5'11 190 CB projected to be a slot corner

Positives

Two-year starter who also contributed on special teams during his college career. Nice-sized corner with an aggressive style who is best facing the action. Possesses excellent length, effectively fights with his hands and battles receivers at the line of scrimmage. Competes to break up throws and physically defeats receivers to strip the ball away. Works hard to get off blocks and make plays against the run. Instinctive and shows good awareness facing the action, quickly locating the pass in the air.

Negatives

A bit late out of his transition following receivers off the line. Average burst to the ball out of his plant. Struggles staying on the receiver’s hip out of breaks. Slow getting his head back around to locate the pass in the air.

Analysis

Jean-Charles is a tall, physical corner who struggles making plays with his back to the ball. His skill facing the action and productive special-teams play could help him snatch a roster spot as a ninth defensive back.

STRENGTHS: Balanced athlete to flip his hips and smoothly transition…not the most sudden player, but he doesn’t play stiff either…his route recognition allows him to see plays develop before they happen…floats and baits like a savvy vet…attacks the catch point with the “my ball” mentality you want to see…has the feisty personality needed for the NFL level…better tackler than expected with very few misses on his docket…good-enough grip strength to get his man on the ground even when his form isn’t perfect…voted a senior captain by his teammates…finished with 33 passes defended in his career.

WEAKNESSES: Doesn’t have ideal size or body mass…plays violent, but his average play strength will only take him so far vs. physical NFL receivers…will be late getting off blocks…gives up inside position too easily and would like to see better jam mechanics…has spacing issues in zone coverage…guilty of grabbing late if he finds himself caught a step behind (11 penalties over the last two seasons)…got his hands on a lot of footballs over his career, but picked off only two passes in college.

SUMMARY: A two-year starter at Appalachian State, Jean-Charles played both left and right cornerback on defensive coordinator Dale Jones’ scheme. After two years as a subpackage corner, he became a starter as a junior and logged 27 passes defended over 26 games the last two seasons, including an FBS-best 17 passes defended in 2020. Jean-Charles plays with confidence and route anticipation, which allows his instincts and preparation to kick in, leading him to plays. He will struggle to recover after a misstep and needs to eliminate the panic plays. Overall, Jean-Charles doesn’t have an elite size/speed/strength profile, but he is a “right place, right time” type of player and stays balanced in coverage to disrupt passing lanes.

GRADE: 5th Round

Can't complain about another CB.

Jean-Charles weighed in at 184 pounds and hit 19 reps in the 225-pound bench press. At the start of offseason training, Jean-Charles was in the single digits for bench press reps. He finished the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds and maxed out his vertical leap at 35 inches.

I think that it is a tall order to make our roster at CB if you aren't someone who is a baller on special teams. At six corners you are looking at Jaire, Stokes, King, Sullivan, Hollman, Jackson. He looks like a willing and aggressive tackler. I think that Hollman and Jackson could definitely be put in a place to put up or shut up. Corner depth and padding.

I think that you can hold up to 7 corners and feel comfortable with that. They could both make the roster. I think that Jackson showed a bit in limited snaps last season. If he is a gunner, he is keep-able. We were horrendous at gunner last season.

Played against low level competition, so it will take time for him to adjust. A great pick for 2022 though.

Just watched my first video of him and holy crap, this guy might not be a great athlete, but he is kind of the anti-ahmad carroll. Gets his head around and breaks up passes like a champ.

Looks small for sure, but can definitely see him being a slot specialist and a ST ace. Really impressed.

Yep, I must've seen the same vid. I watch App State players anyways, one of my kids went to school there (yes, I'm old :lol:

) You can tell he gets it. Drives on the ball, getting his hand in there. Looks like a pro corner.
