CBS SportsBogdan Bogdanovic in his element again, giving Hawks exactly what they paid for
Bogdanovic is on a hot streak, but his turnaround is about more than just sweet shooting
Bogdan Bogdanovic is on a rampage. Bogdanovic scored a season-high 32 points in a 105-101 win over Charlotte on Sunday, the latest in a series of stellar performances. In his last eight games, Bogdanovic has averaged 21.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 36.1 minutes, with 0.504/0.515/0.867 shooting splits.
The hot streak stands out in part because of what preceded it. Bogdanovic began the season coming off the bench, standing around and shooting poorly. Now he has a starting role and more offensive responsibility, and Atlanta is finally getting the full Bogdanovic experience.
Bogdanovic has a quick release and picture-perfect shooting form, but the reason the Hawks are paying him $72 million over four seasons -- and the reason the Milwaukee Bucks went after him -- is that he's much craftier than the average sniper. He can run off screens and he can run pick-and-rolls. He throws no-look passes with accuracy and scores from midrange with proficiency. Bogdanovic has run a fraction of the pick-and-rolls that Young has, the two of them have virtually identical efficiency numbers when their pick-and-rolls lead directly to shot attempts, per Synergy Sports: 1.077 points per possession for Young, 1.076 points per possession for Bogdanovic.
In a recent interview with The Athletic's Chris Kirschner, Bogdanovic commended coach Nate McMillan for getting the Hawks organized on offense. There is less freedom than there was under Lloyd Pierce, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Bogdanovic is more involved than he used to be when sharing the court with Young, and he's playing like a star when he's running the show himself.
The Hawks have scored 117 points per 100 possessions in this two-week stretch, and they've scored 121 per 100 with Bogdanovic on the court. During the 111 minutes in which he played without Young, they scored a 125.3 per 100 with a plus-20.5 net rating. This small, superb sample cannot be sustainable, but it suggests that their plan is beginning to come together. Bogdanovic is playing his game, and Atlanta is rolling.

yea that Sactowndog guy who posts here about Bogi really doesn't know anything about Bogi. He keeps saying that he can only score on catch and shoot which is BS. Bogi is easily our second best dribble creator. That's why I almost like the idea of him being in the second unit and running the offense.

Need to check but I don't think it said that, but more than the catch-&-shoot was his best offensive weapon.
Now, not sure what's exactly your POV on "being in the second unit", but mine is that I want him to be the PG of the second unit, but that doesn't mean coming from the bench, as he signed here with the agreement to be the starting SG, and no need to break confidence like that.
It's easy : Bogi starts, but goes to the bench before Trae, and you manage the rest to have mainly Trae at PG for his 32min (or less if possible) and Bogi at PG for 16min
PG : Trae 32 + Bogi 16 = 48
SG : Bogi 16 and 32 to the other players
That's what I want to see in playoffs, unless we get good lead and can let play someone like Goodwin.
I just hate this kind of rotation with all five guys from the starting five, then all five guys from the bench. Sometimes, it can be better as they can get better chemistry, but most of the time this season, having 5 bench guys on the court has been a nightmare.
Mix them so there are always at least two or three important players, and you can also get better matchups like that.

I'm on the same page with all of that. Love Bogi starting, but also want him to get some PG duties with the second unit.
I also like staggering the minutes so you always have a starter or two out there at all times. Worked well with my Bulls back in the 90s Scottie would come out first and then when MJ came out Scottie would go back in.

Exactly! And as Capela can be really impacting in certain matchups, I would like to see McMillan really taking care of his foul in the beginning of the game. There are some teams against which we need him to play more, and we need to avoid him getting some early fouls like in one of the western road trio game (don't remember which one).
If they playing aggressively from the start with their interior, adjust to send one of our bench guys if needed to don't let Capela get two or three fouls early by letting them targeting him, as the ref make easy calls for the most aggressive team most of the time.

