Re: Curry V Magic
Not exactly the same question as which is better, but which player would you rather have in your all time starting 5?
Personally for me it's Curry. In a unit that's likely having both MJ and LeBron handling the ball, I want the best floor spacer and arguably best off-ball player of all time in that unit.
The overall unit would likely look something like:
Curry
Jordan
Bird
LeBron
Hakeem/Kareem/Duncan (seems hard to go wrong here depending on what you need but I suspect you'd prefer an elite defender)
Curry's value in this unit goes up even more given the weak spacing relative to current NBA standards, though I think Jordan ends up a good 3 point shooter in this era and Bird an elite one.

The comparison I like is ....
They both played with "magic" and joy for the game.
I can't think of another player in the last 30 years that played with as much joy as Magic and Curry.
That is why both are loved by the fans (beyond their skillset)

everyone loved Magic when he came into the NBA. He was charasmatic, ushered in a new era of Showtime ball in LA
it was magic
Curry took a few years to get it going and then it has really taken me a good decade to apprecite him. The Warriors went from 'fun' to 'smug' pretty quick and they were more fun to root against - vs cheering for either BOS or the Lakers when Magic was playing.Ducksplatt wrote:Here are some comparisons using numbers and such:

Of note:
Curry is ahead on Scoring
Magic is ahead on Rebounds, Assists, Steals and Blocks.
How about this stat-
Magic 906 games - 1,076 3 point attempts
Curry 750 games - 6,342 3 point attempts
that's insane!
Curry will probaly take over 10,000 3's and be the Best at it - EVER.
We''ll never see a shooter this good, enjoy him while you can.
Yea but what does that have to do with anything? Points are points. No matter how you get them. We are well past hot moments of uber efficiency. It’s become a style. You take enough threes you’ll make enough. This is just volume scoring.

Is Curry even a better point guard than Chris Paul or Steve Nash?
He sure can't run systems like them.
Don get me wrong, Curry is the greatest shooting point guard or greatest guard to ever shoot (PG or SG), but he is not a better point guard than Chris Paul.
You mean is Curry a better passer? No. He wouldn't even crack the top 10 all time if we're talking about stictly passing. He's a better player than either though. That isn't even for debate.
Curry is the closest thing to Magic Johnson we have today. Different players. But both as iconic and legendary. The point guard community waiting 20+ years for another trascended PG and they finally got it.

Not bashing Curry, he is the greatest shooter ever, and go nuts on the floor more often than not, but Magic for me is still the gold standard for passing and playmaker, he could do what scoring guards almost always can, impact more than the stat sheet and help teams win

Magic is GOAT post scorer below 6'9. Only Barkley could compete with him in that aspect.
"Less talented era" argument is always used when you don't have good arguments. I don't see any reason why Magic wouldn't be as effective today in the post as he was.
Wait what? You think Magic's scrawny butt could be as effective today where you can assault post players and not get called for a foul? And you think Magic is a better post guy than MJ?
Scrawny butt?
Yes, I think that Magic is better post player than Jordan. I don't think it's even close to be honest, he led ridiculous offenses strictly with his post offense in last years of his career.

Re: Curry V Magic
curry is a scam
ID rather have magic , oscar, kidd, nash, payton Stockton, I THomas ( the real I thomas) to play point for my team.
Probably there are other pgs id take over curry.
BTw magic lead a **** 90-91 roster to the finals, seriously it was an injured and old worhty, a bunch of old corpses like scott, thompson, drew, teagle, and a couple of green youngsters far from ready in divac and campbell.

By the way, very few people ever thought of this but Magic and Curry on the same team would be clear GOAT offensive duo. It wouldn't be even close - GOAT on-ball player and GOAT off-ball offensive player.

Having Thomas, Kidd or Payton over Curry is laughable at this point.
Good point with 1991 Lakers though, this team had no business in reaching the finals.

I tried to warn them of the silliness of their takes, how their forum is an echo chamber, and the dubious and spurious way they were conducting one of their projects, but instead of taking my warnings seriously they chose to muzzle. If that's how they handle dissenting opinion then the integrity of the discussion over their is ashes. I wonder how many of those in the "Curry has been totally exposed" thread drew confidence from the conclusions of that ostentatiously erudite forum but learned to their dismay the conclusions drawn there were built upon flimsy matchsticks.

In what world is 29-30 old? 31 year old Magic was the oldest guy on the team getting serious playoff minutes. That team's roster were almost all in their optimal age ranges for the playoffs minus Vlade and Campbell who were the young guns.
And vlade was pretty solid even that year. Perkins is underrated as heck here as well. A very good sold starter at that point.

Curry impacts more than the stat sheet as much as anyone today with the gravity he commands and the spacing he provides for his teammates. He's arguably the greatest impact stat crusher of the past decade - #1 in 5 year luck-adjusted RAPM, and that doesn't even include either of his two MVP seasons, where he was the unquestioned #1.

Curry himself can be a wet noodle. But his play! His play demands to be appreciated for the iconoclastic performance it is.

Re: Curry V Magic
Would you take Curry over a 6-8 James or Luka all the time? I think that's the discussion here. Having an elite point forward allows you to play very differently now to the benefit of everyone else. And today, that's what Magic would play.

That's like saying watch him play and solemnly internalize his greatness.
No! I will exclaim in shock, babble uncontrollably at how awesome what he did was, and heap upon it rapturous praise.
That's half the fun.
