Re: Future Free Agent Thread, Part 2
Marc Gasol was just complaining about how the Lakers are using him. There may be some small chance that Gasol gets bought out.
The Lakers brought in Drummond and immediately handed Drummond the starting job, though Drummond only lasted 14 mins before he hurt his toe. The Lakers have five guys that play Center: AD, Gasol, Harrell, Drummond and Damian Jones. Gasol is probably rightly sensing that Drummond, AD and Harrell will get the Center minutes when everyone is healthy.
Considering our rotation is pretty much set, I am not sure how the Jazz could guarantee Gasol any more minutes than the Lakers, but I think Conley would get more out of him on offense than the Lakers have. Gasol's defense in the paint is still pretty good. He might be able to play alongside Favors with Gasol playing paint protector on defense and Gasol playing stretch four on offense, but I don't know whose minutes you would cut. Niang maybe?
Even if Gasol doesn't get bought out now, I could see see him asking for a buyout in the offseason if he ends up being odd man out in the playoffs --- considering sitting on the bench isn't what he signed up for. Not sure the Jazz or any team would guarantee 36 year old Gasol a regular rotation role for the 21/22 season, but he might be interested in reuniting with Conley for one last run.
We've still got young Azubuike that might develop in to a good third option big man.

All decent points. My rebuttal would simply be ... why would the Lakers buy him out? They don't need the roster spot and there's no financial reason for them. Buying him out simply allows him to go help another team (like the Jazz) who they are competing with.
With that said, I'd hope the Jazz/Conley would at least reach out if he were bought out. Can't have too much depth, and the team is 1 back tweak or knee twist from being screwed at the center spot (Ily then becomes the #2 center, which would be ugly for defensive reasons).

Justin Jackson bought out. Young, athletic, long forward. I'll be honest, I have no clue how his D is and his outside shot is only mediocre, but anytime I see a rotation player with his measure-ables, my ears perk up.

The thought was that if Gasol was really unhappy about Drummond being brought in and potentially being relegated to the bench, that he might ask to be bought out, and the Lakers might accommodate him for the reason of the recent trend of organizations showing players around the league that they are respectful and mindful of former stars' wishes for ongoing opportunities.
However, Gasol was just asked to clarify the comments where he said he was frustrated about his role, and Gasol answered that he was fully committed to the team regardless of minutes. Maybe that could change in the off season; but I see now that Drummond is only signed for the remainder of this season. Also, the last few games, the Lakers started running more plays through Gasol, and he's responded with assists, points and rebounds.

Why didn’t we go after Jabari, we need scoring.

Just read Gasol broke his finger. Not sure time table before playing again?Crunch 99 wrote:zero24gravity wrote:Crunch 99 wrote:Spoiler:

I’d take him, good shooter and decent defender if I’m thinking correctly.

I’d definitely put him in over Niang.

Niang shoots the 3 so well though...... If he could only do anything else he'd be a useful player......

Yes please. Would love him as a third string center. Don't think he could play in the playoffs though.

I’ll take a 36% 3 pt shooter who can play D and is athletic over Niang any day.

Re: Future Free Agent Thread, Part 2
I believe that this summer a bunch of NBA teams are going to be taking a look at Shavon Shields. He's Will Shields' son for those of you that follow the NFL (I don't but I'm pretty sure that name rings a bell). He played college ball at Nebraska, went undrafted in 2016 and has since built himself an excellent career overseas, playing very well in high-level, successful clubs. He's now 27 and in his prime.
He's a big wing, roughly Royce-sized (maybe a bit taller) with a strong frame, but he plays nothing like O'Neale as he's a smooth and skilled offensive player with good scoring instincts and bball IQ. Once was a shaky jumpshooter but has made massive strides in that regard and should now be more than able to knock down open shots in the NBA. Fluid athlete although he's only about average-to-above-average NBA-wise, not a defensive specialist but should not be a liability either.
He used to suffer a bit from the "decent at everything, exceptional at nothing" disease that keeps plenty of talented players out of the NBA, but IMO he's improved enough that his overall skillset could allow him to become a successful rotation player if he can make the switch from being a featured player in the Euroleague to a role player in the NBA - which I think he could do as he's already playing in a very deep Euroleague team in Milan under Ettore Messina, he's not simply chucking it away as the main guy in a bad team.
Not 100% sure what his contract situation is like - I think he's under contract for another season but usually those deals have an NBA out clause. Nevertheless, it's going to take a decent offer to get him but I think he'd be a pretty good fit with the Jazz.

Nuggets Sign Austin Rivers to 10-day Contract

Austin Rivers has had a lot of good games playing against the Jazz, including averaging 24 ppg on 14 FGA over two games this season while playing for the Knicks.

He can't, but even if we sign him and it means that some guys can get some rest in the leadup to the playoffs it would be worth it. I also think we have a roster spot to sign him, so ... do it? He could learn a lot from Ersan, as well.

Alize Johnson, Brooklyn's recent G- League pickup, had 20 points on 12 attempts AND 21 rebs, including 4 orebs, in a Brooklyn win over the Pacers last night.
It's frustrating that out of all the teams in the league, including the Jazz, that could have used that rare pickup from the G-League who can step in, play and make a positive impact from time to time, that it was the most loaded team in the NBA, the Brooklyn Nets, that pulled it off.
