It's not really saying HOF guys > non HOF guys - it's saying you dont actually know how good Terry Porter is. Like, the media has to tell you who is good or prolific/hal would have no idea who is and who isn't.
Like DJ can't anchor a championship team or really any type of legit playoff team. So at the very least there is nothing suggesting he's out of Terry Porter's team. DJ was part of a championship team...Terry Porter was on a finals team and often out played the best player on his own team (Drexler). Terry Porter is pretty easily better than DJ and Tiny in my view.
Hes not in the HOF because he was underrated during his time, that's it.
Hmm, not sure I buy that. If he was only underrated in his time (so you're implying that he's no longer underrated today) then why is it that when people talk about the best players of all time who aren't in the hall of fame, Porter's name pretty much never even comes up? For PGs the most common names you hear about are Kevin Johnson and Tim Hardaway. The other name you used to hear about often was Mo Cheeks, but then he just recently got voted in. Hell, often times people will even bring up Fat Lever, Penny Hardaway and Mark Price in terms of other PGs who have the best case for the hall of fame but didn't make it in. Again, you pretty much never hear Porter mentioned, even today.
This list only has Porter ranked no. 72 among the best players not in the hall:

https://hoopshabit.com/2016/04/05/50-greatest-nbaaba-players-not-hall-fame/7/One thing I think hurts Porter's case is he had a 7 year stretch where he was a full time starter. But he played for 17 seasons so for 7 out of 17 seasons he was a bench player. So I think many people (especially younger fans who started watching the game during the 2nd half of his career when he was a bench player) see him as more of a role player / bench player, since that's what he was for most of his career. Combine that with only 2 all star games, no real memorable/iconic playoff moments, 0 rings and it's easy for him to be overlooked.
Out of 1,274 career reg season games, Porter only started 732 of them. That's 57%. I'm not positive but I'm going to guess that 57% number is significantly lower than every other player on the list....except maybe McHale but Mchale averaged 31 mins a game for his career, compared to only 27 mins a game for Porter. And for the most part, when McHale came off the bench he was THE guy, and when Porter came off the bench he was merely A guy..
