As long as Luka is there, they're making the playoffs, barring injury to him.

And I hope he doesn't get hurt for the sake of the sport (and selfishly I want him to sign here as a UFA years from now).

Luka: When are you going to get me a real #2?
Mavs: What more do you want? We already got you Tingus Pingus and Bobi!
Luka: TRADE ME!

Precisely... The Mavs aren't keeping him. This isn't Dirk 2.0, dude is a showman, if any player has the balls to play here it's him.

That's why we have to do what we can to stack and keep the assets to trade for him or the space to sign for him in 2025-6.

Doncic is a pipe dream. Dallas is still a contender. They are not a small market team. They will try to improve this offseason.

No player ever refused a full Max before. Do you really believe Doncic will refuse a near 200/5 max contract to play for a contender big/medium market team?

And if we do get Doncic, the trade would deplete the team and we would be a far worse team than Dallas.

I'm not talking about the immediate future, I mean down the line, 4-5 years from now when he's coming off his second deal. That's how far the Knicks have to think in advance. They s*** the bed for nearly a decade, didn't have anyone here or any assets when LeBron was a FA in his prime (2010) and we saw how that worked out.

Dirk spent 13 years in Dallas before he won a title, and he was on the downside of his prime with his body already declining pretty dramatically. That type of "loyalty" was rare even back then and might not exist at all in the player empowerment era.

Dallas is stuck with Porzingis past Luka's rookie deal and the franchise has no record of attracting actual star talent it didn't draft.

Also, is Dallas a large American city? Yes. Is it a big media market? Absolutely not. Luka seems to have more of a "star" personality than Dirk who was really just a quiet Euro who wanted to perfect his craft and play in a comfort zone.

We'll see how it pans out, but the Knicks have to learn from the past if they have any interest in being in the conversation for these guys when they're finishing their 2nd deals and potential FAs.

Luka is going to be a Laker.

Zion is our only realistic franchise-altering FA target with RJ already on the team.

The key will be severely limiting 2 out of the Nets' 3 stars. If the Bucks can't accomplish that, they won't be able to play their game which is overwhelming teams with their length and pressure. At that point it will turn into a shoot out, and the Bucks have no chance in a shootout unless Giannis reinvents himself mid series and turns into an unstoppable first option on offense.

The Nets lost that game against Boston because Tatum went off for 50... He basically won the shootout. The Bucks don't have any offensive weapons that come close to Tatum.

It's all about the Bucks imposing their style of play on the traveling Nets circus--that's the key to the upset.

No but they have a boat load of offensive weapons the sum of which outstrip anything the Celts could muster.

Ummm it typically doesn't work like that in playoff basketball. The Bucks don't have a single go-to scorer. They don't even have a big shot Billups like the Pistons had in '04...

I think the series is going to be much more competitive than the Boston series because of the balanced two way attack, but I find it hard to believe the Bucks will be able to shut down 2 out of the Nets' 3 stars for four entire games.

Also, in late game situations, the Bucks have exactly ZERO go-to guys to close it out. The Nets have three (two of whom have rings).

The Bucks steamrolled the Heat, none of the games were even close. Let's see how they perform in a tight late game situation before we anoint them... Would love for them to embarrass the Nets, I just don't see it.

They have

Who is playing insane right now

and several of snipers like Forbes - who is lethal. The Bucks will have no problem scoring on the Net.

Nets will fold like a tent versus some real competition.

I agree. KD is a killer, but Brooklyn will lose.

Dame willingly wants Kidd as his HC? Yeah, he might not have the brightest front office mind.

Ricardo and Enky are both making good posts in this thread. (Quelle surprise.) I +1-ed Richard4444 out of the two because (1) Brassssiiiiiillllllllllll, Expresso2222, and (2) it appears that Luka does have the initial Euro-team-loyalty thing. Ofc, 5/6 years down the line who knows, but the Mavs will certainly wriggle as much they can to make something for him before then. cf. the Bucks.

Overall, the Knicks can't put all their eggs in the basket of a disenchanted 2026 Luka agitating to come to them. Hell, a disenchanted in season KD who seemed to want to come to them just flaked.

too bad Randle ruined our chance at a championship - with embiid and harden being hurt and Bron eliminated it was our time to grab glory - yet we couldn't get by Trae and Bogdan. lol
