Re: OT: Bears Talk - Justin Fields era begins
With all the talk about the QB position, I feel like there's also a crazy situation going on at LT. It seems like Jenkins is the favorite to start the season at LT despite being a rookie who primarily played RT in college. I think a big part of our early season success will depend on how well Jenkins can adjust to the LT position in the NFL (assuming he gets the job).

Re: OT: Bears Talk - Justin Fields era begins
If Dalton starts, I'm pretty sure Fields will be finishing this next season.
I think it would take a extremely unlikely turn of events to see Dalton go on a run, and hold off the position form the new franchise rookie for a entire season.

Anyone hear this one...
Brady was doing wind sprints in the parking lot of the country club where he was playing the tv tourney with Manning, Tiger, and Phil.
Barkley says "Tom, what the hell are you doing?"
Brady says "I'm winning a super bowl."
I'm getting those vibes from Fields. Man, I hope he has that elite winning leadership trait.

Dalton gets hurt alot. I think Fields will be plaaying just due to Dalton getting dinged up.

If Dalton gets hurt, I think it depends on when. If it's still early in the season and Fields isn't ready yet, they'd need to go to Foles.

0% chance if Dalton gets hurts Foles goes in over Fields.

Just starting Fields seems easily the simplest solution here.

Re: OT: Bears Talk - Justin Fields era begins
Fields starting needs to be a fluid discussion. The plan right now is to start a rookie at left tackle, and no one has any idea of how he will perform. If he looks like junk in training camp, I certainly don't want Fields starting. And I don't even know the final solution on RT is right now. If these tackles get Dalton blown up and injured, I definitely don't want to just send Fields out.
One minor thing is usually every year, 1 or 2 teams loses its starting QB to injury. The Bears will have at least 1 vet available for trade they don't need, maybe even two. Not one to hope for injury, but the Bears may get lucky and get a mid to late pick for one of their vets.

If this was on the table and Dalton was starting and looked awesome, we should trade him for a pick and then start Fields immediately.

Totally agree. We would have a lot of nerds claiming that winning immediately next year under that Dalton awesomeness scenario is somehow important though.

Why would any team do this? Quarterback needs to learn a new playbook mid-season and would need to be in the hunt for a playoff spot. If your QB play is that bad, then you probably aren't a playoff contender. Dalton can just be signed in the off-season since he is a free agent. Everyone knows the Bears aren't giving Dalton the franchise or anything to keep him locked up.

The scenario mentioned is you are the Bucs or Chiefs or someone with superbowl asperations but a bad back up QB. Your QB goes down in week four and is expected to be healthy in week 13 (or something). You can trade a 4th or 5th rounder to get Dalton or Foles to help you ride out the 8 weeks until your starter whom can win a superbowl is back.
I don't know think it's likely at all, but if someone viewed one of those guys as a big step up on their backup, it's reasonable for them to make such a deal. I was just responding that if such a deal was on the table, we should jump at it regardless of how well our starter was doing.

A lot of systems are similar and older QBs can pick things up quickly.
If it costs a team a 5th rounder to stay in the playoff hunt and nab Dalton, it certainly would be something discussed by that front office.

Maybe, if one of the reasons Dalton was doing well was because everything else was clicking, and Fields looked ready, then I guess so.
But if the Bears go 4-0 and Dalton throws 16 TDs and 2 INTs, they obviously aren’t trading him. Unless someone is sending major draft capital back.

If that happened though I would need a DNA test to prove that was actually Andy Dalton and not someone wearing an Andy Dalton mask. I get the point but we all know that scenario is unlikely.

So this is where I disagree. If Andy Dalton did that, you'd still know Andy Dalton isn't that good, and you'd trade him and go with your future guy with an extra pick for next year.

If that scenario happens I will throw in a 6th rounder just to make sure they stay on the line. I do hope maybe we can trade Foles for a 6th or 7th sometime during pre-season though.

Not that I'd mind if we had an extra 6th or 7th rounder, but those picks work out infrequently enough that there isn't much difference between them and UDFAs making the picks relatively meaningless. ~5th round is where draft picks stop having any real tangible value.
At least, that's what I read some time ago, and for some reason it stuck and I believe it

For me it's mostly about creating a little bit of cap room (I think it does that at least). Then your lottery ticket is in the 6th or 7th, but I wouldn't be picky about that

Not sure what you mean? You think a 6th or 7th is better than a 5th due to salary? Or you think a 6th or 7th is better than a UDFA because of salary? I don't think either of those things are true. I'd imagine there is likely no gap (all of them are at the league minimum) or the gap is extremely small (all irrelevantly close to the league minimum).
