Pistons have until June 30th 2021 to cut Corey Joseph before his contract becomes fully guaranteed.

This is a good point. It's a bummer the deadline is when it is. His contract is a lot less appealing as trade bait given that we won't be able to trade him until after it expires and his 12.4 million dollars becomes guaranteed.

He's played better though. But we don't really want to pay 12.4 million dollars for a 30 year old guard right?

People will hate on me as usual, but I like Saben Lee more than I like Killian Hayes. He is much better in every advanced stats and as a rookie he has positive VORP value.

He is flawed, but he is already a good player. Hayes has potential but has a long way to go, Lee is already a quality backup and unless he regress (which is very unlikely) he has a place and a role in the league as a backup PG. If he can develop a passable jumper, he can develop into a starter imo.

I have absolutely no idea why we didn't guaranteed his contract and gave him a full time contract. I don't think we will lose him this offseason (since he is a 2way player he will be a restrict FA), but if we do I will be furious.

Let's say he was eligible for the draft again this year, after people have seen how he has done with us, he'd for sure be a late first rounder. Losing him for nothing is losing a pick in the 20-25 range in the draft. He's proven he is good enough to be decent in this league.

That said, if another team came at him at like 3 years $18 million I could see us not wanting to match that. Our best case scenario is that he decides he wants to stay with our young core and he takes a 3 year $9 or $10 million total type deal from us. Even if he isn't a net positive backup PG quite yet he certainly should be soon. That deal also gives us full bird rights and puts him on for a contract the same year Bey, Hayes, and Stewart would be eligible so a 3 year deal really is ideal for us for a lot of reasons.

I would have no issue going 3 years/$18 million on Lee. I don’t think he gets that much though.

I’m of the mindset that we should’ve created a roster spot to get him signed to a multiyear. Same with Frank honestly.

I don’t think anyone will throw crazy money at either player. I think they are bigger priorities than Diallo or anyone on the open market for the pistons in their situation.

I expect one of Lee, Diallo or Frank Jackson to jump on an offer from another team where there is less young depth. Among our young players who want more minutes and maybe think they should be a starter, Diallo is my guess. He could fill Josh Jackson's role after next season but I don't think he's willing to wait.

Of those three, Frank is the keeper. Kid can score.

Josh can too, I suppose, but he’s likely the player he’ll always be — out of control.

I think our 2 bench guards should be Saben Lee and Frank Jackson. They're both good young players with potential and they're a good fit together.

I don't think there is a single team who would trade a first rounder for Lee. And I can't imagine anyone is offering him a substantial contract.

I understand the team signed Lee to a 2-way contract but doesn’t the team retain any rights based on him being their draft pick?

I would see weird the 2nd round picks would just become UFA’s after their rookie seasons.

There should also be some type of provision for teams signing players like Frank Jackson and giving them the opportunity to shine. I’d like to have the option to match any offer he receives.

Will he be a RFA this summer or is he still considered like a fresh pick we can offer a contract to and only after this contract he becomes RFA?

Don't know the rule on this one but that can explain why it hasn't been converted to a standard one.

Can’t teams start trading after their season is officially over? I also feel like we could agree to guarantee a other half mil on that contract and he could extend the deadline.

At this point it's pretty clear Saben Lee will be an asset going forward, so I doubt Weaver will give up an asset that has a good chance of increasing in value over the next couple years. He fits our style and timeline but even if that changes he should have good trade value. I expect he'll be signed to a two year contract with a third year option, unless there's a more competitive offer.

If he does get a better offer I hope we match it, within reason. I really like what he's shown this year and want to see how far he pushes himself going into next season.

It's pointless. He only counts for the guaranteed amount going in trades anyway, so it's basically impossible to trade him for anything. Presumably, we just don't pick up the option and then make a decision about whether to offer him a new, lower contract to be a vet mentor or just move on.
