Good evening everyone. How's everything?

As most, if not all, of you probably are aware, last night 6 NBA players recorded triple-doubles:

March 17, 2021 list:

James Harden 40pts 10reb 15ast
Ben Simmons 13pts 10reb 12ast
Domantas Sabonis 18pts 11reb 11ast
Russell Westbrook 26pts 14reb 10ast
Draymond Green 16pts 12reb 10ast
Nikola Jokic 12pts 10ast 10ast

Again, not to nitpick any more than necessary, especially considering I listed the March '73 triple-double, however,
I felt the need to point out that there were only 17 NBA teams at the time, compared to 30 today.

March 18, 1973 list:

Connie Hawkins 11pts 11reb 10ast
Dave Cowens 12pts 13reb 11ast
Herm Gilliam 19pts 10reb 10ast
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 22pts 20reb 10ast
Spencer Haywood 38pts 18reb 10ast
Wilt Chamberlain 16pts 15ast 10ast(15 if you also factor in Wilt thought he was robbed of 4 assists per game as Laker)

To me, and this is not attempting to sound condescending toward last night's accomplishment to any degree whatsoever,
however, as far as I'm concerned, the '73 occurrence is FAR more impressive than last night's occurrence.

When 6 players did it in '73 with 17 NBA teams,
to me it's akin to 11 players accomplishing the same feat today with 30 NBA teams.

A little more historical context here for better reference:

Most people know that in the 61-62 season

In a 9 team league, 7 players averaged 30ppg or higher(if 3pt line is factored in):

Wilt 50.4ppg
Baylor 38.3ppg
Bellamy 31.5ppg
West 32ppg
Oscar 31.9ppg
Pettit 31
Guerin 30.5

As most of you are aware by now, last season 3 players averaged 30 or better:

Harden
Lillard
Beal

Once again, not to be disrespectful of today's players' accomplishments,
however like the '73 triple-double comparison:

what 7 players did on 9 teams in '61-62
is akin to 23 players doing the same with 30 teams in 20-21

Something else just occurred to me that I never previously realized:

To my knowledge, Dippy is the only NBA/ABA player to accomplish the following:

50 point triple-double with blocks &
50 point triple-double with assists

As well as:

50 point triple-double with blocks &
50 point triple-double with assists at least once IN THE SAME SEASON!

We know he did it for certain in the following season:

67-68

Dec. 1, 1967 vs Seattle: 52pts 37reb 17blk(this chat forum)
Dec. 16, 1967 vs Chicago: 68pts 34reb 14blk(this chat forum)
Dec. 20, 1967 at Seattle: 53pts 38reb 19blk(this chat forum, also may have had double-figure assists by today's interpretation & considering Wilt thought the scorekeeper was robbing him of assists the 1st half of this season)
Mar. 18, 1968 vs LA Lakers: 53pts 32reb 18ast(today's assist interpretation)& about a dozen blocks(Phi. Daily News)

I'm also extremely confident he accomplished the same feat in 2 previous seasons:

63-64

Nov. 2, 1963 at LAL: 55pts 29reb, Oakland Tribune "blocking shots time after time"
Jan. 10, 1964 vs LAL: 50pts 23reb, LA Times "blocked a few shots in the 1st half"
Jan. 28, 1964 at Phi. 76ers: 59pts 13reb 11ast(today's criteria)AP "blocked numerous shots in 4th qtr"
Mar. 14, 1964 at LAL: 55pts 14reb 10ast(today's criteria) Sorry don't have block total yet

There were a few other 50pt games from Wilt this season, but I haven't located a block total from any of these games yet.

62-63

Jan. 5, 1963 at Chi: 50 pts 25reb 15blk(Chicago Sun-Times)
Jan. 29, 1963 at NYK: 62pts 12reb, Jersey Journal "blocked numerous shots"
Feb. 13, 1963 vs Det(OT): 51pts 29reb 14ast(today's criteria) Don't have blocks yet, but I'm certain it was at least 10, maybe 15.
Feb. 16, 1963 at LAL(2OT): 56pts 21reb, LA Times Feb. 18th "blocking shots from all angles"

There were obviously other 50 & 60pt Wilt games from this season, but I haven't located blocks from any of them yet.
But I wouldn't doubt there are several, if not many more.

Anyways, hope everyone enjoys them.

Good evening everyone. How is everything?

