One day contract for LA

Post#1 » by Norm2953 » Thu Apr 15, 2021 5:52 pm

With LA's sudden retirement from an irregular heartbeat, is there any sentiment for LA signing one of those one
day contracts, so that he can retire once again as a Blazer. One would think Dame would be for all that he's calling
for LA to have his uniform retired.

I don’t think lma accomplished enough here to be retired but if some of those other guys could be i guess he can too. Personally i’d only retire about 5 all time blazers: MO/Walton/Porter/Clyde/dame (when he retires)

As far as the 1 day contract he stabbed us in the back going to SA so my inclination would be no on paper. But ultimately i think i say yes to that since i think it’s better to not be petty and let the past be in the past. Might send a good message to potential fa’s as well if we don’t hold grudges

I'm not so keen about retiring his jersey but a one day contract in my mind is a no brainer for while
his decision to leave in free agency was business but he's in the top 5 in virtually every category in
the Blazer record books. He remains, likely the only Blazer big who had a long, productive NBA
career.

Retire his number? That should be a more rare thing, and the Blazers have retired too many IMHO who shouldn't have been. LMA's is at least more arguable.

There are indeed far too many guys who had their numbers retired for guys like Twardzik, Steele and Neal shouldn't be
up there.

I agree with the sentiment that there is far too many numbers in the rafters...but, I would say yes to letting LA retire a Blazer ... jersey retired or not.

I'm indifferent to retiring his jersey but if Dame pushes for it, I'd be okay with it. He played nine seasons
in Portland and if only he had stayed, his numbers would dominate Portland's team records.

If Lillard finishes his career on another team because Blazers buy him out and waive him, this could be a reason to do a short contract to retire him a Blazer. Aldridge made a choice to benefit himself. BTW, a choice I supported him to make. Signing Aldridge to a contract so he can retire a Blazers is 10x dumber than the dumbest retired jersey hanging in the Moda Center. I bet Aldridge is too sensible to even accept the offer.

4x all-star with Portland
2nd team all-NBA with Portland
2x 3rd team all-NBA with Portland
1st in total rebounds
3rd in points
3rd in field goals made
4th in minutes played
5th in games played
9 seasons with the team

I know some posters still hold a grudge for him leaving in free agency, but Portland really hasn't had that many all-star caliber players, especially ones with as long of a tenure as Aldridge.

If he’d stayed 5 more years he’d have the legacy but feels like an “incomplete” as is. I love lma but i just think he was a step below greatness and that’s what separates guys like him from guys like dame who legitimately deserves to be retired

I do think not offering a one day contract would make the franchise look really small and petty.

LA made a business decision to return home to play for arguably the best coach in the league
alongside a top 5 player in Kawhi. The Spurs could sell LA on his role for anyone could see he
would be playing in Tim Duncan's role in the Spurs offense. Portland was in a transition period
for nobody knows if LA might still have stayed if Wesley Matthews had not gotten hurt in his
walk season. That 2014 Blazers team was perfectly suited to run the Stotts system and had
4 solid NBA defensive players in their starting lineup.

Loyalty goes both ways for think about poor Steve Blake who signed three times with Portland
and was traded three times. Extend the offer for there is no way of knowing if LA will prefer to
retire as a Spur, making the whole thing moot.

To dame asking to retire lma even if we do that usually these things take a few years unless a player is really good ie lebron or kobe. I think Dame will get an immediate retire when he hangs it up, as for LMA even if he is retired i think it won’t be immediately

I dont know that the Blazers could sign LMA if they wanted to. He's a Brooklyn Nets player. I would think the Nets would need to waive him in order for the Blazers to sign him.

Having said that, I am not a fan whatsoever of retiring anyone's number. I dont mind putting names in the rafters, but leave the numbers alone.

The time for a one day contract would be after the season ended.

No.

He can go spend time with his family.

It's very possible I missed it, but has Aldridge indicated any interest in retiring as a Blazer?

There is a chance LA could get some consideration (eventually) for the Hall of Fame. Offering him a one day
contract is a small matter that could make him the first Blazer to get into the HOF since Clyde and Bill Walton
went in as a Rocket and Celtic.
