Re: OT: Bears Talk - Justin Fields era begins
Fields got dinged for holding onto reads too long, but the other side of the equation is that his offense was closer to a "pro style" than the other top prospects like Lawrence and Wilson. tOSU runs a lot of option routes. Basically the receiver reads the defense and he can change his route depending on how they're playing, which requires the QB to be on the same page. So yeah he maybe held on to reads too long, but the flip side was they were doing more advanced things in terms of reading the field.
Here's some pretty interesting write ups. Not perfect(Confirmation bias hello!), and you can nitpick everyone apart, but still interesting. I recommend reading in order

The interesting stuff is in the stats. Also the film and how Dabo is really a genius at scheming those guys open.
Overall team's do stupid stuff all the time, can't be winners if there aren't losers in the draft. The Panthers, Broncos, and Eagles all got new GM's and hired new coaches so they probably don't feel the pressure of needing a QB just quite yet. Pace went 3 years without getting a guy, picked a bust over two would-be top 5 QBs, and it looks like he might've reset his clock for another 2-3 years with the Fields pick. As long as those guys get some kind of positive results every now and again they can probably afford to take their time. Say they want to build a team the right way and they were picking who was perceived to be the BPA, and they'll get a pass in the immediate time. That's straight out of Pace's survival as a GM playbook. Pace/Nagy on the other hand aren't in the same spot, and need to start showing some results.

I've always thought Lawrence a tad over-rated. I've seen him struggle in big games to be a difference maker. He looks great when he's throwing to wide open receivers and racking up huge yardage and TD totals, but when he's in a tight game and has to make plays, he struggles a bit.

Here's the list of guys I could find who started week 1:
Successful QBs:
Peyton Manning
Carson Wentz
Matthew Stafford
DeShaun Watson
Kyler Murray
Cam Newton
Dak Prescott
Matt Ryan
Russell Wilson
Andrew Luck
Maybe in the middle:
Andy Dalton
Derek Carr
Ryan Tannehill
Unsuccessful QBs starting week 1:
Robert Griffin 3
Marcus Mariotta
Sam Braford
Jameis Winston
*Sam Darnold - maybe still has a chance still
Mark Sanchez
Brandon Weeden
EJ Manual
Geno Smith
It's hard for me to look at those results and say starting week 1 hurts you. That seems about the normal success rate of a QB, if not better. I don't think starting week 1 will make a bad QB become a good QB just like I don't think waiting on a guy will make a bad QB turn into a good QB. I think starting week 1 will accelerate how fast someone becomes a good QB by getting the lumps out of the way earlier.
again, i'm not saying in general that starting from the get-go is a bad thing. it certainly is if they guy isn't at some baseline level of preparation, though. depends on the player and the situation. but there's absolutely zero evidence that sitting a guy for a while will markedly hamper his development. hell, steve young was a backup for quite a few years

A good coaching staff should be easily able to clean up any processing issues that Fields has under pressure..

for the record, chris simms was high on lamar jackson, josh allen and mahomes. he apparently took a lot of heat behind the scenes from NFL insiders for his support of lamar:

I don't think it hampers their development of where they will peak. It just slows it. Steve Young is a great example. Would Steve Young been a great QB for 1 additional playing year if he just started one year earlier? Almost certainly. Same with Aaron Rodgers.
If you know your first round pick is the QB of the future and he's not sitting behind someone considerably better in the present then sitting him for an additional period of time does not help you.

RG3 played at a Pro Bowl Level his entire Rookie year. It’s the injuries that derailed his career. Having him hold a clipboard to start his career would have just prolonged the inevitable. Didn’t Marcus Marriota have some success as a rookie as well? Not RG3 level success but I think he got off to a good start in his career.

Yeah. From his footwork it looked like it was his 4th read. That seems pretty quick to me toJcool0 wrote:fleet wrote:(Taking out the name, Im not sure.) But a draft evaluation from an ex player that does that stuff mentioned on the Score that his own evaluation was that he wanted Fields to progress through his reads quicker. How much there is to this we shall see. I’m having a hard time believing his fall with NFL teams was related to race. This has to be the what it was. Whether or not it’s actually true.

Nobody cares about what Orlovsky says, but Simms is legit. He has a pretty damn good track record for a pundit.

and he's not just a pundit. he grew up around the nfl, played QB in the nfl, and watches loads of game tape. and he's obviously more willing than most to trust his eyes rather than fall in line with the consensus
it should be noted that PFF watches every play of every prospect's college career and they noticed the same stuff simms does. they note that the negatives can be improved upon, though. which is obviously true

Oh well , for all our opinions on when he should start. Whether its week one, three, or eight.
The bottom line is he is the future. He to me looks like the best prospect for a modern day offense this team has picked up in my entire lifetime. He fills a lot of the check marks. I like his attitude, and he has a nice combination of height, strength, accuracy, and speed to add another dimension to this team and hopefully become a franchise quarterback.
I wish for him to have success. I have hope he will be the guy that breaks this teams historic bad records with quarterbacks. The Bears are now do to have a good one, I hope Fields is the guy who breaks the trend.

I do want to buy a Fields jersey. I want to toss my Urlacher jersey after all his ignorant racial tweets.
Won’t be buying Fields until I see him produce though.

Schedule Release day!
We're getting some prime time games I bet now with the interest in Fields.
They will probably put us on after the first month or so, once Dalton gets benched.
Then flex us if he's good and we're contending.
Networks love Bears on prime time.
Lamar and Kyler, Burrow and Trey Lance will be coming to Soldier Field, those will be high profile games.
There will be preseason too, so we will see Fields in action before the season begins.
-As part of the many changes approved by NFL owners ahead of the 2021 NFL season, this new year will feature three preseason games per club.

Not a bad schedule?
So many teams in my head are in the middle of the pack in that schedule, hard to know how tough it is until a quarter of the season is over. Heck, the tallest task looks like the Bucs, which the Bears beat last year.
Will the 49ers be good? I have no idea. Rams? No clue. Baltimore? Probably, but I like the Bears defense matching up against them.
I don't like them playing the Rams week 1. McVay gets a lot of prep time.

Hate to keep harping on this, but why are so many people calling Newsome slow when he ran a 4.38 40? It is making me crazy why they are ignoring it or uninformed.

Because our QB barely ran slower than him?
Who's saying this btw? We'll see how fast he is in a few months.

What I read an hour ago that just set me off (again)
Dazz Newsome's Route Running
There is no question about the North Carolina receiver's speed. That's because he's not fast. He ran a 4.59-second 40-yard dash. However, he plays the game at a faster speed and the scouting reports say he runs excellent pass patterns. If he's unable to get open at a camp like this weekend's then he could have problems adapting to the tougher competition at this level. Also, some questions have arisen over whether he actually got open in college so much because the Tar Heels offense had so many weapons defenses couldn't devote much attention to him. This wouldn't be the case with the Bears
