Re: What direction should the team take next year?
First of all, with the play in games, getting to #10 in the East isn't a big stretch. So I think we should be going for the playoffs no matter what. And provides a winning attitude for the young players which should pay dividends in the future.
If we try to tank, I don't think we can do it as good as we did it this year, so if we get a 5-8 pick, I don't think that moves the needle for us so much.
And as for the Pistons future to make a "next step", that will be free agency in 2022. That will have much more of an impact than the draft of 2022 for us. So we might as well try to win.

Completely agree with this, but I know a lot of people would strongly disagree. 2022 free agency is huge. And as a free agent looking at signing with Detroit, being a playoff team could be a deciding factor.

No way they win the championship by 2023 - complete lunacy! What, is Saddiq Bey going to score 30 a game? Complete foolishness!

You love your straw men, don't you? No one said they would win a championship by 2023 nor suggested Saddiq would score 30 a game. You funny.

Seriously, anyone who thinks this way is insane. No way it can possibly happen. Simply some blithering idiots around here. Hayes HOF! Plus how can you possibly win a championship wearing Martin merchandise? Give me 90210 gear. A shirt with Jeannie Garth or TAT. Good lord.

Weaver made the comment about finding younger guys that can be more than they've shown thus far. Also, that its about the person he adds to the team not just the player. I think that's what he saw with Grant. I don't think we land anyone on the top 5 list of FA's but its about finding younger guys that have a higher ceiling than they've shown. It's really what happened early in Joe D's tenture as a GM here landing Ben Wallace and Billups as cheap FA's that turned into all-stars with us.

Yup its completely stacked. Obv were not going to land any of the major guys but we might be able to find some Grant types in there that slip through the cracks.
Obv the play here is get one more high draft pick next season and look to improve in the 2022 free agent class with hopefully having two high lotto pick star talents.

Re: What direction should the team take next year?
For me, the tank route is clear and it involves trading away Plumlee, cutting CoJo loose via trade or not picking up the guarantee for his contract, and going all in on the youth movement with just Jerami Grant as our sole verteran. This, combined with our 4 2021 draft picks filling out our roster and hopefully resigning Frank Jackson and Saban Lee. Don't spend any of our FA money unless its for a single year player to fill out a roster spot, perhaps with a team option or non guaranteed 2nd year. In this scenario you play the young guys a ton even if its hurting the team (guys with 3 or less years experience, which is almost everyone) and you continue to get Jerami Grant rest on back to backs.
If you're going to try to make the push to win more now, you likely keep Plumlee and CoJo, you try to hit the right MLE or slightly FA to add to the team, you continue to develop the young guys but perhaps you let the vets ride out the 4th quarter of games more often as you don't want rookie and 2nd year mistakes down the stretch costing you games.
Either of those scenarios are fine and possible. I'm sure Casey wants to win as many games as possible its hard to build for 2 to 3 years down the road and rack up the Ls now.

Gotta play to win next season and let the chips fall where they may. Focus on development and being competitive - learn to close out games. The Pistons are still a few seasons away from being playoff caliber.
Hopefully we get a Top 5 pick. Maybe a consolidation effort to get another 1st?
Keep Grant and Plumlee.
Trade or buy out CuJo - although he would be a good veteran leader, of which the Pistons have few.
Resign Jackson, Diallo, & Lee
Sign free agents sparingly, preferably young reclamation projects to fill out the roster.
Develop the kids and look to the FA class of 2022 + draft picks.

Not to mention the stark reality that if the majority (or hopefully all) of your young players improve year over year--which is what you want--IT IS LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO NOT GET MORE WINS. Your improving players can't even literally throw games to keep the losses at an NBA-worst level because if they're intentionally missing shots or slacking on D, they obviously can't possibly be at the same time be getting better at making shots or playing D.

Agreed. And players really don't throw games anyway - when they are on the court they are trying 100%, especially if you're not an established player. The coaches can tank by who they put in the game.

Re: What direction should the team take next year?
I’m ok with keeping Grant and Plumlee. Guess we have to keep Okafor, although dumping him would be ideal. Weaver better not keep CoJo, he’s just in the way of young guys getting minutes. Definitely resign Frank Jackson. Let DSJ and Ellington walk. Sirvydas has a 15th man contract.
I feel like all of that is pretty obvious, though. The real questions are about Josh Jackson, Hamidou Diallo, and how many draft picks we actually make. Keep both of those guys or no? Consolidate for fewer, better choices or no?
Shouldn’t be as nuts as last year, but I do expect Weaver to do some fiddling, despite what he said in the presser.

Looking at young guys with star potential that haven't shown everything yet, Jarren Jackson Jr (former Spartan) playing for the Grizzlies right now will be a RFA in 2022. I know we'd have to overpay a bit to get Memphis not to match but he's the type of guy that could really break out. He's already solid but still oozing with potential. Poor rebounder for a big but it Beef Stew is going to be elite at rebounding they might pair together nicely up front.

My dream 2022 free agency is Jarren Jackson Jr and Zack Lavine. If we don’t add any major contracts we could add them both to Hayes, Bey, Grant, Stewart, 2021 draft pick.