I felt the need to post the following data which I was blessed to recently uncover:

Wilt's blocked shot totals for all his regular season games of 40 rebounds or better:

55 vs Bos Nov 24, 1960: 10 blocks
45 vs Syr Feb 6, 1960: 11 blocks
45 vs LAL Jan 21, 1961: 14 blocks
43 vs NYK Nov 10 1959: 15 blocks
43 vs LAL Dec 8 1961(3ot): 17 blocks
43 vs Bos Mar 6 1965: 16 blocks
42 vs Bos Jan 15 1960: 13 blocks
42 vs Det Jan 25 1960: 8 blocks
42 vs Bos Jan 14 1966: 12 blocks
42 vs Bos Mar 7 1969(ot): 10 blocks
41 vs Det Oct 26 1962(ot): 19 blocks
40 vs Syr Nov 4 1959: 18 blocks
40 vs Det Nov 22 1964: 13 blocks
40 vs Bos Dec 28 1965: 14 blocks

In case anyone's forgotten and/or recognizes me from my work at www.nbastats.net, I overestimated on exactly half these block totals, which I do sincerely apologize for, however, for the other half I may have slightly underestimated on them.

In closing, I hope & pray this makes everybody's day much brighter.

Thanks, it did :-) both figuratively and literally. Just as I opened your thread, the morning sun came out of the clouds and lit up my house.

As an aside, even though I recognize this forum is mainly for shot-blocking, I also felt the need to add the following:

NBA, Most actual defensive rebounds, game:

39: Wilt Chamberlain - November 24, 1960(16 or 17 offensive rebounds)
Bill Russell - March 11, 1965(10 offensive rebounds)

Well, folks, even though my last post was probably especially unexpected by most(including maybe even myself),
I'm exceptionally convinced this one will contain something even more unprecedented:

March 2, 1967 - Phi. 76ers vs SFW

Wilt Chamberlain - 24pts 38reb 16ast(today's criteria)27blk

Pretty astonishing, right?

Well, here's something perhaps even more astounding:

2nd half stats - 13pts 19reb 13ast(today's criteria)15blk

AND for the coup de ville:

4th qtr stats- 7pts 16reb 10ast(today's criteria)15blk

So in summary:

In the 2nd half, by today's assist criteria, Wilt recorded a quadruple-13

In the 4th qtr, by today's assist criteria, Wilt fell just 3 points shy of recording a quadruple-double

In the 4th qtr, by today's assist criteria, Wilt recorded a triple-double without points(16reb 10ast 15blk)

All the above being stated, this might be the only quadruple-13 recorded in 1 half
(although it wouldn't surprise me if he did likewise in the 2nd half of game 5 of the '67 EDF vs Boston)
but definitely not the only quadruple-double by Wilt for a half.

I wouldn't be surprised if he had at least 6, maybe 8 or 9, if today's assist criteria is factored in.

In closing, I hope & pray this not only makes everyone weekend more enjoyable, but also next week somewhat more optimistic.

"In the 4th qtr, by today's assist criteria, Wilt fell 3 points shy of recording a quadruple-double"

(Sorry for this post, but I felt the need to mention it said "7" previously, instead of 3,
which I should've initially posted & have subsequently corrected just now.
I wanted to correct it now before word of the last post leaked out any more than it may already have.)

EXCEPTIONALLY IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR EVERYBODY!

Even by today's assist interpretation, Wilt Chamberlain DID NOT QUITE attain a quadruple-double-double.
However, the following 2 games represent the closest he ever approached achieving one,
or, as far as I'm concerned anyway, anybody else will ever come, as well:

Feb. 7, 1968 vs San Diego: 46min 21pts 21reb 18ast(today's interpretation)21blk(at Boston)
Mar. 18, 1968 vs LA Lakers: 48min 53pts 32reb 18ast(today's interpretation)24blk AND 10 STEALS!

Now, while everyone on this forum will probably be saying and/or thinking "HALLELUJAH! WE FINALLY ASCENDED EVEREST!,"
(Which, by the way, I would absolutely encourage all associated with this endeavor to do as much & as long as they feel necessary)
We also must be aware there are PLENTY of Wilt-haters out there who will espouse something to the extent of
"Jerry & Elgin didn't play" "EXPANSION TEAM! PIECE OF CAKE" etc.

