Nikola Jokic Considered Heavy Favorite To Win MVP In Latest Straw Poll

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Apr 15, 2021 5:28 pm

Nikola Jokic has emerged as the clear frontrunner for NBA MVP during the 20-21 season, according to a new straw poll from ESPN.

Jokic took 90 of the 101 first-place votes cast in ESPN's latest MVP straw poll, conducted this past weekend.

A center hasn't won the award since Shaquille O'Neal in 2000.

Jokic is averaging career highs of 26.0 points, 10.9 rebounds and 8.8 assists while also shooting career bests from 3-point range (41.8%) and the free throw line (85.3%).

If Denver finishes fifth or sixth in the West, Jokic shouldn’t be MVP. Period. Westbrook’s precedent doesn’t apply as Jokic is not averaging a triple double, and triple doubles have been slightly devalued since they have become more commonplace.

Current MVP candidates :
----------------------------------

1 - CP3 ( incredible turnaround of the Suns after he stepped in the lineup )
2 - Donovan Mitchell ( #1 team all year round - leading the team to elite level in just his 4th season )
3 - Jokic ( Arguably greatest passing center in NBA history -- putting up a near triple double )
4 - Damian Lillard ( carried injury riddled team all season to a potential 6th seed )

Honorable mentions :
----------------------------------

* Lebron ( probably would be leading the pack had he not gotten hurt )
* Julius Randall ( playing career best - leading the Knicks to their first season playoff birth since 2013 )

Mentioning Dame and not Luka seems silly since their only separated by a game. The Mavs had some of the worst luck in the league this year

Is a straw poll where longest straw gets first choice?
