Memphis Grizzlies vs. Utah Jazz in NBA playoffs

Image

The Memphis Grizzlies know most NBA observers didn't expect them to reach the playoffs. But being underdogs is a role they embrace.

They'll get that chance to prove they belong again Sunday (8:30 p.m., TNT/Bally Sports Southeast) when they open their first-round playoff series against the No. 1 seed Utah Jazz. The Grizzlies earned the No. 8 seed after beating San Antonio and Golden State in the NBA Play-in Tournament. Only three No. 8 seeds have upset a No. 1 since 2003 and none since 2012. Then again, Memphis was one of those teams — knocking off the Spurs in 2011.

The Grizzlies would like nothing more than to deliver another jolt.

The Utah Jazz finished the regular season with the NBA’s best record. What the Jazz want now is to show they are a legitimate title contender.

They host the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series Sunday. The Jazz are intent on erasing bitter memories of a first-round exit to Denver last season after blowing a 3-1 series lead.

Snyder

1:05 "We'll have to play really well, they're a formidable opponent"

1:30 "A lot of things with their personnel that present problems"

Something I touched on vs Knicks loss, Memphis play a deep rotation trying to develop, they have the added benefit of being better when Jenkins shortens his rotation to who's playing well where he was putting up with loose play to develop in the regular season

Question to Snyder what d you think about Jazz 3 regular season wins ?.

Snyder "a couple close games where we were fortunate, throw them out"

Did you get anything from those wins to formulate a game plan?

Snyder "They can play multiple ways, big with Jonas, Jaren or Jaren at the 5, they didn't have him regular season".

The beauty of the depth & versatility of Memphis front court is that it's impossible to game plan for, Jenkins can play multiple different ways during the course of a game, Snyder can only adjust accordingly, prep for all situations, which is harder to do. This is not even factoring X for a small ball look.

Nice intro Jam.

Ready for the war, against all odds. Too bad the Spartans got slaughtered in the end.

If none else think Memphis can win I have no doubt if they play like I know they can, they have more than a fighting chance. It's whether or not the young team believes it or not.

Poll above is what happens when you poll Memphis fans only. None picked anyone on the best team in the league, lol

That's a shame, unlike other fans that think chances improve. I want Jazz at their best, win or lose.

Hopefully he'll be ready for game 2.

I am most interested to see Gobert vs Jonas. I wonder how much we will push the tempo.

Jonas physicality gave Gobert problems when playing for Toronto. I know they have a different & better team now but this matchup I think will come down to how Jenkins chooses to use Jonas.

In Memphis matches earlier, with the team struggling to shoot/space the floor, he'd look to try & dump the ball into Jonas which is attacking the teeth of Jazz defense with Gobert's length facing him up.

Where Raptors guards Lowry & Derozan were aggressive in the paint with Jonas using his physicality on the boards.

I think it's a mistake trying to have Jonas go at Gobert, they need to attack the weak defensive link of the team & it's not Gobert.

The teams that have had the most success against Utah have typically gotten him into early foul trouble. Rudy plays a completely different game when the officials are calling ticky tack fouls against him early, and that's exactly what I expect as the league wants all these games to be as competitive as possible.

Yeah getting Rudy in foul trouble would open up the Ja drives which is one of the main components of our offense.

Wake up Jenkins, Snyder subbed out Gobert to get him off the Jonas match up. Bring him back against the bench.

He's trying to put Favors strength on him.

17 -3 run since Jonas subbed back in.

Memphis go into the half up 6 after a mistake put them down 13. Memphis bench need to be better.

Hoping 3J has a better 2nd half.
