Griffin has to have a roster that makes sense by the trade deadline of next year, and they need to be on their way towards a playoff team.
If not I think Griffin gets shown the door. They can't mess around forever. Next year is a bit of a make or break year.
Yep. It sounds crazy as next season will only be Zion's 3rd in the league but they took a big step back this year. It's go time esp for these mid markets as soon as they uncover a star. There's really no time for many lost seasons or the star player, Zion in this case, will be demanding a trade before the end of his 2nd contract. That scenario has played out over and over the past few years (CP3, Melo, PG, Kawhi, Kyrie, AD, Butler, Harden).
If Griffin can't get them on the right track in the next year then he should probably be replaced.
The real mistake was last year, when they started Zion's tenure by trading down to free up cap space and the loaded up with short-term expensive bets like JJ and Favors. I just don't understand why they didn't stay at #4, take their lumps in year one - ideally trading Jrue then as well - add another lotto pick and
then go looking for pieces that fit once they'd seen Zion (and the #4, Ball, Ingram, etc) in action.
They've made it much harder to sell Zion and their fans on any sense of progress by doing their mini-rebuild in year two instead.
Truth to this for sure.
The Pelicans got so lucky in that span. Like no other organization in such a short period.
1. Gifted Zion at #1
2. Davis as expiring asking out to LA, just so happened Lakers sat with James demanding him and holding #4 and tons of youth.
3. Ingram turned out to be not a bust that he was trending with his lackluster LA production and heart issues.
At the time, my personal fav trade was Holiday + #4 for Ayton. Suns were starving for a defensive guard next to Booker (see Rubio and Paul who have come after). Maybe Pels pull a swap with #11 (assuming Wolves trade happens first) or get some other value out of the deal.
Ayton/Zion pairing would be sick. Hire a shooting coach and watch them both develop shooting like so many bigs do as the develop.
Ayton
Zion
Ingram
