I love this often repeated line that McHale gifted us KG. It's just so silly one 2 levels. 1- it's wrong. Minny got the best offer they could get. and 2- Even if it were true, why would it be a bad thing? So the logic here is Ainge has such good friends around the NBA that people will try to help him and you don't like him because of that?

This narrative was always built on hindsight. It's pretty easy to look back after everything has already played out and see that the Celtics benefited from that trade much more than the Wolves, although at the time nobody knew how long KG would be good and Jefferson was on an all star trajectory that was hampered by injuries and it wasn't built into the trade that the Wolves would squander the draft picks.

Imagine if the Wolves had drafted Steph Curry with that pick the Celtics sent back.
Either they would have won that trade with ease or they would have just ruined Curry's career and he would have retired to ankle injury at 25. Instead they took Jonny Flynn and Ricky Rubio.
Also, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Al Jefferson is a pretty nice package of young players. Much better than what the Rockets just got for a player of similar caliber.

Agreed.
It really was a win-win trade. Minnesota was a team in rebuilding mode. So it made sense for them to get younger. They traded away a 31 year old star PF for a 22 year old PF on the verge of stardom. Makes no sense to be. doing this rebuild around a 31 year old guy who's been in the league for over a decade. KG wanted out of Minnesota. He had been there for over a decade, his best shot at a ring was 2004, they had a good team that year but just couldn't win it all. It makes sense that he wants to leave and go somewhere else to try and win a ring while he still has 2-3 years left of prime in him - obviously Minnesota wouldn't be competing for a ring within 2-3 years. Jefferson was really starting to blow up and was breaking out as one of the better young players in the league at the time. Since they play the same position it makes it smooth to just remove 1 guy and slide the new guy in his place.
Short term obviously KG is better but if you think about it long term, let's say you assume both players have until age 33 before they really start declining. That means the Celtics only get 2 more prime years of KG but Minnesota gets 11 more prime years with Jefferson (Al was 22 at the time of the trade, KG was 31)..so obviously KG is better but is 2 years of KG better than 11 years of Jefferson? Maybe, maybe not..
To get a player with the talent, size of Jefferson and at such a young age, I think Minnesota did pretty good considering KG wanted out to so they had to try and trade him.
Did Ainge/Mchale being former teammates on multiple championship teams make it more likely that Mchale trades KG to Boston instead of trading him somewhere else? Maybe. It's not easy to get a blockbuster deal done, lots of moving parts, but maybe it is easier to get done with your buddy. But, I doubt, other teams interested in trading for KG weren't offering a player as big/talented/young as Jefferson..
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

I agree this had the makings of a win win trade and Minnesota would have made out well if they hadn't squandeted the draft picks, but as I remember it a major sticking point that made it hard for Minnesota to move KG is that he *didn't* want to be traded and actually preferred to stay in Minny, and most teams weren't willing to give much up in part because it was a struggle to get him to commit to staying with potential trade destinations long term.

He can't do anything right in some people's minds. Yikes.
Thought it was cool to have the GM doing commentary. I get he is probably really going to watch what he says, but it was still cool. I'm trying to remember if this has happened before. For our team or other teams. Have any other GMs done commentary for their team for a game?

I remember Dan Duquette stopping by the booth to join the broadcast of a couple innings on a Red Sox game back in the day..
Ainge was a good sport about it, and he agreed to it. But obviously he was uncomfortable. It's not how he would ideally be watching his team play, with a microphone in his face for the whole game being prompted by Scal to give his thoughts on ever damn play. I'm sure he'd rather watch his team from up in his private box where he can relax and watch the game in peace, alone with his thoughts and better process what is happening on the court..
You could tell from the way he commentated though, he likes Pritchard. He seems to be a fan of Pritchard, he wants him shooting the ball. The other thing I picked up on was he seemed more concerned with how the team was playing on defense compared to offense. He wants his team playing better defense, which might explain why Grant gets so many mins even though many people want him off the team, lol. Even on the broadcast, Danny showed disappointment in Grant on a particular play on offense, but on the other end he applauded the defense that Grant played..

It must have been his idea or at least an idea he wanted to do right? I'm kind of wondering why he wanted to do it.
Mostly unrelated, but I only get the local broadcasts sometimes as I DL the games but whats the deal with Mike Gorman not being on so much? I hope he is alright and not going to retire soon.

Mike's 75 and a lot has changed with the broadcast in the last few years, I don't want him to ever retire either as I think he's the absolute best in the business but I'm pretty sure it's coming. This is really the first year you can hear the age in his voice, the enthusiasm he had broadcasting with Tommy all those years just isn't the same. He just doesn't have the same chemistry with Scal and who can blame him after decades of being part of an iconic broadcasting pair? Give the man as many rest days as he needs, at least we won't get the Spurs treatment from the league for that.

Gorman is 75 years old. his friend and partner for over 30 years just passed away. And he's been missing in action for awhile now. I'm guessing he is going to retire. Whether he returns to the air this season and then finishes out the season and then calls it quits or if he is simply all done right now remains to be seen. But I'd be surprised if he comes back next season. Then again, there is quite a few announcers who have kept going deep into their 70s or even 80s..just depends on his health and motivation to keep doing it.
He's had a great career, though. I think all Celtics fans love Mike Gorman. Great announcer, great voice, very knowledgeable about the game, isn't too much of a homer, he's enthusiastic when calling games without being way over the top, always smiling, laughing when interacting with other announcers/coaches/players, seems to get along great with everyone. And been doing it a long time, with the same team..

After Tommy died I had an errie feeling Mike would die a day or two later. Like those stories you hear about couples who have been married for 100 years a die a day apart in Ben Folds songs.
I did like the Ainge and Scal broadcast but it would have been so much better if it was Ainge with Mike. Scal was 10 years old when Danny last played for Boston. Mike started calling the games Ainge's rookie year I think.

Scal can't help himself. He's just obnoxious. Always has to try to show his knowledge in an unappealing way with the studio team, but it is cringeworthy when he gets his elementary lecture tone going when "explaining" things to Mike. Mike's got a life outside of basketball and it wouldn't surprise me either if he bailed from his half of the new team.

My parents died about 36 hours apart, in separate facilities, neither alert enough to be aware that the other one was gone.
