Chandler Hutchinson the man the mystery

Post#1 » by doclinkin » Sun Mar 28, 2021 4:58 pm

Separating him out from the conversation on the trade:

Interview.

A sampler:

Known for defense. Athletic as any other player currently on the team. He needs work on his shooting and range, but we have a good developmental staff for that if he is willing to work. Fans seem to expect nothing from the trade for him, looking at Gafford as the primary feature of the deal, but there are flashes here of some ability and talent if it can be fostered.

Not a young player at age 25, Hutchison's experience in the league is relatively limited due to injury history. He has had to sit for stretches due to back spasms, shoulder injury, a broken toe, a hip injury, and now COVID.

This last may actually prove to be of long term benefit. Players who are even in excellent health take a while to recover from injuries. We saw Bertans struggle to regain his fitness, and even pocket terminator Russ took months to recuperate from a strained quad. The virus forces you to take stock and rebuild your body bit by bit.

Now a player who has been basically Chandelier Hurtingson up to now, comes to the Wizards as a project for our frankenstein squad to rebuild. Here however we get to see if our biomedical analysis staff and new director of sports medicine Daniel Medina have any chops to make a new player out of him. Medina has been given the mission to make our recovery and sports medicine program into a cutting edge advantage for our team. Chandler comes to the team with very little time on court this season (in court? still curious what his personal issues have been...) and has only had practice time to work on his outside shot and fitness.

Is it possible that his injury history turns around? Yes. Even nutrition alone can make a big difference. Early in Beal's career, he struggled with his health. Recovery from injury and fatigue slowed him down. Then he began to take seriously his nutrition and conditioning. In particular he cut out sugar. Sugar is a killer for recovery. The struggle to recover from COVID may force a player to consider how to rebuild every aspect of their game. In this case we have a talented athlete who has been unable to consistently build his skills due to an inability to put in repetitions. In Chicago he had begun to increase his range and the reliability of his outside shot when he was sidelined again by medical issues.

The raw materials are there. His frame looks like it can take good weight. He has legs to carry him above the rim with a couple steps on the runway. If the shoulder and back are sound, he can develop the same core strength that has allowed Beal to seek contact now, instead of pulling up and fading away from it as he did his first few years in the league.

The point to me is that here you have a throwaway player coming on a discount, who may have hidden upside that has been untapped due to an aspect that can actually be addressed with hard work and smart trainers: strength and conditioning. He comes to a team with a workout madman in Russ, and a role model of professionalism in Beal.

The upside is achievable. Players like Raul Neto are not going to get taller. Bonga will not suddenly develop booster rocket leaping power. But Hutchison need only be healthy and hit the weights to overcome the thing that has held him back the most. Fitness, range shooting, defense, and foul rates are the areas of players' games that do reliably improve with reps and experience in the league.

In any case, it does seem like one area of potential market inefficienccies to exploit. If this team could develop a Phoenix Suns calibre medical squad, we could uncover hidden value in players whose talents have been suppressed and cloaked by nicks and dings that keep them off court. That's where you get sudden all star talents like the Nuggets were able to build out of Porter. It's a gamble, but on low-cost roster filler, it seems like a decent risk to shore up the back end of your bench with reclamation projects, and become known as a destination where players can rejuvenate their ability, and value to a team.

Common denominator among all these new players. They tend to play better before they get into practice and Brooks starts ‘coaching’ them.

Sheppard should keep them all in a bubble and forbid them from practicing with the team or learning the ‘offense,’

What stood out most to me during those highlights was a the movement without the ball. He wasn’t just standing around at the three point line like everyone else tends to do. As everyone was focused on the raw energy and determination of Westbrook trying to get into the lane, Hutch was sneaking in with everyone’s back turned, and Russ was actually making the right play. It even happened on the play with Rui, and Hutch came right into the paint, hands up, ready to shoo the 8 footer. Well done young man!
Just let the young boys play! It's truly the only hope at this point.

He already has a leg up on Bertans by showing that he could have a great game after not playing for a long period of time. As stated above i loved his of the ball movent to the hoop.

Good point, hopefully these new guys won't look/play lost like Troy after Scotty starts "coaching them up". Also, the dynamics will completely change when the hero-ball tandem of Beal/Westbrook are back together. Nice debut by a hungry player looking tp prove his worth in the league.

Here's a confirmation of this from another angle -- just as Hutch had a great first game w/ us, so too Troy Brown has been great for the Bulls. Out from under Brooks's "guiding hand."
Breaking News: In a shocking development, Wizards owner Ted Leonsis has sold the NBA franchise to a consortium of participants in a discussion board devoted to the team on realgm.com. Details to follow....

Per Scott Brooks, confirming what we all saw last night:

“ “Those two guys in the trade was what we needed,” coach Scott Brooks said. “We need an athletic wing, we need a really wise cutter. Russell and Brad take a lot of attention. They have not only their two guys guarding them, they’ve got a lot of eyeballs on them. When you have your man looking at the ball, there’s a time and place to cut. What he did tonight, we haven’t had that either. You can’t teach that overnight.”
Just let the young boys play! It's truly the only hope at this point.

Actually, I don't think the dynamics completely change when Beal returns. Both Russ and Beal have always been willing passers...and if a teammate works hard and makes smart cuts to get open (like Hutch did last night), Russ and BB will get them the ball more often than not.

It's as much a matter of fit as coaching. Hutch is effective (or at least last night he was) because he moves well without the ball.

Troy, otoh, is at his best with the ball in his hands...which he wasn't getting an opportunity to do here in DC. Hopefully, the trade will be a boost for both players careers.

LOL I've never heard of the "keep them away from Brooks" strategy but I think you guys are on to something.

Do you stop watching after 3 quarters? :) The 4Q is all about Wes and Brad going hero and not passing the ball much, especially in close games

I watched last night...Russ had 21 assists and made most of the big shots in the 4th quarter...and the Zards won. I can live with that. :)

Is Hutchison still with the team? Any idea why he's not playing if he is?

Post#16 » by BallinBug » Fri Apr 23, 2021 1:28 am

I havent seen Hutchison on court, or even on the bench in quite a while. I assumed with Deni out I'd see him. Is he still on the team? I dont see any injuries listed for him.

He should be in the D league taking 1000 shots per day. It should be about player development to see if we can move him next year.

I'd rather move Hutch and re-sign Bonga for less.

There's a hitch in Hutch's shot. It just looked like he's got a bad shooting touch - not just in his jump shot but in his drives to the hoop. It's hard to get past that when watching him. Too bad the G League season wasn't extended.
