GAME DAY, BALA! GAME 63: SPURS VS. 76ERS, 2-5-2021, 7PM (CT)

Post#1 » by G R E Y » Sun May 2, 2021 6:24 pm

The first of a back-to-back and five games in seven days is the challenge we face now. Surely the lesson of playing hard for the full 48 minutes and at times beyond has now fully set in. We simply have to play to our stated standards, everyone all in.

WHERE: AT&T Center, San Antonio, TX

WHEN: Sunday, May 2, 2021, 7pm (CT)

Earn The Stripes Mode: Reset. Refocus. Re-ignite full team play for the whole game.

Edit: This was a Fiesta game.

Unless we make an abnormal amount of threes we are losing this game by 30+

Tre Jones is disappointing me. He is playing like he is afraid to do anything. Seize the moment kid.... They aren't even guarding you.

After that 1ST Q where it looked like it was going to get away from us early, we actually started to look half way to decent considering we're missing four starters, and inserting a couple of brand new ones in Tre and Drew, with Rudy getting his first start in a couple of years, I think.

Agree with gump about Tre needing to be more aggressive. It's the one quality that a lot of our guys are missing right now, whether it's because the moment is too big and they are spotlight struck or afraid of making mistakes or what.

But we settled in better as the 2ND Q progressed, and Keldon and Lonnie are looking promising. I like the aggressiveness of both.

I hope as a team we take better advantage of the shots we're at times passing up whether from teh dribble or from drives into a congested key without passing out to open teammates.

Dieng is giving us some great minutes.

I like that Patty sneak in double from behind to try to get steals. He's good as settling the team at PG, but man oh man is he ever snake bitten.

Devin is, too.

We are actually outrebounding them and have made more 3s. We brought it to within 3 before they made two 3s late in the 2ND Q, so like gump said, don't pass on the chances - let it fly! (Maybe except Patty - he needs some saging or hypnosis or something).

We are fouling too much, so we must get back on D faster, and we can't give up so much space on their P&Rs. They've had way too many easy shots because we've sagged or gone under screens.

Play hard, play smart, we have nothing to lose in being more aggressive and taking more of the shots we are creating.

Early 3 in the shot clock by Rudy. Has that EVER NOT gotten Pop's ire? Ever?!

That's at least twice now where Rudy's tunnel vision has hurt us. Late in the first half he drove into congestion in the lane when he had Lonnie wide open in the corner, and now he selfishly took a shot without anyone else touching it early in the clock, we were prepared for a set play not a long rebound after which we didn't run back in transition. 5-point swing.

We were just within 5 points (like within 3 points before) and they hit two 3s to bring it up to 11 now.

Tre is just flat out shaken by the moment right now.

That was terrific D by Tre! Moved his feet to stay in front of his man who lost the ball, and Keldon stole it and drove in for a dunk. Hockey assist to Tre. Some flashes of the pesky hustle we will see from him.

But we left a lot of points on the floor before that, and every time we tied it up we either TO'd it or missed bunnies. Every play counts. I'm very proud of our fight tonight. We have to keep pushing through. We HAVE to.

The early shell shock and perhaps stage fright of never-before starting players got to us early and perhaps held us back from ever getting ahead.

Remarkably, we were without FOUR starters, got down 17, were down around 10 for the first three quarters, and STILL got it to OT. But we made some dumbfounding mistakes - Rudy's late in OT after we got possession which left everyone from Pop on out to the last fan in the stadium incredulous and mystified.

I talked about our not boxing out two games ago. On a live play like that we didn't even look behind us. Tough way to lose, but after the previous game, I LOVED our fight in this one. We had a lot of reasons to lay down and given in but we kept pushing.

Some inexperience by Tre and Devin hurt us. For those calling for all young guys all the time, these are the steep growing pains we'd have to live with. I'd rather they come along without the pressure for it to be solely on their shoulders. We NEED vets and we've only got three for goodness sake.

Anyway, I though Lonnie was terrific, and he managed to finish beautifully at the rim after he blew by everyone time and again. His handles were confident and assertive as he found his spots with and without the ball. Great outside shooting once again. When he has that bounce to his step, he is very dangerous. You can see the game has slowed down for him and he's taking advantage of it. Frankly, when he isn't sharing the court with DeMar (and at times Rudy) he is flourishing. We will need all of what Lonnie has to unleash the rest of the way to be successful.

I thought Dieng was a revelation, too. Great touch, solid D given the weight disadvantage, and Drew held his own more as the game went on.

I don't understand Patty's scoring drought. It it really hurting us. If he averages just below his average we win the last two games, all things being equal. But you can pick a number of what-ifs- like the FT's we missed last game and this game which would have put us over the edge. We will also need Bala Patty to dig deep and find his shot for us to be successful down the stretch.

I think we start too tentatively when we have new guys, just waiting to take an opponent's first punch and see how much we have to take before we start imposing our game. Tougher to do with four new starters, but we did, for example, miss several chances throughout the game to push the ball in transition even with Pop on the sidelines motioning for us to push it. We allowed a good D team to set up time and again rather than trying to impose our game.

Those are the two main impressions - we have to believe we can play with any team when we lock in, and despite the result, hopefully it instills some confidence to start strong. Whereas we started strong last game and wilted, we started too tentative and had sequences where we didn't push hard enough, gave up some shots to pass it to a team mate for them to step up, only to fight hard to stay in the game. Confidence from the start, and fundamentals from start to finish.

You can't teach height, but you can remember and use fundamentals. Despite the mistakes, there is a lot of good to take from this game. I'd be more disappointed if we just mailed this game in, but that we kept fighting and finding ways to stay in it is a positive. I hope we come out fighting like the hungriest dog for the last piece of meat tomorrow.
