And I'm too lazy to google this, but can someone explain GTJ's contract situation? Is it up at the end of the year? And if so, will he be a RFA?
Yes, his contract is up and he is an RFA. The max we can sign him to is 25% of the cap. Let's hope for a OG type of deal at this stage.
Trent has been such a fun guy to watch as he just brings positive energy -- of course it goes overboard when he is scoring like that. Same with guys like Yuta and Bembry. Those guys just cut and make some smart hustle plays. Gillespie seems in that mold, but he is a rock solid bruiser in the post and on the high screens. I hope my name for him sticks: Sheddie Freddie.
The reason I mention positivity is that despite an odd year with everything against Toronto, this is a really good ending with some hope. Even Malachi looks like he is finally settling in and playing well.
I have no idea what becomes of this team when Kyle, FVV, Siakam and Birch are all playing, but we now know there is depth. Hopefully waiving Baynes comes next.
Can't give him OGs contract or we may as well have kept Norm.
Nah. We've already seen almost as many highs from Trent in his 9 games as a Raptor as we did from Powell before the trade this season. ~18M for a 22-year-old Trent is also much better than +20M for a 28-year-old Powell. Not to mention we'd have moves to make before/after signing Trent to that contract while we'd basically be capped with Norm and one more player for the MLE.
Trent's numbers thus far in Toronto have been very similar to Powell this year with a decrease in efficiency but with less turnovers and better defence too.
Trent: 17.9 PPG (57 TS%), 3.4 REB, 1.7 AST, 0.8 TOV
Powell: 19.2 PPG (63 TS%), 3.1 REB, 1.7 AST 1.8 TOV
I like how Trent hasn't been afraid of the moment. He missed the three late against the Suns in his debut, but he also hit the buzzer-beating shot against the Wizards and carried our offence against the Cavs and Thunder. He just seems to have a very calm demeanor where he's rarely off-balance or rushing a shot, and he's always ready.
