Holy ****. Did not see this coming. At least not at this juncture. I'm generally not a big fan of trading up before the draft actually happens, unless it's to #1. Who knows what the teams ahead of you do? What if a team jumps up to #2 and grabs the QB you love? It's also a very steep price tag, though about what you'd expect to move up nine spots for a QB. But that's basically enough to have landed Watson prior to his massage issues.
That said, this team desperately needs a young QB to develop. And the future picks will hopefully be very late in the round. Having a young QB can make all the difference. We clear tons of cap space by ditching Garoppolo, and should be able to keep our nucleus together. It was probably this or letting guys like Warner and possibly Bosa walk when they came up for extension. No rookie QB has even reached the SB, though no rookie QB has ever played with the sort of supporting cast we will have. Pressure is on to perform immediately, which is not typically the sort of situation I would want to throw a rookie QB into, but so it goes.
