That part I agree with - his agent will know. But I also think the Mavs know exactly who J. Rich is. All they have to do is to communicate that they will be looking to upgrade his position and it's unlikely he will see more playing time.

If he stays, he will likely get traded - possibly to a bottom feeder. So I don't think this is in any way certain that he stays.

I agree with that. The Mavs will and should be looking to upgrade his position. That’s why I like the idea of sending him to Boston for Marcus Smart. You can only do that if he opts in.

Marcus Smart is basically Wes Matthews 2.0. Wes is actually a much better shooter though. If Wes frustrated Mavericks fans, Smart will be even more frustrating.

Dallas will need a mobile defensive center in the offseason. If they are able to address that then it solves a lot of things.

Wonder if Nerlens Noel and Carlisle have buried the hatchet.

Yeah, I can see how that could work. Given the non assets Dallas has, an outright signing would help.

Another candidate that may come cheap is Kelly Olynyk. Quick on his feet, has a 3 point shot, plays physical or dirty at times. Basically every facet of the job that Porzingis dislikes doing, he can do.

I also believe Cuban is still keeping that max slot open in case Kawhi would like to leave LA. And if Kawhi would like to stick it to the Spurs, he can always come next door to Dallas.

Doncic needs teammates for win, RoLo and Olynik aren't contender materials.

If Dallas can improve the roster elsewhere, Kelly would be an ideal 4th starter / 4th option. He is basically a better KP at this point.

I would try and do a S&T for Lowry. Something along the lines of Lowry (S&T, 3/66M, 23M 21/22) for KP, just straight up.

TOR gets an asset for a guy who is walking, and has a better age fit.
DAL gets a win-now, playoff proven veteran who does all the small things to win while saving 8.65M.

Immediately resign THJ to 3/55M, 21/22 18M
Release WCS, Richardson Opts-Out

This leaves Dallas with:
Kyle Lowry 23M
Tim Hardaway Jr 18M
Dwight Powell 11M
Luka Doncic 10.17M
Maxi Kleber 8.75M
Dorian Finney-Smith 4M
Trey Burke 3.33M
Josh Green 2.95M
Jalen Brunson 1.8M
Tyrell Terry 1.52M
3 Roster Charges ~ 1.8M
TOTAL 86.32
CAP 112M
CAP SPACE 25.68M

Sign Lauri Markkanen 3/45M
Sign Bryn Forbes to a portion of MLE / BAE
Trade Trey Burke + Cap Space for Steven Adams + 2 SRP

G - Kyle Lowry / Jalen Brunson / Tyrell Terry
G - Tim Hardaway Jr / Bryn Forbes / Josh Green
F - Luka Doncic / Dorian Finney-Smith / Josh Green
F - Lauri Markkanen / Dorian Finney-Smith / Dwight Powell
C - Steven Adams / Maxi Kleber / Boban Marjanovic

Its not perfect, but I think its better. You get the veteran 2nd option in Lowry who helps build up Brunson's game over time (I think Jalen has an outside chance of developing into a Kyle caliber player), you gamble on the up-and-down 24 year old Lauri to be the guy who develops over time into the long term #2 for Luka but get him at a price that wont sink the team if he doesnt. You make a move for Adams who brings crushing screens and is a ideal culture fit, splitting time w/ Maxi at C. Forbes is a designated shooter for those Luka kickouts and finally get back THJ as his shooting, while up and down, is needed and more than anything his desire to win fits what you want to build around Doncic.

With all of the time KP missed and his inconsistent play this season, I don't think we know the answer to this question. But, I am wondering what happens when Luka does have a legit #2 on this team.

Let's say DSJ had gone to the Knicks had was having a Julius Randle-like impact on that squad this season. I think we'd all be made we gave up DSJ for KP. Obviously, DSJ had serious attitude/ego problems and that hindered his development. Pretty much stunted his development. But, I don't think you can put 100% of that on DSJ.

There's definitely an ego to Luka too. It's not an accident that his usage rate is so high. What I'm saying is, are we going to see Luka being willing to surrender some of his usage rate to a 2nd star?

So far I haven't seen it. Two seasons ago when Luka went down with that twisted ankle, and KP went up to Milwaukee and won that game on the road. When Luka came back, I didn't see him getting KP involved to the level he should.

If the Mavs had Bradley Beal on this team next season, would Beal be happy with his usage rate?

Ive always been against the KP/Hayward swap due to Gordon's age and the fact that he himself isnt available all that much, but if we could get the 11th pick in that swap, I'd jump on it. Not sure if we'd have to add Green to make it more fair?

Then I'd go after Jarrett Allen, I'm assuming Cavs match, but he's exactly the type of big what would be great here.

Jarrett should be perfect, but no chance we can sign him.

This post should really be broken down... as there is an important element to what is being said. Let's frame the question this way: Is a number 2 player on the Mavs a big name player? The amount of ball-usage almost prevents big name players from being included as a "sidekick" to Luka. I think Giannis was the exception as his skill set is complimentary, but that no longer is in play.

This is why upgrading our starters and rotation players may not require a "big name." We definitely need another playmaker, but outside of that, we are mostly looking for very specific skills - defensive specialists, catch-and-shoot players, and rim protectors to name a few.

I would argue that you need one really good playmaker... and then you need to upgrade your interior defense, your rotation, and add one or two catch-and-shoot players. They don't have to be studs. For instance, probably no one here wants Danny Green anymore, but a Danny Green as a rotation player with complimentary players make for a different stew. A Kevin Olynyk - dismissed in a post above - has a skill set that probably is attractive to Dallas with the right players around him.

In a nutshell, I don't think I know all the appropriate players that would fit with Luka, but I do think he needs very specific players around him to succeed - not just well-known names. Honestly, I'm not sure I can guess much beyond the important playmaker type, But I'm hoping the Mavs know. This may be the last year with financial flexibility.

I'd check with the Knicks a trade of Toppin + DAL '23 1st for Jalen + '23 2nd.
The '23 pick is heavily protected and isn't worth much, they may overpay for Jalen to get him on his small contract and use their cap this offseason before Randle's extension, this trade give the Mavs the ability to trade do Jrue-like trade, and Toppin will fit very well with Luka.
I'm very impressed by Batum and Reggie Jackson, they'd be great targets for vet. min/BAE.

Toppin should be starting for New York if they're smart. I thought he should have started in the playoffs after game one.

Ran across this on Twitter. Myles Turner for KP? I’d do it. I’m not too familiar with how all the salary cap part works but wouldn’t the Pacers have to add to the trade because of their salaries?

I like him a lot, but Thibs for some reason isn't playing him at all, even in the Mavs game (the 1st one), he got in and made few energy plays that energized the team, he still took him out and never saw court again.

Talking to Pacers fans on the trade board, who understand how their team operates, makes me think this is total BS.
