Re: 120 Guarantees: the Nic Batum thread
Where will we enjoy Bumtum's inevitable downturn if this thread is closed?

Higgins was the ultimate, sign the president’s son when we could have gotten prime Lin.

Re: 120 Guarantees: the Nic Batum thread
Honestly, I can't even be mad at him. There is something poetic about a second l’aise Frenchy losing his focus on a losing Horncats team and then suddenly finding his old self for a contender.
I don't believe the 40% from deep. And he probably will have some nagging injury at the absolutely worst moment. But other than that I don't see why he wouldn't be able to keep this up. Both him and Diaw are made for the role of the fifth most important player who actually kind of has the skillset of an All-Star.

Well, the "Batum is playing well" concept is not a fluke. We're nine games in, and he's had nine good games. He just stole the starting position from Marcus Morris, after Morris returned from injury.
I really think Batum just needed a change of scenery, and some better players around him so he carries less burden. He's playing like a new man out there. I know people think it's just because it's his contract year, and maybe that's the case. After all, Clippers are only paying him the veteran's minimum at $2.5M. But he's holding down his best Player Efficiency Rating since 2011-2012 at a 16.4, after his career worst of 9.2 last year with you guys. His True Shooting Percentage is at 69%, which is his career best by a wide margin (after his career worst of 46% last year). He's getting many open looks because of doubles on Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, and his passing and court vision is really good. And he legitimately looks like he's having fun out there.
His new Clippers fans are being called the Batum Battalion.
I don't know how long this can continue. He's got to come back down to earth at some point. But for a guy signed to the vet min and expected to be a third stringer and a calming veteran presence in the locker room, he's been a serious boon to the Clippers as a starter who has bailed us out from Morris' injury to help the Clippers stay above water to begin the season.
His decline in Charlotte was wildly overexagerated. Truth is he never lived up to our unrealistic expectations. He has been a 10-15 pt per game scorer his whole career and we oversigned him to a big contract with the hope he could be more. He seemed to wilt under the pressure of those expectations, but even then if you go back and look at his 2018-2019 season the stats are pretty similar to what he is doing now. His shooting numbers are a little better and that might be the product of a small sample size or playing with more talented guys that are getting him open looks. I wouldn't put to much stock in last year because he didn't play that many games and the situation here had run it's course so the way we treated him probably didn't help his confidence.
Good for him though. I am glad he has found a situation where he fits. His real value is probably 12-15 million range in todays market.

52 games in, Batum has a 42.5% three-point percentage and a 63% true-shooting percentage.

Four playoff games in, he's blocking shots and reading the floor for steals as if he's played small ball center his whole life. Where did this come from!?

I was just coming here to say the same thing. Batum is the Clippers X-factor. He's become our Draymond Green:

Re: 120 Guarantees: the Nic Batum thread
Professional should never be in his bio or epitaph. Batum sucked us dry and gave nothing in return. NOW he has a little motivation and plays to his talent level. That’s selfish. He will forever be the twin billing of regret we share with Doris Meow, another frenchie who gave nothing close to their best while in Charlotte.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Batum is a prime example of why I roll my eyes when people talk about "player empowerment"
They paid this dude 120 million for him to phone it the **** in.

Re: 120 Guarantees: the Nic Batum thread
He was always going to be good value for 2.5 million, he does everything pretty well and has size to guard people. He was a terrible #1/#2 and probably #3 option which is what we paid him to be.

Ironically we could have used him after Hayward went down

I'm still a little sad they didn't just let him play out the contract even though Gordon is much better player.

Re: 120 Guarantees: the Nic Batum thread
we could've used 2018-19 or 2020-21 Batum, who is probably a $5-7M player. The version of Batum we got in 2019-20 who very obviously didn't give a ****, would've been useless to us this year. Would legitimately prefer Cody Martin hustling around trying and failing to make things happen than see Batum suit up for us again.
That said, stretching Batum for Hayward is still a big mistake in my eyes.

Re: 120 Guarantees: the Nic Batum thread
My ideal scenario would have been keeping Batum and giving him 72 DNP - Coaches Decisions in retaliation to him opting into his players option this season.
