East 1st Round - Game #1: Bullets @ 76ers 1 PM (TNT/NBCSW/1500 AM) [5/23/21]

Post#1 » by FAH1223 » Fri May 21, 2021 2:04 am

YOUR Washington Bullets just ADVANCED to the NBA playoffs. As an 8th seed once again. This is the first playoff appearance since 2018 when the Bullets were the 8th seed (dropping there from 4th) facing the Raptors where they lost in 6 games.

Needless to say if this series goes 6 games, that'd be a surprise. The 76ers are title contenders and may be the only squad that can stop the Nets from advancing to the NBA Finals. Embiid is an MVP candidate and the Bullets have no answer for him. Simmons always gives DC trouble. And the shooting of Curry, Green, and Harris in the starting lineup and guys like Milton and Korkmaz off the bench represent #SoWizards moves of having them get open with huge games.

Wizards in 7. They have more bodies to throw at Embiid than anyone in the league and I don't see them stopping Beal or Russ. We already know that Russ hates Embiid

Philly is way better, so I'm not predicting a win. But I do think we match up pretty well.

I'd cycle our 3 bigs in and out a lot, and just have them sprint down the court on every single possession. The goal is to wear Embiid out. I also like that Beal is very comfortable in the midrange. Embiid will protect the rim, but that won't bother Beal all that much because he can pull up from 12-15 feet with efficiency.

I don't think we will have very much success feeding our centers as they dive to the rim. Without that, we're going to have to find ways to get open looks from 3. Please Brooks, please try and actually run some plays for Bertans and Mathews to get some looks.

Bertans could be the key player for this series. Wizards badly need some shooters against such a good defensive team.

Let's break the series down.

#1 Westbrook and Beal - We need historic performances from Russ and Beal

#2 - Wizards need to be able to guard Embiid straight up. If we have to double team Embiid we will have no chance. Len, Gafford and Lopez need to be able to manage him. I.e. 25-35 points a game. If Embiid is getting 35+ it's a major problem.

#3 - Who does Ben Simmons guard. This will be a very interesting decision for Doc Rivers. Will Simmons guard Beal or will Simmons guard Westbrook. I think ideally for the Wizards, Simmons would guard Beal. Neither Curry or Green can slow down Westbrook. And Beal's game is diverse enough where tight man-to-man defense won't stop him. If Simmons is on Westbrook, I think that will basically nullify Westbrooks game. If you were to design a perfect defender to slowdown Westbrook it would be Simmons. But in this scenario, Beal needs to go off. We need to force the 76ers to play Thybulle, taking shooting off the court. With both Thybulle and Simmons on the court, we will have an extra help defender to slowdown Embiid.

#4 - Shake Milton and Tyrese Maxey. Early on in the year, we simply could not stay in front of these two guards. The 76ers lineup when Embiid is out, needs to be an advantage for us. If Milton and Maxey are able to break down the defense at will, I don't see us winning.

#5 Bertans - Bertans needs to make shots. Point Blank. If he is "on" 4 games this series, it just gives us so many ways to win.

#6 Defense - The first game against the 76ers we gave up 15 points in the 3rd quarter and 40 points in the 4th. Which Wizards defensive team will show up? If we are playing good defense, with effort and intensity it bodes very well for our chance to win.

#7 Curry - He can single-handedly beat us given the chance. You can't leave him at all. The 76ers will try to hide Curry, most likely he'll be guarding Neto. If Neto can win this individual matchup our chances to win go up significantly. At the very least Neto needs to be active.

#8 Lopez It's hard to understate how much Lopez's hookshoot has transformed the Wizards. It is not a rare occurrence to see teams double team Lopez due to his effectiveness in the post. If at any point Philly goes small, Lopez needs to be in the game to make them pay. In addition, Lopez needs to win his individual battle vs. Dwight Howard.

#9 Tobias Harris vs. Rui This speaks for itself. If Rui can win this individual matchup, we will have a great chance to win the game. And it's not that hard to see. Rui has come a long way this season.

All in all, this isn't a typical #1 vs. #8 matchup. The 76ers aren't the KD Warriors, the Magic Johnson Lakers or the LBJ Heat big 3. They are beatable. If the Wizards play well, we are good enough to beat the 76ers and it will likely take an all-time great performance by Embiid, or a shocking performance from a random 76er to beat us. Rivers has done a good job guiding them so far, but at the core of their team is a design flaw, Embiid and Simmons play styles clash. If we can apply pressure the 76ers might just break.

Ranks since April 7th:

Wizards:
Offense: 7th
Defense: 7th

Philly:
Offense: 14th
Defense: 2nd

Wiz play at the fastest pace in the league, Philly ranks bottom 5 in pace.

Two biggest factors:

1. Can wiz guard Embiid without helping with 3 C rotation?

2. Can Philly keep Thybulle and Simmons on the court together? Thybulle is the Beal stopper.

Let Embiid average 40.

Guard the shooters.

And on question 2, they won't be able to... they need to keep shooters on the floor at all times.

Make Embiid beat you. Keep double teams on him to a minimum, otherwise their shooters will carve Washington up. We just have to hope the size down low for the Wiz can slow him down just enough. On the other side of the ball if Beal is right health wise I believe he will get his efficient 30 in the series even with stopper Thybulle guarding him. Westbrook will be the key to the series, do we get more WTFs or OMGs from him? Either way his never say die attitude and crazy motor have made the Wizards a tough team to put down and I predict these games will be closer than the typical NBA analyst might think.

The odds the Wiz win this series are low but they aren't zero and are probably a little better than the average 1 vs 8 matchup. And on the bright side at least we aren't going up against the three headed monster of Durant, Harden, and Irving.

Have to confess, I had no clue about the Russ-Embiid beef. I thought Angry Russ against Durant and Harden would be a great show. I'm more excited now that I know we'll get Angry Russ for this series.

We also will need Thomas Bryant in peak hype man form for the whole series, like he was last night. His strutting and flexing in the third quarter was key.
Can't say I do. Who else gonna shoot?

It’s just difficult to see how a Scott Brooks coached team is going to generate enough offense against the best defense in the NBA.

Really gotta lean into the Westbrook-Gafford pick and roll and get a big series from Bertans for spacing reasons. Would really help if Brooks would play Garrison Mathews atleast a few minutes. We need the shooting badly.

Seems like a big X factor will be Rui once again. Tobias Harris is one of the best at his position. He’s probably the only other player on Philly’s roster that can really create his own offense consistently. We need Rui to be able to guard him.

Maxey has also really come on since ASB, so hopefully Neto&Ish are up for the challenge. Philly really has a bench that is made up of a bunch of guards.

Korkmaz and Milton have really given us trouble this year. Add that to the matchups to watch list:

1. Embiid vs 3 Cs
2. Beal vs Thybulle/Green
3. Westbrook vs Simmons
4. Neto/Ish vs Milton/Maxey/Korkmaz/Curry
5. Rui vs Tobias Harris

Which of those matchups do you feel good about??

If Thybulle covers Beal and Simmons covers Westbrook... are we done?

And they still have Danny Green to 3 and D off the bench.
