Could Dennis Schroder be an option at PG?

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Fri Jun 4, 2021 1:05 am

Schroder played for OKC and has a history with Weaver and Jerami Grant, and he's the same age as Grant. He's someone that previously would have been thought to be out of budget at MLE type money, but he has had a disappointing season and especially now playoffs with the Lakers. He turned down a bigger money contract extension with them earlier as well.

Let's say we get lucky and end up with Cade or Mobley at #1 or #2, is Schroder someone you'd have interest in at PG if he was willing to come here on a 3 year full MLE deal?

Hard pass. I'd rather give whatever back up minutes and keep CoJo instead.

We really need to give and see what we have with Hayes and a big if we get Cade

No.

The rationale against signing FAs to compete for minutes with developing players has been discussed ad nauseum in countless threads/posts already.

When he was 24 or 25 Atlanta swapped him for the right to waive Carmelo ($25 million) and a 1st round pick. Some team is going to overpay him, so unless you want to relive the Ben Gordon signing or are jealous of Boston for landing Kemba walker... no thanks.

A good early prime point guard doesn’t get traded for Danny Green and a very late 1st or the trade I already mentioned. So the fact that he got dealt for BOTH. Crazy crazy red flags.

Look at what a young Billups was traded for. Then we got him on an MLE deal. Sometimes its about finding the right player that can still do a lot more than they've shown.

We signed Billups at 26 and he had never put up numbers as good as Schroder has in past seasons... of course that also doesn't mean much its possible we've seen the best we will ever see out of him. But there certainly is someone out there that is going to sign for MLE money or less this summer that will end up being breaking out and being an all-star on that contract its just a matter of who that player is going to be and who signs them.

Billups was a bust before Minnesota, proved he belonged in the NBA there, and took off with Detroit.

Dennis was never a bust. Dennis put up good numbers and was dealt for Carmelo and the 1st.

I would love to see Detroit discover the next Billups. There are way too many red flags attached to Dennis.

The fact that Dennis has put up the numbers he has and he’s still being handed off is one of the bigger concerns.

Billups and Schroder are so dissimilar in terms of their skill sets, career trajectory, and character that Chauncey's name really shouldn't be invoked here at all.

Please remove Billups from this conversation. Thank you.

I like Schroeder. As a 6th man scoring guard. Which is what he is & how OKC played him last year. He's not a point guard. Not interested in RJ 2.0.

Schroeder is just a slightly better version of Reggie Jackson.

Not comparing Schroder to Billups, other than you can't judge a player based on who he is traded for.

And I agree, Schroder is likely best suited for a Lou Williams type scoring off the bench role on a good team. I'm not sure Schroder is the guy, but he's at least someone who has some connections to Weaver and Grant and has fallen off a bit from where he likely would have been in FA so he's possible. Someone like Montrez Harrell also seems very much in play in FA as he also hasn't worked out well in LA. I'm not sure either of those guys are a good fit for the culture we're building but its certainly something Weaver needs to consider, just how he wants to use that MLE this season, or if he wants to save space for next year and look for a player or two on just one year deals.

Schroder is a known douchebag. Pass.

Our new culture, same as our old winning culture (hard work, no nonsense), is a real thing to us. You don’t mess with it for an average player like Dennis.

Schroder is literally Reggie Jackson 2.0

Peaked in OKC, always thinks he deserves more shine and playing time than he actually does, average at best

Rather go after Lonzo
