Lesson is not to broadcast live something that any reasonable would know could get them fired from their company when they are literally a public figure working on live television for a diverse audience (that includes teenagers/children).

Pierce could live authentically all he wanted. He's allowed to do drugs and have strippers, nobody is saying he shouldn't. But to post himself doing drugs and being around strippers on his live feed is incredibly stupid.

It's not about "playing the game" it's about using common sense.

FYI, lot of companies have social media policies now. Play it safe.

It's a difficult situation, no matter how you look at it.

For a normal person, it might not warrant a firing but it is not a good look.

For something as public as television, it's understandable why he was fired.

They are a corporate entity with an established reputation and this reputation works hand in hand with why certain companies decide to advertise with them.

Pierce represents the company publicly and they use his name in order to generate ratings and attract partnerships. I think it's obvious the optics did not align and his name lost its pull as a result of the videos.

Is that really your takeaway from this?

Paul Pierce decided to get high.
Paul Pierce decided to get drunk.
Paul Pierce decided to hire rippers.
Paul Pierce decided to post it on social media.

The lesson is actions have consequences.

You can live as "authentically" as you want but don't put it out there for public consumption if you aren't willing to accept the consequences.

Yep. Your public actions have consequences. The Company was fully in their rights to let him go if that did not fit with the image they want to portray. You don't need to do something illegal to do something embarrassing. And if you are not elite at your job or not that hard to replace, the more likely you will be let go in these situations. And Paul Pierce is nowhere near elite or irreplaceable for ESPN. Easy choice to let him go.

I guess the next issue is whether this will be considered as a termination with cause or without, and what benefits Paul Pierce will get, or not get, on his dismissal. But even if there is no "cause" from a legal standpoint, you shouldn't be surprised to get called out by your company if you act like a complete jackass in public. They will just need to pay a bit more to move on from you.

Just curious, how many of us would lose their jobs if they did the crap Pierce did, and your employer found out? I would lose mine.

Also, disdain for free speech can = i can do whatever i want with zero repercussions. There are low level employees being terminated right now for semi-lewd or "inappropriate" facebook posts.

I’m a public servant that that is held to legislation that specifically states I can’t do this or I will be fired.

No one should have social media. It does nothing but cause harm. If you're famous and care to market yourself, go hire someone to use your account to post lol.

Theres a real world people live in and a fake world that we have to show society. It's not shocking for Pierce to get fired over this with how things work. Obviously none of us say or do the things we get so outraged for lol. It is what it is.

I would absolutely lose mine. People really trying to overcomplicate things with "play the game" comments are just misguided.

Actions have consequences. Maybe don't stream yourself doing drugs with hired strippers, IDK IT MIGHT END UP BADLY FOR YOU.

I think most people get upset at the fake outrage crowd who gets offended by anything done. Agreed that he screwed up here but let the company worry about this. I just don't need to see a large crowd of people acting like he committed murder or something lol.

Where is the large crowd acting like he committed murder or something?

Just a friendly reminder for those randomly making accusations against the soft left/liberals/woke/wokeism is that conservatives not only initiated, but also embraced cancel culture long ago.

I think most of them are just repeating conservative propaganda. The spin is always to make them the victim. A canonical example in social science is the 'War on Christmas'. Or using the term censorship incorrectly. My absolute favorite is reminding actual bigots that hate speech isn't covered by free speech in Canada. (Which is not relevant to PP and this story but makes me proud to be a Canadian)