1) True, West & Baylor WERE unavailable for the Mar. 18th game, as most know by now, however, I'm honestly convinced this increased his shot-blocking opportunities immensely, because, if anyone's studied the box score, you'll immediately notice that Imhoff & Mel Counts received more shot opportunities than they ordinarily would've had this season under normal circumstances. Others, such as Tom Hawkins & Ervin Mueller, post players, also had more FGA in this game than normal, providing Dippy with more volleyball opportunities, or at least interior intimidation, as well.

2) For the Feb. 7th game, correct, the opponent was the expansion Rockets, however, they beat Philly once that season when most of the 76ers decided to play hokey(psychologically)for this game, finding themselves down by a large 3rd qtr margin, then making a strong comeback before falling short by 5.

Anyway, back to the Feb. 7th contest: 2 San Diego players who took most of the shots in this game were, not surprisingly, post players: Toby Kimball, and Harvey Finkel. Not necessarily all-star caliber personnel, but not benchwarmers either, then or now.

In closing, I hope & pray this makes not only the remainder of this week, but also the remainder of this month, FAR more tolerable, optimistic, & inspiring.

Now, for those on this post and/or elsewhere who see #230 and reply something to the extent of:

YOU'RE WRONG! YOU'RE FORGETTING THE FEB. 2, 1968 DETROIT GAME!!

Completely understandable, however my response here is that I DID NOT forget.

How is this possible you ask?

Wilt's stats from the Feb. 2nd game:

48min 22pts 25reb 26ast(today's interpretation)16blk

1st half numbers:

11pts 10reb 11ast(old criteria)10blk

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR BLOCKED SHOT UPDATE!
(yes, I understand this forum primarily pertains to Wilt & Russell,
nonetheless, since Kareem obviously learned much about basketball & life
from both these Kings as much, if not more, than almost anyone else,
I still feel the necessity to post this.)

As some of you probably recall in #117, I estimated that in the Feb. 18, 1970 MIL SFW game
that Kareem had 17 or 18 blocked shots, if not more, and was awaiting a legitimate source
for further information, if one ever became available.

Well, as it turns out again, I'm even more prophetic than I previously imagined:

KAREEM BLOCKED 19 SHOTS IN THIS GAME!
(which is also his NBA actual career best)

Now, is this the highest for 1 game in the 69-70 NBA /ABA season?

I don't know for certain yet, but I'd certainly be willing to put some heavy artillery on it,
for a myriad of reasons.

This is of even more significant importance, especially considering Kareem's birthday is also tomorrow.

There were some Lakers year's playoffs study where they found out Wilt averaged close to 10 blocks during the post season run so it is possible.

Another important update:

Now officially confirmed:

NBA players with 20 or more blocks in a game at least once:

Wilt Chamberlain
Bill Russell
Nate Thurmond
Gene Wiley
LeRoy Ellis
Elvin Hayes

In closing, this list is NOT meant to any degree disrespect those who are not on this list, such as:

Kareem, first and foremost,
Swede Halbrook
Elmore Smith
Manute Bol
Walter Dukes
Bob Lanier
Ray Felix
George Mikan
Otto Moore
Zelmo Beaty
Bob Pettit
Walt Bellamy
Craig Raymond
Julius Keye
Mel Daniels

And numerous others who were not fortunate enough to master their crafts in the Russell-Wilt era of NBA basketball.

-4 quadruple doubles during these 136 games.
-WIlt's reconstructive knee surgery took place on 11/9/69. He missed nearly an entire season and could never run or jump nearly the same afterwards.

Note: 56% of these games took place AFTER his knee surgery.

Note: The most TOTAL triple doubles by a center in the era in which blocks have been kept (1974-2021), including playoffs:

-Nikola Jokic: 54
-Kareem: 20

However, at this point, I can tell you this:

By today's assist interpretation, Wilt DID have 5-6 quintuple-doubles in the 63-64 season alone,
as well as 5-7 more as a 76er.

Along with the Mar. 18, 1968 game, here are the two others I have so far:

Feb. 24, 1967 PHI vs BAL(at Pittsburg)

42pts(18-18FGM)30reb 13ast(today's interpretation)13blk 10stl

Mar. 18, 1967 PHI vs BAL(exactly 1 year before the 76er Laker game)

26pts 17reb 19ast(today's interpretation)15blk 11stl
