OT: Music, What are you listening to today, and what are your favorites?
The season is over. Post a few of your favorite songs, I'm looking for some new stuff.
I'm a older guy, and my favorite artist ever is Johnny Hartman.
Here is a example:
;list=PL7NVfNOZUoAGL4zH0xuIcDv_aktELabnp
The way I first found Johnny Hartman, Is I walked into a record store over 20 years ago. There was a older gentleman who I could tell loved his job and was interacting with customers.
I walked up to the guy, and asked him what his favorite top three albums were of all time. He recommended three, and I bought all them. At the time I was not a huge Jazz fan, but after this albums purchase. "Johnny Hartman, I Just Stopped By To Say Hello"
This album has never left my play list since the day it was purchased. Let me know if you might like it, or think its terrible. I promise no offense will be taken if you do not like it.
I sometimes see the younger generation liking Frank Sinatra, but if you like that, vintage jazz singers like Johnny Hartman and Sara Vaughn are also worth a listen.
My favorite music genres, are stuff like this, and also 70's era rock. I have a large collection of both, but enjoy all eras of music up to the present day. I remain partial to acoustic instruments, and can not get used to the autotune present in much of todays vocals. I like to hear the grit / flaws, and emotion that autotune seems to rob out of a performance.
But to each there own. Please let me know what you are all currently enjoying.

Nice thread. Sarah Vaughan is great so I'll listen to Hartman later today.
I'd say I listen to like 2/3 reggae and the rest is a mixture of classic blues based rock, classical music, folk, rap, salsa and afro cuban.
Some of my very favorite tracks these days from around the spectrum:

For newer music/bands (last 10 years), I suggest anyone--new or young--check out Hiatus Kaiyote. I can't get enough of them.

Re: OT: Music, What are you listening to today, and what are your favorites?
I have pretty eclectic music tastes. I typically listen to 60s/70s rock and folk, Motown, 60s/70s soul and funk, blues rock, 90s rap/hip hop, many eras of folk/Americana up to the present, modern blue grass and “good” country music (Willie, Waylon, Sturgill Simpson, basically things not on the radio which is all pop-country packaged trash).
My favorite more recent album and new band is Black Pumas. If you like Al Green, Marvin Gaye, etc. you might really love these guys. This is the most well known song off their debut album but the whole thing is fantastic:
Some other current bands/artists I listen to that fly a little under the radar are Trampled by Turtles (blue grass), Michael Kiwanuka (hard to define but somewhat similar to Black Pumas I guess but less retro), and JD McPherson (how is he not a star? Retro rockabilly/blues and even some sock hop sounding 50s era stuff - he’s amazing).
I’ll try to come back and add more links later.

My favorite female singer.
I don't do much country, but this guy is killing it.

Childers is on the extremely short list of modern country artists that isn’t absolute garbage. He’s outstanding. Colter Wall is an interesting one to check out as well.
Not real recent because they broke up and separately formed Wilco and Sun Volt years ago, but if you have not listened to Uncle Tupelo you should check them out. Basically the founders of modern alt-country (a/k/a real country music that isn’t absolute garbage).