Re: Bogdan Bogdanovic signs w/Hawks 4yrs, 72m (Kings Chose To Not Match)
Bleacher ReportThe Biggest X-Factor for Every Projected NBA Playoff Team
Atlanta Hawks: Bogdan Bogdanovic
Bogdan Bogdanovic got off to a slow start in Atlanta, first lagging behind expected production levels and then losing nearly two months to an avulsion fracture in his right knee.
With the rust knocked off from his return in early March, the 6'6" swingman is suddenly showing why the Hawks felt confident giving him $72 million as a restricted free agent last offseason. He reclaimed a starting spot in late March and apparently has no interest in letting it go. Over his past 13 outings, he's averaging 20.5 points, 4.2 assists and 4.0 threes with an elite 50.3/49.5/88.2 shooting slash.
"I've been a little more aggressive game by game and not trying to force anything," Bogdanovic told The Athletic's Chris Kirschner. "I've just been playing with the thinking that this is what my team needs out of me. That's it."
The Hawks have long been hunting for non-Trae Young scoring options and Bogdanovic could be the piece who both complements Atlanta's star and keeps the offense humming without him.

Re: Bogdan Bogdanovic signs w/Hawks 4yrs, 72m (Kings Chose To Not Match)
Clutch PointsTrae Young mocks Kings for letting Bogdan Bogdanovic sign with Hawks
[T]he Kings are probably regretting letting Bogdan Bogdanovic walk away for nothing. After all, he was a restricted free agent and they could have matched any offer sheet given to him.
The Hawks signed Bogdanovic to a four-year, $72 million offer sheet last November. While the Kings had two days to match the offer, they eventually decided not to do so. Of course, it didn’t help that they had a failed trade with the Milwaukee Bucks for the 28-year-old swingman–something that soured their relationship.
Now, Bogi is thriving with the Hawks after a rough start to the 2020-21 campaign. In their last eight games where Atlanta went 6-2, Bogdanovic averaged 21.4 points on 46.3 percent shooting from the field and 45.5 percent from deep. He’s also contributing in other areas, as he put up 4.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.3 steals in the same span.
With his brilliant play alongside Trae Young, John Collins and Clint Capela, the Hawks are well in playoff contention in the Eastern Conference. The squad is currently fifth with a 33-27 record, giving them some cushion from the play-in tournament.
Like Young, the Hawks are probably laughing right now after they got one of the biggest steals of the offseason.

Bogdan has raises his level of play to another level. Possibly a future all-star caliber talent if our system allows him.

His laser focus is on a different level than I’ve seen even superstar player have had in recent years. Giannis is a damn good scout that’s for sure. No wonder he wanted him so badly.

Really a cool thing to see a signed F.A. playing like that, thanks Schlenk for having done everything he could to make SAC not matching.
Now, it seriously create some questions, like : Bogi agrees to 72M/4yrs THIS season, and he's playing like a boss, so why any player in this team should deserve a lot more than him. I'm not saying "more" be really "a lot more".
For example, I still think Capela is more important, and deserves a higher salary than Bogi, but if players like Bogi can agree to this deal, I don't why John should get a Max contract, and other later.
Acutally, Schlenk can get a double-win with Bogi :
- he really got a good player
- his contract can be a base to discuss other players extensions
Now, I hope he can use it and find the rights arguments to convince everybody it's how you can build a contender and that it can be more fun to earn 20M and contend several years that getting 30M and have no chances at all to win a championship.
IMO, Bogi's contract is exactly on the same level than what SAS done with Parker and Ginobili : it's win for both players/team

Thanks. What I did say was Bogi’s percentages, at least historically, as a catch and shoot player are pretty significantly higher than as a pull up shooter. Typically when he has a lower shooting percentage night is typically more off the dribble threes than catch and shoot.

Not the whole game, and he finished with +5 at Plus/Minus, but he should have got more if hitting more than 2/13 at 3pts.
Need to check what was the lineup when he played bad, I still think that McMillan should play 16min with both Trae and Bogi and alternate them the rest of the time to get 16min each at PG. It was working great in the end of regular season

he was a selfish chucker last night. At least 6-7 horrible off balance hand in his face 3's with plenty of time on the shot clock.

I agree. It’s why I don’t like seeing Bogi take shoots off the dribble though a number of his misses in Game 2 were catch and shoot. In my experience when the ball is moving and being shared Bogi generally excels. When the team falls into playing iso Ball, Bogi will do that also but shoots at a much lower percentage from distance.
