Manoah gets the start for Buffalo tonight.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Re: 2021 Minor League/Prospects Discussion Thread
Orelvis' numbers in low-A aren't terribly sexy, but they check a lot of the boxes for a kid with his lack of professional experience in full-season. His K rate is reasonable, though perhaps a shade higher than you might prefer at 21.2%. His walk rate is quite good at 11.5%. He has a couple dingers, as well (and apparently should have had another, but the umps blew a fair/foul call).
Those are promising, because the .250 BABIP that is keeping his overall numbers down won't last: he hits the ball too hard for that, having already posted an exit velo of 110 mph and a bunch of loud contact that went for singles or outs.

So Stripling screwing the pooch tonight and Manoah absolutely dominating again means we're gonna see Manoah take his spot next time in the rotation am I right?

Stripling is our 4th starter, we still need to replace TBD first.

Nurse is below average at best.
Masai is overrated.
I dont get how so many people believe in the raptors, they have zero to chance to win it all.

I mean, we're talking about 13 total innings between spring/AAA. 13 innings where he hit six batsmen, heh.
Just to benchmark this: in 2019, Trevor Bauer led qualified starters with a 2.1% plunk rate. With his new pinpoint command, Manoah has hit 13% of the batters he has faced in preseason/AAA. Walk rate isn't the only thing one ought to look at when judging a pitcher's control.
There's a fine line between pitching inside and poor control. Manoah is the former. He's old school although he's going to get warned at MLB level probably. 18 innings, 1 run, 26 Ks in AAA. Maybe 2 more starts there and they will make a decision I think.

Jordan Groshans - "We're gonna win a lot of World Series in the near future"
Some of these guys will be trade casualties of course but if Pearson and Manoah can establish themselves quickly in majors, then maybe not.

What pitch did he throw that hit the batter 1:24 in? Was that his 2 seamer or maybe a change? Seems to tail away right into the batter.

Re: 2021 Minor League/Prospects Discussion Thread
A couple of relievers in the system I'm watching. Curtis Taylor was one of the players acquired from Tampa Bay for Eric Sogard. Taylor was the D-Backs fourth Round pick in 2016 out of UBC. His another big guy - 6.6", 230, with a lot of velocity. He was traded to T Bay by the D-Backs, made all-star in 2019 in the AA Southern League but was on the IL when he was acquired by the Jays at the deadline in 2019. He never pitched for Toronto that season. He's a one-inning guy at Buffalo now, and while I'd like him to improve his control and contact rate - his oppo .BA is too high - his K rate is almost two per inning. So let's see if he can refine his package over the coming months.
Justin Maese was the Jays 3rd round pick in 2015, and another case of a nice looking starter prospect whose career has kept being upended by injuries. Now with Vancouver, the highest level he's pitched at, his stats are very good across the board (still just a small sample), so I assume if he remains healthy and continues along this track, and given his age (24) and movement occurring within the system because of injuries in particular, he will be in line for a promotion to New Hampshire before too long to see if he can maintain his proficiency at yet a higher level.

Moreno continues to rake in AA. Martin also had three hits and a walk tonight.

Last year's 4th round pick RHP Nick Frasso made his pro debut two nights ago and the StatCast was popping in his 2 innings pitched. Frasso had some fringe 1st round hype at one point before he got injured and then kind of got lost in the shuffle. This one is worth tracking.

2 seamer. You can move it left or right depending on finger placement.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally. But it's not hard to read body language; stats don't yell you if a guy has the mental makeup for MLB. When you look at Pearson vs Manoah, two big projectable guys, you see one hell of a difference between their mental makeups. Manoah is so confident, he tries to suppress that with a little modesty/humility in interviews. Btu he has a fire in him. In between innings, he jokes with teammates. He'll face adversity, a bad game or two or three, and work out of it. Pearson, if things aren't going exactly as he looks like the proverbial deer in headlights. In between innings, he's pacing like a nervous father awaiting news of the birth of a first child. I hope Pearson can work through this, it might mean he needs a lot of AAA starts to thicken his skin. I'm not giving up on him as a #1 or #2 starter, not at all, but his development curve might be a bit longer tan Manoah's.