Re: OT: Music, What are you listening to today, and what are your favorites?
Nice offseason thread, 2018C3. Not as into music as I used to be...I think it's a combo of pandemic, work, little kids (noise!), living near an airport that hosts the F-35....I cherish pure silence nowadays.
My favorite for over a decade now has been The Avett Brothers...they span a few genres, and it looks like they're self-described as folk rock. I first heard them on a local independent radio station, and roughly within that year I saw a friend share the video below (recommend Tiny Desk in general). I got to see them in concert in a small venue in Montreal, and absolutely hooked since. Like a lot of artists, they're even better live when you add in drums, crashing cymbals, and them stomping the hell out of the stage. When I discovered them, they had just started working with Rick Rubin, and though I still like most of their stuff - I prefer their material before Rubin's influence a lot more that wasn't overly produced.
Too many songs I like to pick a favorite, but here's one quick example I found that I hadn't watched til today.
Alela Diane was a guest artist playing the Avett's digital NYE event this year, and enjoy here song here. A very chill sound, but kind of voice that can give you goose bumps at times.
https://www.patreon.com/posts/howling-wind-45699707
I also like The Head and The Heart a lot
You may like Alabama Shakes (Brittany Howard) - big fan of this one -
I like Foo Fighters, but can't says as I'm a huge fan, however love "The Pretender" as a higher energy song to blast
I grew up in the 80s/90s, so of course love just about all 90s hip hop. Favorite fun jam from then....
Definitely went through the classic rock era (especially Zeppelin)...went through a house/trance phase where I would go to live shows (e.g. - Sasha & Digweed, Deep Dish) when I was younger. I can even enjoy mainstream poppy stuff in the right context ...knowing it's just cotton candy to rot your teeth. e.g. - getting way overly hammered, out on the dance floor on vacation in Key West w/a bunch of your best friends, and some T.Swift song you'd never heard drops, and that fun memory stays w/you forever. Don't know what version, but I assume it was some kinda remix like this.
I like lots of things, and can appreciate most anything. I can't take a steady diet of yelling/screaming/pissed off music...but it should go w/o saying - when it comes to music - to each their own. In general I can't stand music snobs. They're the worst. No...your knowledge of some off the radar artist doesn't mean you're better. It just means you choose to spend your time more with music. You don't really see the same kind of attitude when it comes to taste with say...a sports fan. "WHAT?!? How can you not know Kevin Durant?!?"

Definitely enjoy all that stuff. My kids are pretty young, so have gone through long periods hitting up Motown hits on Pandora in the car, and 60s oldies as well. Not a big country fan, but I saw you mention Sturgill in another post...that guy's def. The Truth from what I've heard.

Rachael's voice is awesome. I keep missing them for a live show, inc. just recently as I underestimated the appetite of pandemic-suppressed humans...sold out before I could buy.

I definitely do not look down on anyone who doesn’t know certain bands. I agree music snobs are incredibly annoying. That said, I think I have a music snob trait.
One of the reasons I listen to older music and current music that is a little outside the mainstream is because about 90% of what is on “standard” pop and country music stations today (and for about 20 years really) is overproduced, manipulated, mass consumption, mindless dreck. And I don’t mind saying it. Because it bothers me that genuine artistry, individual talent and creativity gets suppressed as a result.
You could say the same about movies, but it’s somewhat offset by the exact opposite thing happening with cable and streaming television options which have been an entertainment godsend.
But these are criticism of the industries themselves and not really the audience. With music especially.

So cool! Waylon is my all time favorite for country music. Great lyrics, singular voice. What a singer.
Love me some Taj Majal.
I went to see Bela Fleck and Leftover Salmon one time in college but ingested something that made me uncomfortable in crowds, so I left my group and walked all the way home by myself.

I know Bela too. He's been a guest of LoS many times as has Sam Bush and the McCoury's. Taj was at the Nashville Session show at the Ryman in 2019. Most of the artists that were on the record came and performed. It was a special event. I was tour manager for LoS for a festival season, once upon a time. I'm still in recovery. lol.

I guess we're all a product of our time, so being a 90s kid, Oasis is my favorite band. Their CDs were such a constant feature in my Discman that I ended up buying 3 or more of each of their first three records (Definitely Maybe, What's the Story Morning Glory and Be Here Now) because they of all the scratches on them.
Even now the isn't a single year that they're not my top artist on Spotify.

Constantly underwhelmed by the Bulls.

Check out Lianna La Havas also if you enjoyed Hiatus Kaiyote. My wife (then when we were just starting to date) introduced me to Lianna La Havas close to ten years ago. Turns out my roommate (with whom I was in a band at the time) was also quite into them and I had never realized it. She's another really talented songwriter, guitarist, and singer.
Then there's obviously Esperanza Spaulding, who is an exceptional jazz bassist and singer.
