Bad teams usually get high draft picks. High draft picks usually lead to championships. I've went through this on here... years ago.

The Spurs tanked for Tim Duncan. The Cavs tanked for Lebron James. D-Wade was drafted in one of the strongest drafts in NBA history because Miami sucked. Kareem went to the Bucks because they sucked the year before. The key is when to be bad.. or just be bad until you're not. This was the year to SUCK.. trust me.

To say tanking or being bad doesn't work is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard someone say about the NBA.

But it doesn’t.. besides you naming old ass situations in an old nba.. bron didn’t even win with Cleveland his first stint around with them.. as of late I don’t see too many teams who blatantly tanked and are now contenders in the league other than the 76ers. Most teams just drafted soundly wherever they fell in the draft which is what the Knicks will need to do

The Warriors won 29 games and then 26 games in consecutive season. They drafted Curry and Thompson. They went to 5 straight nba finals and won 3 of them. They were pretty bad in those two years.

The Cavs won 17 games the year before they drafted Lebron. First stint, second stint? If he didn't have the first stint and the NBA finals appearance there would've never been a second stint. Cleveland went to 5 NBA finals and won it once. What the Fux are the Knicks winning anyway? one Chip is miles better than nothing.

Dwayne Wade went to 5 and won 3. Miami sucked the year before they Drafted Wade. He was a top 5 pick. He was a pretty critical player in all those series.

Those are like the last 15 Champs. Outside of LA. How much more current do you want me to get?

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has recently come under scrutiny from media and fans due to the perception that some franchises are losing games on purpose in an attempt to win a higher draft pick. While researchers have concluded tanking does exist in the NBA, this is the first paper to analyze the strategy’s success in terms of generating increases in future winning percentage or future franchise value. This paper, through panel data regressions controlling for fixed effects for 21 seasons, has found that tanking does have a large impact on future winning percentage. A team that tanks typically sees a significant increase in wins of approximately 9.87 games between the 2nd and 4th year after the team tanked. These results have large implications for the league as the NBA recently began draft reform discussions to reduce the incentive to tank. This paper validates the leagues’ belief that draft reform must occur as tanking can give an unfair advantage in future years.

Do you want me to keep going or do you just want to STFU and realize I've been around these parts for a long time and have been known to be a credible poster that you could hopefully trust?

Huh? the most recent NBA champ tanked for several seasons (6th pick, 2nd pick, 2nd pick), hell they even punted on LeBron's first season there which is how they got the 4th pick which improved their draft package.

I just think it's the front offices job to look beyond the landscape of the NBA when they are trying to build a successful program. Everyone knew how strong this draft was. The draft is the pipeline from which the talent flows into teams. If this draft didn't come up in their meetings they're not doing their job well. The team was closer to being a tank team than it was to winning a championship. A pigeon could figure that out. It's the NBA also.. one player could have an extreme effect on a franchise. We've known how the NBA works. Super teams have changed that a little bit but they don't always win championships. You know what does? Sucking a lot and then getting lucky. To get lucky you have to suck... unfortunately for fans.

the 2 best players the Knicks have drafted are RJ and KP, both top 5 picks

this was the year to tank and I really hope it doesn't come back to bite them that they didn't. my fear is that the teams below the Knicks (Bulls, Magic, Raptors, Wizards) will land top 5 picks and then pass the Knicks, leaving them back in the lotto and thus prolonging the rebuild

Thank you for bringing an aspect I didn't bring up. The value of a high draft pick in a trade.

I subscribe to that logic as well. Not only is the team going to miss out on one of these 5 prospects but 5 teams aren't and could possibly be better than you the very next season.

Also.. this team has a history of not drafting well with picks outside the top 5.. get a higher pick to decrease the percentage the team strikes out again.

People rather have Fizdale it seems. Cause that’s the only way we would’ve sucked horribly. And there seems to be some narrative that tanking is guaranteed to work no matter what. Yet Orlando and Minnesota been tanking for years and they still sorry. Toronto didn’t tank and won a championship. Miami didn’t tank and went to the finals last year. Brooklyn, who’s most likely going to win it all didn’t tank. Tanking ain’t the only way to get better.

Exactly numerous teams never tanked yet are contenders. To add to your list the Nuggets, Jazz, Clippers, Hell even the Bucks lucked into Greek at 15. You don’t have to bottom out to get good. Just make good draft choices and smart trades and FA signings. The Knicks already spent their time in the lottery.. ended up with a nice piece in RJ.. a few duds who can maybe develop into solid role players down the road tho. We have another guy who was a lottery pick from lakers failed tanks whose turning out to be really nice player in Randle.. found a couple a late gems with Mitch and IQ. Just keep building on what we have and draft well no matter where we fall and keep competing. Constantly being on the bottom of the standings is not a good thing

Pretty much. Tanking isn’t the only way to improve your team.

If the Knicks kept Fizdale, RJ would be one of the worst players in the league like he was last year, Randle would’ve been traded away for Batum. But we would have a top 5 pick. So people need to watch what they’re wishing for.

I’ve also seen some narrative that we could’ve tanked with Kenny Atkinson over Thibs. I guess they are ignoring how he got the Nets with a sorry roster into the playoffs as well. So really the only way we could’ve been a tanking team is if we had Fizdale, along with the consequences I just listed above. No thanks.

Oh and I doubt we could’ve kept Fizdale for another year and then hired Thibs. I’ve been seeing that narrative floating around. Thibs most likely would’ve gotten hired by the Hawks or Indiana since they wanna win now.

I wonder how high the Knicks can move up if they have 2 first round picks in the teens and a high 2nd round pick (31st?) in a supposedly deep draft. Thibs is not gonna play all 3 rookies so the Knicks might have to consolidate all those picks into 1 or trade it in a package for a superstar.

Would a team give up a top 5 pick for essentially 3 first rounders? I wonder what the price would be.
