Fred is a high BBIQ player, no doubt in my mind about that.
But after skimming through this thread, it's apparent posters are confusing BBIQ and ability. They're two different things.
FVV has always been great on the defensive end, both on and off the ball. He sticks with his man pretty well and is disruptive when his man has the ball. The problem comes in on the offensive end. He's an unathletic, short PG. That, in and of itself is not the problem. Lowry and Paul for example have the same limitations and are HOF quality PGs. The issue with FVV is mostly around his lack of quick first step. Because he doesn't have one, he is overly reliant on his 3 point shot. Thank God he shoots it at a very good clip but even then, it really affects his usefulness on the court.
Not having that quick first step not only means he relies a lot on his 3s (most of FVVs shot attempts are from behind the arc), it also means he's heavily reliant on the screen to get him into the midrange/painted area. He shoots the midrange pretty well but he just doesn't get a chance to take many of them because he can't get there. This also means he's spending a lot of time pounding the rock waiting for the screen to be set. Guys in the NBA go over the top of screens really quickly and so it doesn't always guarantee him the separation he needs to operate.
The few times he does get to the rim, he attempts to score over multiple defenders, which is mostly (and quite obviously) unsuccessful. So when you consider that he barely attempts shots at the rim, and he when he does, they're heavily contested, it's not a surprise that his percentages are woefully low in there.
He averages a decent amount of assist but doesn't really coordinate an offense.
So what you have with FVV is LITERALLY a 3&D point guard. His best skills are his 3 and defense. Everything else is either mediocre or subpar.
All that to say that you can win a chip with him as your starting PG but you MUST have a superstar at your SG or SF. Someone who is at least an above average playmaker, shooter & slasher.
If you're going to keep OG long term, that means you need to have a superstar SG. If you can't get one of those, you need to trade FVV.
