Re: Bears 2019/20; George McCaskey is on the clock
Most of the media "experts" I heard before the draft were calling for the Bears to "let the draft come to them" and absolutely not trade up for a QB. Today those same experts are expressing their absolute approval of the Fields pick and expressing their amazement that the Bears were able to pull it off. Interestingly, almost none of them are praising Pace for getting this done. In order to preserve their precious "Pace is incompetent" narrative, some are leaning on the idea that Nagy was the mastermind behind the Fields pick.
I think the "Fields is Nagy's guy" line of thinking is probably accurate. In contrast to 2017, the Bears braintrust has a lot more QB expertise led by Nagy. Pace acknowledged as much when asked why this draft might be different from 2017.
Every draft pick is a decision. Every decision carries with it an element of risk. IMO, trading up for Fields was a great decision. If it had been for any other position, it would have been stupid and reckless. Not only is QB the most important position in team sports, in the NFL, if you have a stud QB on a rookie contract, it enables a team to spend on other positions that teams paying $30+mil/year for the QB position can't do.
I didn't think the Bears could pulls this off for the price they paid. Kudos to Pace and the rest of his team.

Yes.. Bears got Teven Jenkins. Outstanding value. Great move to get this guy. Much needed.

I would have used some of the picks to beef up the offensive line, to help protect the next new quarterback and give them the best chance to succeed.
But if drafting Fields, or trading up for another new higher pick quarterback was the front office plan all along I now understand why the Dalton move was made.
If they kept Mitch, and traded up to acquire his rookie successor, it would have not been a great environment to try and develop a new offensive leader, under another now team veteran who was still struggling to establish themselves.
I just fear they made this move a year or two early. Chicago has always struggled to put the newly acquired quarterback in a position to succeed. I think the offensive line should have been further developed first before another move like this was made.
the question is whether they still would have signed dalton if they knew they were going to trade up for a QB. they could have just as easily used foles as a stopgap and spent that extra $10 mil elsewhere
games started at QB (playoffs incl.) for chicago bears:
104 cutler
66 harbaugh
65 mcmahon
64 ed brown
w/ the new 17 game schedule, fields would only have to start every game for 6 seasons w/ at least 3 playoff games to surpass cutler
Yeah, there's just no way to know if a QB is going to slip or if you can find a way to trade up. They had to sign Dalton in case all of the QBs were taken in the top-10. I think we just got really lucky with Fields. It's basically a "hindsight is 20-20" move to question the Dalton signing knowing that we drafted Fields.

Love the pick. Crazy how Pace trades up all the time. Want to know how much that cost us.
We should be set on our oline now.

I’m thinking our 3rd. We have no 4th or 5th. But have 4 6ths

Pretty good move.. They gave up their 3rd, to swap 2nds with Carolina, but they picked up pick #151 which is early 5th for one of their 4 6th round picks they had.
The Bears traded up again, this time landing Oklahoma State offensive tackle Teven Jenkins at No. 39 overall in the second round. They gave up their third-round pick this year (No. 83 overall) to swap second-round picks with the Panthers. They also got pick No. 151 in exchange for their sixth-round pick at No. 204.

Well to be fair, a lot of those "experts" didn't think Fields would last that long. So initially a trade up would have been astronomical, but in the end was reasonable.
Lawrence Holmes pretty much called it to a T. He was saying pre-draft that he wanted the Bears to be conservative or even trade down, UNLESS fields were to drop to a point of being realistically gettable. And I think most agreed with that going in.

Crazy but I did mention earlier that Fields and Jenkins we're my dream scenario so I guess I can't complain. Now we just draft 2 WRs and 2 CBs with our late picks? Use the spray and pray approach? Haha.

Now that's what the team needed!
Lets find another prospect to stash on the line even its a backup.

With all the O lineman available in this draft, giving up a 3rd to move up for this guy seems like maybe something they didn't have to do. OTH, if they felt this guy was clearly superior to the other O lineman that were left, I guess it's worth it. Could have used that 3rd rounder to add a corner or a WR though.

I'm all for it. A improved line will help the earlier picked Quarterback succeed.

Most people had Jenkins as first round, and a lot had the Bears drafting him at 20. So giving up the third doesn’t seem so bad for this move.

Its really a moot question, since you can never know for sure if you'll be able to trade up or not. And they had to cover themselves in the event they were not able to. that being said, they still might have done it- this way Fields will not have the pressure of being looked upon to save the season when Foles struggled (as he inevitably would have). Dalton may just surprise some people, in which case they can really take their time with Fields.

In that case, sounds like they good good value for their 2nd and 3rd round picks. Overall, to grab a good QB prospect, PLUS a top notch O lineman with the first two day's picks is about as good as I could have hoped for.
