I can't prove it, but I think a big part of Jansen's poor performance this year has been his pitch recognition. To my eye, he's swinging at (and making soft contact on) a lot of borderline strikes. He's been decently patient, but it seems everything he puts in play is fringy strike zone material... contributing to his weak contact.

Tellez was definitely having this exact problem when he started the season 0-25, getting himself out on pitcher’s pitches. But I honestly haven’t noticed this being as much a issue with Jansen, he just seems to miss everything.

I think I agree, although Tellez' bat also just seemed really slow early on. imo

The evolution of Teoscar and Randal this year has been extremely impressive.

Grichuk yes, he looks like a completely different hitter but Hernandez is having the worst offensive season of his 5 year career up to this point. I personally think he’s swinging at more pitches out of the strike zone then previous seasons. I wish he could evolve into a 55-60 BB guy but it’s not looking likely.

Yep, Teo has struggled, which is why his AB yesterday was so encouraging. He laid some decent offspeed stuff he normally goes for out of the strike zone.

Due to COVID he only has 60 PA so far - so still plenty of time for him to come around. He's looked a lot better the last couple games.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."
