Re: Around the NBA - More Blessings For Everyone
A random yet somewhat cliche story that nobody asked for:
When I was a teenager back in the early 2000s (yes, I know) I absolutely hated the Spurs. I thought they were boring. I hated Duncan and his robotic post moves. I hated Bruce Bowen. I hated Parker's face. I hated how inevitably good they were. They were realists in a game of artists. They were ruining the party, so to speak.
Yet, while I was too busy complaining about these optics, I was completely missing the fact that they represented everything I love about sports. Loyalty, a sense of identity, toughness, humility, unselfishness, decency, and even creativity through Ginobili.
I'm not complaining about how things have changed or whatnot, or implying that yesterday's era was better than the one we live in today, but in a league where a few marquee players have seemingly lost all perspective on decency by forcing trades, betraying teammates and disrespecting teammates and fanbases alike ("that's all folks"), I must say that I did not enjoy the Spurs as much as I should have during the peak of their reign. In retrospect, it feels stupid.
Thankfully, I had learned to appreciate them by the time they made it back to the Finals in 2013 and 2014.

Those Spurs teams were quite different than previous ones though, they were the pinnacle of ball movement and spacing, like how Utah Jazz plays now but with less 3s, the 00s Spurs made it impossible to watch their games with boring defensive grind it out ball that lulled you to sleep
I thought Pops was really the GOAT for adapting to that changing meta, which Phil failed to adapt, but then he really inexplicably went back to old school with Aldridge + another big which he at least quit on insisting for like the last 2 years

People were clowning 7 Seconds Suns for never winning in post season but Pops saw if Amare doesnt get that suspension they would have beat Spurs and evolved Spurs to those late era teams with great spacing and ball movement

Wait a minute...
(yes, I know) = you think you're old now
or
(yes, I know) = you think you're still young?
I loved every iteration of Tim Duncan. His boring, methodical ass is my spirit animal.

Their ball movement when they also had Diaw was the best basketball ever played.

Re: Around the NBA - More Blessings For Everyone
You could just argue that Gregg Popovich is the GOAT of coaches. Through his tenure with Spurs he adapted his coaching style to his players or the different era's the game is played. No player ever saif a bad word about him. I think even Kawhi sometimes regrets his decision to leave them. I remember a game in Kawhi's rookie season, when he made a bad mistake. Pop immediatly pulled him out, let him walk over to him, give him so advice and he he was right back on the scorers table. It's such a little moment, but it shows what kinda coach he is.

Re: Around the NBA - More Blessings For Everyone
The reason Pop is not winning anymore is simple - the players are soft and too overpowered. He didn't decline, he just can't coach sensitive divas anymore. Sadly, those are all the good remaining players nowadays. The way Spurs were playing and with prime Kawhi - they were winning at least one or two more chips during the Warriors Era. Not only by himself, but someone would have joined him and Aldridge and they would have wiped the floor with KD and Steph.
Pop evolved as a coach and give him good players and he'll show you that. But he didn't evolve as a person. Or should I say he didn't devolve to play by some divas rules. That's why he is not winning.
Phil would have adapted better to today's ugly situation and overpowered players. He's never been a tactical mind, he is more of a philosopher and psychologist.
Purely basketball-wise and understanding, Pop is the GOAT. But Phil is more successful with his soft skills and player would love him more and play for him no matter what. So it's close.

Re: Around the NBA - More Blessings For Everyone
I would diasgree. Phil, of course also on of the greatest had the luck to have a few of the all time great players under his wing. He tried to implement the fuggin triangle to knicks, which nobody used anymore for a reason. He also had his up and downs with his players like Kobe and Shaq, but those, in this case Kobe had the drive to proof himself.

You still need superstars to win a championship.
Coaching is still really important and it’s kind of ironic to me that the style we see today in nba is actually really pop’s corner 3 offense from the 2012-2015.
Pop basically ran a offense that specifically looked for corner threes right when everyone was tuning out Dantonis pnr fast paced offense
Then gsw came along and tuned up the secondary transition offense basically taking cues from how doc rivers popularized never going for offensive rebounds.
Today feels like a straight infusion of everything we’ve seen over the last 10 years. Running quickly up the court, secondary transition, quick pnr, and corner three
If I had to guess the next evolution in offense is rebounder always runs up the court. A lot of times you see a rebound and a lazy pass to the pg or a sideways pass to a g/f. in the future that won’t happen, the rebounder will have the responsibility of running the ball up the court or making a quick forward pass that’s atleast to the half court line and initiating the offense

They have the most talent. They could put it all together and roll over everyone but also could fold up and have a team mental breakdown...I am rooting for the latter

they look unbeatable when there's only 2 of them on most nights. it's sad but i can't see them losing.
