Why make allowances for these guys by hiring them and providing them a platform — by allowances, I mean in the form of overlooking their accents, their word use, their mental agility or lacktherof — when comparable flaws or weaknesses (missed rotations, not boxing out, missing open jumpers, turning the ball over) would get them bounced from the league? In awarding them, these networks undermine their work and philosophy.

In the case of Gooden, you rarely even get the kind of observations and insights that supposedly a former player is there to deliver. The other night against the Spurs, in the final minutes, he said it would come down to who wants it more.

Hire on-air people who have the gift, regardless of whether they played. Actually, on second thought — don’t hire anyone who played. Give the broadcasts a little critical distance. Do away with the jockocracy. Anyone with half a passion for the sport can learn the game. It would be SO much more interesting to listen to. SO much more surprising.

Personally I like having a knowledgeable and well connected former player on a broadcast team. They deliver insights to the culture, locker room, coaching thoughts etc. Some part of the game does have to do with the celebrity of the players. If you have a well respected player in your broadcast booth you can get comment from players who might be sticky to talk to. A guy like Brendan Heywood consistently delivers insights, humor, and analysis of the game. That is the part that is missing with a guy like Drew. And the broacast game in general. Gooden is only there for color commentary, he does not breakdown the sets, defenses, counters, etc. He is not Tony Romo'ing the action and predicting what will likely happen out of a time-out. I think broadcasts are better with former coaches like Jack Ramsay, Hubie Brown, Van Gundy who can teach a bit of the game while they are breaking down the action. I think every broadcast teach should have a guy like that providing notes and things to look for. There are players who can do so as well. I wish they had the freedom or encouragement to do so, instead of simply trying to entertain.

But really I think guys like the 'All the Smoke' crew would work well if they were free to work a little blue. Frankly for my taste I wish there was a late-night crew who had a little more latitude to work a little loose and free with the language. Who wouldn't want to sit in a suite with Gil and listen to his uncensored running commentary on the game? You'd be both laughing and learning the whole time. Yeah it might get a little blue, but he would be stirring up controversy and giving background details and the bar/barbershop commentary on the game, only with actual knowledge. Gilbert is sharp as a scalpel when it comes to his understanding of the game. He loves the game and watches it obsessively. If he veered off script a little, that would be fun. So long as it circled back to the action and outcome.

Great idea for a late-night basketball show for Gil. Maybe team him up with Brendan Haywood - someone he's comfortable with and who'd keep the conversation at a high level while still accentuating his sense of humor. How great would that be?

When HBO buys NBA broadcast rights. Saturday night basketball or something. A lesser watched property they can afford to play around with.

Some part of this sorta was done when Gilbert and Mia Khalifa hosted a sports talk show together. But I guess that didn't go very far. And it wasn't play by play.

I'd love to see Gilbert do color commentary. My favorite player in franchise history.

But other than Gilbert, players really add nothing. The post-game interviews are usually vapid and stupid. In-game commentary focuses on talk of effort and who wants it more and is full of cliches and butchered language. Ugh. No.

Tell you what: give me a theater critic or an art critic. There's bound to be one of those out there who also loves and maybe knows the game -- hmmm, I wonder who that describes, hmmm. Rather than the same tired horses*t year after year, we would get lively musings on ... who knows. But it would be interesting and thoughtful.

What a terrific idea!! Awesome, badinage!

Setting the politics aside which are terrible in its own right, he's absolutely awful. It's probably one of the worse NBA broadcasts out there. When the Wiz were on ESPN last week it was a breath of fresh air because we didn't have to listen to these two talk.

I have no idea if they will be replaced, probably not seeing as how Ted has gone through a season and a half with essentially no fans which means no $, it wouldn't shock me if they're replaced after next season.

Ted is losing money... Don't think he'd pay them to not work and pay their replacements

Contrast this send off for Jim Paschke by the Bucks with what the Wizards did to Steve Buckhantz...

The way Wall was treated at the end is probably number 1 on my list of why Terd Leonsis is terrible. The way Buck and Phil were dumped (for Kutcher!) ranks number two. His air of superiority, his aloofness and smugness and just generally easy to dislike demeanor are number 3. Seriously, who walks around constantly reminding people that, 'I'm smarter than you,' and, 'I told you so.' Especially when you are, very objectively speaking, failing far more often than succeeding.

Terd if you're reading this, you're terrible. And bring back Buck and Phil!

Watching pels hornets on nba tv.
I think the announcers are the hornet guys. They’re awful homers.

When I used to get League pass I found that was pretty common.

I find them annoying. I thought I was recording the game and I was
going to enjoy them choking a big halftime lead.

In any case, CHA lost a game they should probably have won.
Their magic number is 1. Feeling the pressure?

He probably gave Ben Simmons an extra bit of motivation. Kutcher the Butcher. He became such an unlikable play-by-play guy and really needs to stop with the Konnichiwa's when Rui dunks.

Steve Buckhantz thanked Mike Breen for sticking up for him when news broke that NBC Sports Washington wouldn’t renew his contract.

Mike Breen called the GM of NBCSW to tell him he was making a huge mistake back in Spring/Summer of 2019.

Breen said it wasn’t anything against Justin (called him a great young broadcaster  ) but said “you know what I mean, Steve and Phil.”

This was on Buck and Phil’s podcast with Breen this week.

Breen and Walt Clyde Frazier have a similar tenure with NY Knicks TV on MSG Network of over two decades.

Is anything the Wizards do based on metrics or polling?

Do they realize how many people don’t like Kutcher and Gooden? Because I have yet to see anyone say anything positive about them.

Or is it me? Am I just insulated in this bubble that follows this team too closely and most people couldn’t give a rat’s ass about who the Wizards’ broadcast team is?

Probably that one?

JK is just not likeable which is weird because it really shouldn't be that way. He has the chops for the job and is certainly capable but he's just incredibly awkward and annoying at times. You get the feeling he's trying way to hard to please and be the good homer but it doesn't work at all.

Phil Cheiner was never the deepest or most insightful guy but Drew Gooden makes him look like Hubie Brown in retrospect. Drew should be on the studio post-game show, not a color guy for an NBA broadcast. He's a nice guy but cast in the wrong role.

I've suggested Brendan Haywood as a color guy for while ever since I watched him do a Mystics game years back. Intelligent. Provides reasoned analysis. Insightful and thoughtful. Doesn't hold his tongue. IMO he'd be really good.

Haywood WOULD be good. I’ve often thought the same. Plus, he doesn’t butcher the language/misspeak — always a welcome (but unfortunately surprising) thing from former players. Butchering the language/misspeaking: it’s like starting a point guard who can’t dribble. No team would ever allow that — why do TV producers?

JK is trying to leave his mark, he's got the announcers voice if that makes sense. But the konichiwa when Rui dunks it...eh. It's not dagger, or back breaker, or "how do you like that?" from Buck. I miss Buck and Phil.

Gooden can kick rocks tho.
