I know you're joking, but I actually think Kornet could really be a key player this game.
Time Lord is out. Bulls have Vucevic at 6'11" at center so I don't see us playing Parker or Grant much at all as a small ball 5.
I see lots of mins for Thompson and Kornet. Thing is, Vucevic spends a lot of time on the perimeter and shoots lots of 3's.
Thompson has struggled to cover opposing bigs out on the perimeter (Towns, Gasol, etc.) cause he's too slow. TT has been good since he returned for us, but there's 2 things he simply can't do - defend out on the perimeter and shoot from the perimeter. Kornet is quicker and better at defending the perimeter than TT. Kornet matches up well defensively against Vucevic, not only because Kornet has the quickness to defend out on the perimeter (at least better than TT) but Kornet at 7'2 also has the size to defend and rebound against Vucevic when Vucevic goes inside.
I want to see lots of Kornet this game, at least 15..maybe even 20+ mins. Put Kornet on Vucevic when he's out there.
Looks like Time Lord and Fournier have been ruled out and Brown, Tatum and Kemba are all on injury report as either questionable or probably. So knock on wood, hopefully everyone else plays except Time Lord and Fournier. If Walker/Brown/Tatum all play, I can see us blowing the Bulls out and then that way, our starters can rest up in the 4th quarter. Then hopefully we have a full team for the first time with EVERYBODY healthy and ready to play on Thursday..
The boldface is just wrong. Thompson is the best perimeter-defending big on this team outside of Grant and frankly one of the better perimeter defending bigs in the league. It's his biggest strength outside of rebounding.
Gasol got those open threes the other night because we were icing screen and rolls to the sideline and the guard was making no effort to contain their man. Thompson has to contain the ballhandler in time for the guard to recover before he can get out to the perimeter. Our problem is we were icing pick-and-rolls before Gasol even decided he was going to set a pick. That and there was no weakside rotation to contain Gasol (not that there should be). Take a look for yourself.
Towns made one three in a Thompson pick and roll because Thompson called switch and Smart stayed with his man. Thompson's real weakness on defense is protecting the rim. Stevens or Ainge would tell you he's great on the perimeter.
What I see when I watch the games is Thompson and Tacko staying home in the paint even when the opposing big floats out to the perimeter, whereas Time Lord and Kornet actually get out there and defend opposing bigs when they float out to the perimeter.
In the Gasol video you posted:
:19 wide open shot by Gasol from just inside the foul line, Thompson nowhere near him
:30 Gasol with a wide open 3. Thompson defending Gasol on the play but not anywhere near close enough to disrupt the shot in any way
1:01 Gasol at top of key with the ball, Thompson stays home inside, giving Gasol way too much space to comfortably get the shot off (even though Gasol is not a threat to put the ball on the floor and drive)
1:09 Same thing again..Gasol at top of key with the ball, Thompson stays home inside, giving Gasol way too much space to comfortably get the shot off
1:30 TT too slow closing out on Gasol, Gasol has tons of space as he catches the ball on the perimeter, left wide open for another 3
I've gotta admit, though. I'm impressed. You sound like you have some crazy insider info. You somehow heard Thompson call for a switch on that play vs Minnesota (maybe you were there in the front row?) and you actively speak with both Ainge and Stevens to know specifically what they think about TT's perimeter defense (unless you saw some interviews but chose not to link them here for some reason?)
Also, Time Lord defends Towns very closely out on the perimeter at the 3:45 mark of this video, and also at the 3:21 mark of that vid the C's had some confusion defending that screen, which left Towns open from top of the key, but still Time Lord was able to at least get close enough to Towns as he released the shot to disrupt it a little bit, he closed out on the shot quicker than what we saw from TT when defending Gasol in those clips from the Lakers game.
You see it one way, and I see it another. We can have different opinions. It doesn't mean one of us is wrong.
Also, at the :28 mark of this video, Gasol has the ball top of the key but Kornet closes out on him better and defends him closer so Gasol doesn't even think about shooting it:
