Darius Garland vs. Collin Sexton
i'm in the camp that the Cavs should not make the same mistake that Portland made with CJ/Dame and try to get a better complementary piece in the backcourt...and I think DG and Sexton fall in that category for me...if I was Mr. Altman my plan would be to trade Sexton before his rook deal is up and move forward with a Garland/Okoro backcourt, considering i'm a Garland dude myself.
so...what do you think the Cavs should do here?

I'm not sure either of them has the value right now to be traded for anything useful in return (except maybe picks).
Although I agree having two six-foot guards as your best players limits your ceiling as a team, I think it may be too early to make this move.
What makes Garland more valuable than Sexton in your eyes?

more of a pure point, better at running offense and half-court sets when you need him to, Sexton profiles more as an off-bench scorer type to me than a starting 2 guard or even combo guy.

This question kind of implies that both these guys will be max or near-max level players in their prime, which would limit the Cavs financially. I'm not sure we have enough of a sample size to know whether these two will really be good enough to earn big contracts. If they end up costing in the ~$18 million range then it may be worth it to just keep them both (seems unlikely, they're both really talented players).

Garland is more versatile and is just flat out a more natural player. He is very good at seeing the floor and is able to actually initiate the offense while giving you 18-25pts per night.
Sexton is good but he's more of a one trick pony in my eyes. He's a pure scorer that you don't want initiating the offense because it leads to a lot of tunnel vision and ISO ball while others stand around.
They can both be good players, but in order for the actual team to he successful long-term, Sexton needs to accept a super 6th man role like Jordan Clarkson.

Re: Darius Garland vs. Collin Sexton
Both are talented, with their respective qualities and flaws.
What's pretty clear is that the Cavaliers need to make a decision and choose who's gonna be their point guard of the future. This dual-PG line-up isn't sustainable.
I think Garland is much better suited for that role, even though he's awful defensively. Better feel for the game offensively, higher upside as a pick-and-roll player, better 3-point shooter and overall just a more naturally talented player. Garland has a higher ceiling, and even if both pan out, Garland gives your team a higher ceiling imo.
I love Sexton's grittiness, but I'm not a fan of his decision-making. Randle just did a complete 180 in terms of basketball IQ, so who knows how Sexton is gonna evolve.

Re: Darius Garland vs. Collin Sexton
Keep both unless you get some kind of no brainer deal for one of them. Garland can't really get to the line. Sexton is the more natural scorer. Garland a better shooter this year but likely gets a lot better open catch and shoots. Sexton the better career 3 pt shooter as well.
Garland is a little better passer but not sure he is a total starting caliber guy...efficiency (TS%) quite a bit below league average, so him taking more shots is not necessarily a good thing.

If Sexton was to be traded this offseason then I'd put money on Garland being MIP next season. I think it's the right decision to trade Sexton now as he looks great.

Re: Darius Garland vs. Collin Sexton
I'd roll with Garland moving forward. I prefer Garlands upside as a lead guard over Sextons high volume scoring prowess. Sexton is having a good season though, so I'd try to see what type of value he has this off season and pull the trigger if the right deal comes to place

Sexton seems like the ideal Thibs guard tbh. Gritty and a scorer.

agreed...Sexton value is relatively high now + his contract extension is coming up and they have to make a decision anyways.

Yeah I'd love to have Sexton. I'm biased cause I wanted to draft him the yr we got Knox. But in terms of his fit (and I can't fully tell if it's more because of Peytons inability but..) Randle is sortve our biggest facilitator. We could benefit from that not being the case but Sexton sortve mutually benefits from that being the case. You guys know what he can do for better or worse so I won't drag out the explanation but I'm just saying I think he'd give the Knicks an element Peyton could never give and the system would suit him..

Where's the trade both option? Feel like we should have it for completeness' sake.

Personally, I'm not sure how much higher Sexton's ceiling is than what it's at right now. As for Garland, he took a huge leap from last season, and it seems like there's more to come. Plus there's the fact that Garland is a playmaker and Sexton is not, and it's much harder to find a playmaker than a scorer

Agreed. I like Sexton but a volume scoring guard isn't terribly difficult to replace comparably speaking.
Garland drips potential and is just now learning where and when to assert himself. I've said it 1 million times but there are so many times where he looks like Kyrie-lite from his ball handling, flashiness and finishing moves. Being a 40%+ three point shooter helps too.
Right now he is taking a backseat to Sexton in terms of the 'go-to scorer' and is playing the role of facilitator.
If Sexton were to be moved for a young wing player and this becomes Garlands show to run, I see a few All Star appearances in the next 3-5 years for him.
