Aaron Holiday on fire last couple of games. By playing well enough to stay on the court he's cutting into others minutes. That's a good thing producing another viable option off the bench.

It's early but so far a lot of games going our way.
Agree on Aaron. Sumner and TJ also balling. If Warren were healthy, it'd really be hard to find minutes for everyone.

Goga's playing well as well. Got into early foul trouble this game, but he's turned into an effective backup big

Even when his first half wasn’t going well, he was still viciously attacking for rebounds. He kind of seems like the most physical and fierce guy we have at times.

Very true
If he continues growing at this rate, he may very well become a starter level C by some time next season, if he isn't already
I wonder which is a better pairing, Myles-Goga, or Goga-Domas

I thought we were making up a game on 3 teams but Knicks, Celts, and Hawks all had late game comebacks. Two went OT.

Goga/Domas would seem like a better pairing at first glance.Topofthekey wrote:Scoot McGroot wrote:Topofthekey wrote:Goga's playing well as well. Got into early foul trouble this game, but he's turned into an effective backup big

Yes, Goga can basically replicate Myles' rim protection and 3 point shooting, and slot in beside Domas
But then if they pair Myles with Goga, they get not one but TWO rim protecting, 3 point shooting bigs
Might be overkill to the point of being redundant, though

I'm glad this team can still at least take care of the Orlando Magic after they just auctioned off three core pieces at the trade deadline.
Letting them crawl back a few times was not awesome, but the game from Aaron Holiday was.

Lost in the shuffle a bit is Aaron is averaging 15 points a game over the last 5 on 58/65/82 shooting splits, while averaging 3 3pointers made a night. If Justin returns to the bench next year at the 3, and with Goga at the 5, I think a McConnell/Holiday combo would do great off the bench. I still think we’d need to possibly move Lamb for a 4, as I don’t think we could cover for a McConnell/Holiday/Lamb at the 1 thru 3 spots.

I like Aaron. He has good awareness of where things are/need to be on court. Unlike say Lamb, who can sometimes fall asleep defensively, and TJ and Brogdon who sometimes doggedly chase their man from behind instead of rotating

Agreed. He’s physically limited, but he’s a good defender. Otherwise, the thing that Aaron could provide is that his long-range shooting isn’t just from the arc, but well beyond the arc. If he can keep hitting shots like that at 40%ish, that could do wonders for the long haul of helping to spread the court better by pulling guys past the arc.

How does Sumner fit into that rotation? If we draft a backup 4 to play alongside Goga, I can't find minutes for all our wings.Scoot McGroot wrote:Lost in the shuffle a bit is Aaron is averaging 15 points a game over the last 5 on 58/65/82 shooting splits, while averaging 3 3pointers made a night. We’ll see, but hell, play Justin at the 4 and run TJ/Aaron/Sumner at 1-3 and let them just sprint for 15 minutes a night together, and grab other minutes here and there. Even Goga can run with them. But otherwise, competition is great, and injuries always happen, that I don’t worry about minutes or projections.
The other tough thing is that I don’t think it’ll be easy to keep McConnell next year. I could see a lot of competitors offering a full MLE next season.

One of the reasons why it is unlikely the team re-signs TJ and Doug
Myles / Goga
Domas / Lamb
Warren / Justin
LeVert / Sumner
Brogdon / Aaron
They'll most likely try to trade Lamb for a proper backup PF and call it a day
Unless they can find a good consolidation trade, there just isn't enough playing time available for everyone
And this is not yet factoring in their FRP, who's most likely going to end up rotting on the bench until something happens

I'd hope we can trade lamb to a team with cap space so our FRP is the backup 4 and we can resign the Mc's.

Yes, they could try that also. But then as you mentioned, there just won't be enough playing time for everyone
Myles / Goga

LeVert / Justin / Sumner
Brogdon / TJ / Aaron
I'd hate to relegate Sumner and Aaron to cold storage, considering the progress they've made, especially Sumner
It's time for Sumner and Aaron to be part of the regular rotation, the 3rd string backup role should be reserved for raw players like Stanley
It looks like KP might have made a mistake or two in assembling the roster, the roster looks quite clunky
Too many wings and guards, and three players whose best position is C (though Domas arguably is fine as a PF, at least offensively, defensively it's another story)

My roster building theory says you need 3 guys who can play the point and 3 who can defend the post. I agree we have too many 2/3s but I disagree that we should have fewer 5s.
We lack true 4s. We have used some 2/3s as 2/3/4s but Jakarr is probably the only player out of 17 whose best position is 4. Maybe Oshae but I haven't seen enough of him to judge.
I hope the draft gives us a 4. If not we'll probably have to make a trade as it'll be hard to sign a decent free agent 4 and stay out of tax land.
