired Kornet, so we'll see.

Re: Official Trade Thread -- Part XL
Shamsports has updated their salary table. It now says we have $2.4M in luxtax room. (It was just under $1M IIRC.)
That's enough to pay a vet minimum contract or two. We could sign a buyout guy and convert Mathews' two-way contract into a vet minimum contract that could immediately be extended.

So add Drummond, LMA, and Otto Porter...nate33 wrote:Shamsports has updated their salary table. It now says we have $2.4M in luxtax room. (It was just under $1M IIRC.)

Actually we'd be better than we are currently.

I thought you couldn't extend a vet minimum contract -- but, come to think of it, we wouldn't have to use that designation on him to sign him to a cheap deal. B/c he's been a 2-way player, we'd be signing him to his rookie contract.
I just made that up -- but... it could still be true!

No doubt. Last week I wrote about how the first thing I did during them all star break was plot out our opponents leading up to the deadline. My findings:
7 games:
Ceiling Wins: max of 3-4
Floor wins: 1+
My projection was 1-6 to 3-4 w/most likely being 2-5 or 3-4.
Going 1-6 was a godsend considering the propensity for dumber than —— win now stupidity from the halfwit owner and his clown car front offices. Having Beal demanding such stupidity is yet another reason I wanted him dealt. Breathing a sigh of relief now.

Re: Official Trade Thread -- Part XL
If they land Ujiri, I hope the first move he makes is trading Beal on draft night. They could atleast land 3+ 1st round picks or a top 4 pick in the 2021 draft.
This team continues to have absolutely no direction. Sheppard doubled down on trying to make the playoffs and “winning now” last night in his media availability. How stupid can a front office be? Do they watch these games? They employ the worst coach in the NBA. Westbrook is out there shooting 3-15 with 8 turnovers. Beal completely stopped playing defense 2 years ago. They have a revolving door of replacement level bigs. At best they are a first round exit with no upside as a team.
It’s all so stupid. I honestly believe that Sheppard/Ted believe and are aiming to sign another veteran scrub with the MLE and pick 8 or 9th in the draft again, and hire another mediocre coach to magically turn this team into a decently entertaining 2nd round exit. That’s their most ambitious goal.
Don’t be surprised when this off-season results in signing Dieng to the MLE, hiring Mark Jackson, and drafting Keon Johnson.

Don’t get me wrong, you definitely CAN retool without a full rebuild (trading Beal) and that is what they have tried to do in the last couple of years, but it requires you to make good coaching hires and hit on your draft picks. They have done neither. When was the last time the wizards even “hit” on draft pick? Otto Porter?

The only way to rebuild with Beal is to first get him to agree to an extension. You can't rebuild if you are constantly worrying about him getting frustrated and leaving in free agency. Beal has to totally buy in to the rebuild and put his money where his mouth is. If he won't do that, then trade him.
This is not a criticism of Beal. He has every right to be impatient and want to play on a team with contention hopes.

I seriously doubt that Beal will sign an extension. NBA players just don’t do that. The chance to hit unrestricted free agency at 28 years old is just too appealing. You’ve got his wife and brothers all publicly complaining about the front office not trading picks away for Derozan or Markkanen. You either trade him or risk losing him in UFA.
And I’m not a salary cap guy, but what kind of deal would we be signing Beal to? He’s obviously going to get the max amount. How much is the veteran max? How much value will he even have if we are signing him to some super max contract through age 32? Seems to me that if our actual goal is to build a championship contender from the ground up, the best move is to trade him.

Re: Official Trade Thread -- Part XL
Jabari Parker was waived. He's a talented offensive player, and I enjoyed watching him play the one year he was here. On the downside, he's an indifferent defender, and not much of a 3 point threat.
I know we should be developing Avdija and Bonga, but this year they stink. They're not NBA caliber players at this point. And Bertans isn't much better.
