No offense to Kobe, but his comp today is higher usage Jimmy Butler. Great competitor with a below average 3 point shot. He relied on the mid range way too much for todays era. Rays game would be boosted by his stroke and ability to get to the rim. He was also an underrated passer & defender. Hate all you want, but you know deep down there is some truth to this.

More like a much faster/more agile/creative Kawhi who was also a way better passer. He'd also shoot like 35% from three anyway and take a lot of those.

Kobe only shot above 35% from 3 in 3 out of his 20 seasons. You add extra volume to that and the percentages drop. Kawhi's efficiency numbers and defense are both vastly superior to Kobe's also. What Kawhi did in Toronto surpasses any championship run that Kobe ever made because his 2nd & 3rd best guys were Spicy P & Lowry who have been completely exposed this year. Kobe's worst 2nd & 3rd during a run were HOF bound Gasol & Odom, plus he had pre knee injury Bynum.

Kobe doesn't need to be a great three point shooter. He can hit 33% on 6 or so attempts a game and get to the free throw line for 8 attempts a game. Also this idea that Kobe is a Jimmy Butler-level three point shooter is wild. At one point he had the record for threes in a game. He scored 81 points and once he scored 50 or more points in 5 straight games. Jimmy Butler as is is a top 12 player, a better version is a top 5 player. I think it's clear in retrospect that Kawhi's run was far from a carry job. Siakam was an all-star and Lowry was still a top 20ish player. Kobe dominated western conference teams in the playoffs between 2008 and 2010. He won two chips as the best player and was dominant in runs with Shaq too. Kobe is better than Kawhi Leonard.

Beal is better than Ray Allen at everything except 3-point shooting.
This guy is going on suspension right

I expected this thread to be fool with foolish takes since most don’t even know what Allen looked like pre Boston hilarious

Ray's career high was 26. He wouldn't magically add 9 more points to that in an era where the ORTG is only 5 points higher (107 to 112).
Beal wasn't the shooter Ray was, but he's much more potent attacking off the dribble than Ray. I'd say Ray peaks at around 28-29 ppg in 2021.

Re: What Would Peak Ray Allen's Stats Look Like Today?
I don't see much of a reason Allen would be a noticeably different player today. His three point attempts would be higher, but other than that he'd be the same. He was never much of a playmaker and a lot of his game would just lead to switches in the modern league.

Prime Kobe's TS% was pretty much 3-4% above the league average. Also you can make the easy case that Kobe could see a boost to his efficiency playing in such a wide open offense that most teams have nowadays.
Prime Kobe would be a 30/7/7 guy on 60-61 TS% kind of player with really good defense. And that is a pretty conservative estimate when you look at his numbers.
There is no way to try and make the argument Ray Allen would be a better player in today's game than Kobe.

Kobes on court performance has been massively overrated because of where he played and his overall off court fame & celebrity whereas Allen’s has been massively underrated due to playing in small markets in his prime. They are a lot closer than people make them out to be.

Putting Ray in the same sentence as Kobe is laughable.
Ray would less valuable today than he was when he played. Everybody can shoot nowadays, it’s not a coveted skill. Team’s don’t value pure shooters more today, they value them less. Your logic is backwards.
The skill that is valued today is playmaking. Look at Doncic and Jokic. I bet Toni Kukoc would be more valuable than Ray in today’s league.

Kobe would shoot better 3's in todays defenseless NBA. Players of Kobes ilk were the reason defenses changed and offenses countered with todays game. Its well documented if you look at Strongside overloads in the pre-space n pace era.

Dude you never watched a single game of prime Allen if you think he was just a pure shooter.

If guys steph and dame are at 29 rn, 27-28 seems reasonable for prime ray. Ppl are tripping if they think he'd avg 10 more than his career best lol.

Isn’t it interesting that, regardless of the current era, there’s always a ton of past stars who would be Gods in fast forward?
Several people in this thread are convinced Ray Allen would be a 30ppg scorer today.

We're talking about 28 year old Ray Allen in today's game and I want to win one game right now?
I'd take him over Giannis, Harden, Curry, Luka, Embiid, AD, and Dame. His game couldn't be made any better for this era, because he was a complete 3 level scorer who outruns everybody on the court.
For a whole year maybe it would be less arguable, I just see Ray being really, really ridiculously good in this day and age.

ray has more size, length athleticism, clutch, defense, shooting using off ball screens, spotting up. Beal is just better in the midrange and playmaking, probably finishing too. He is a better player overall than beal, but I would expect 27, 4, 5 52% on 2s and maybe 41-42% on threes considering he would have russ there with him on washington.

He would be easily. He averaged 26 at 31 in 2008.
You want to modify those numbers to account for the increase in scoring across the League?

The number of people who have averaged 25/26 versus 30 is an enormous gap for a reason.
You’re throwing the term “easily” around pretty nonchalantly.
